Magic's Reluctant Bride (closed for maurader13

The loss of the comforting weight in his lap brought Lentharian back from his deep sleep. By the time he opened his eyes, Melisandra had finished stretching. She had found the pendant he had put on her during the night.

"Len, thank you but, I can't accept this. I mean I can, but why?"

"While you slept, I felt something that was making me uncomfortable. When I get it out, I found that small pendant. It's not for trade, and I have no idea of why it was there. But rather than just sell it, or do something else with it, I thought I would give it to you. A token of respect and friendship."

"Its very beautiful, Len. I am sure its very expensive though."

Lentharian laughed. "Yes, it could fetch a good amount of coin. But I don't have anyone in Kraala that would be interested in such a piece. Plus, I am going to Kraala to get emeralds that have not been set into any form of jewelry, so that one would not be of any use."

"I'll keep it, but as long as you promise me I'm not going to be hurting your trade by keeping it."

Her expression was stern, and he could feel the importance of her declaration.

"I promise you, Melisandra, that bestowing this gift on you will not hurt me in any manner. Anyway, the pendant suits you. It is elegant, without unnecessary embellishment to draw their eye away from the natural beauty contained within."

With a slight darkening of his cheeks, Lentharian stood up, and got them some breakfast. He returned with some trail bread and cheese. "Don't worry about these. Both have been made with travel in mind. They both keep well, and taste reasonably good. Just peel of the outer cover of the cheese. It tastes terrible." He tore the bread in two, handing half to Melisandra as well as breaking the cheese in half. The outer layer was a dark brown colour, while the inside of the cheese was almost gold.

Melisandra let the pendant drop back down as Len handed over her share of breakfast. Peeling the brown outer layer, she held the cheese up to her nose and inhaled. Her stomach growled in response to the sweet smell of cheese and she blushed slightly. "Thank you Len," the pair then tucked into their food with the gusto of people who wanted to get on their way as soon as possible. The food filled their stomachs and they split the last of the wine between the two of them before breaking camp and making their way into Frelu.

So far the day was starting off and continuing on better than the previous day. For now, the incident was forgotten, though Mel could see that Len's shoulder and arm still bothered him now and again. Beyond that the trip to the border was uneventful, thank the gods.

"Once we get to Kraala, I suppose we should find an inn to stay at and then get down to why we are headed there; trading and hopefully the start of a new life." Brushing her hair back Mel sighed softly., if she knew the Royal Guard was hot on their trail she would have been contemplating riding until she couldn't any more or booking passage on the first ship that could take her. "Thank you, I don't think I would have thought right away to head for Kraala. At least now I can possibly make some contacts or decide from there whether to stay or head elsewhere."

By mid afternoon they had cleared the cover of the forest and were now on the open road to the border. From here on out she wasn't Melisandra anymore. She was simply Mel potential horse breeder or swordswoman for hire. While she didn't doubt that she did have an excellent singing voice, being a bard did not really appeal to Melisandra's spirit. Not that she would turn the work down if it came down to it. One couldn't afford to be picky, when your options were limited.

Breakfast disappeared without too much talk, as both were hungry after the previous day's activities. They broke camp quickly as they were getting to know each other better, and worked together with little conversing or trying to do the same things.

Lentharian was feeling better physically, his shoulder was improving and the ride was not as hard as the day before. He was also happy that Melisandra accepted his gift without too much argument. When he could be himself, he would make the emerald match Melisandra's eyes.

"Once we get to Kraala, I suppose we should find an inn to stay at and then get down to why we are headed there; trading and hopefully the start of a new life. Thank you, I don't think I would have thought right away to head for Kraala. At least now I can possibly make some contacts or decide from there whether to stay or head elsewhere."

"Finding an inn would be a good idea. I will have a few days of work when we reach Kraala, just catching up with the various buyers and sellers that I am due to meet. During that time, you can be my bodyguard, which will help build your reputation, at least a little. You wont have people falling over themselves to hire you, but they wont laugh in your face either. Just something for you to think about.

"As for suggesting Kraala, I'm sure that you would have figured that out yourself."

They finally left the forest, reaching a stretch of low rolling plains. Their pace picked up a bit. The feel of the wind blowing as they rode helped cool them down and generally lift their spirits. By the end of the day, they would be safely in Frelu, and the danger to Melisandra being taken would drop considerably.

"Halt! Identify yourselves!"

Two hours before sunset the two riders were in the presence of a large body of horsemen. Lentharian breathed a little easier as he recognized the emblems of one of the Frelu nobility. He brought his steed to a halt, and raised his hands enough to show they were empty.

"I am Len, of Noden. Merchant heading for Kraala to conduct trade. This is Mel, of Brask, my guard. If I might ask, why is there such a large patrol here? Is there some bandit problems?"

"No, Len of Noden. Both of your Kingdoms are full of activity that is making our king nervous."

"Both kingdoms? When I left Noden, it was peaceful and no signs of troubles anywhere. And in our travels through Brask, there has been no signs of troubles there either."

"Since your travels have been so peaceful, you will find that there are no bandit problems to concern yourself with, Merchant."

"Thank you, my good Sir. Is there anywhere were we might find lodgings nearby?"

"None that you would reach before the sunsets."

"With your permission, good sir, I would like to get closer to Kraala while there is still daylight."

Receiving a curt nod from the officer, the two rode off, heading for the port city of Kraala.

"No I am sure they will be falling over themselves trying to insinuate I can't possible be a suitable bodyguard." She laughed softly, of course unless someone tries to make off with your goods, we'll never know."

It would be easy enough for them to find lodging, and the horse could use a brak from all the riding they had been put through.

Melisandra laughed softly once they were out of hearing range of the guards, "Well at least you know they are dedicated to their job. I suppose my impending marriage does have both kingdoms riled up, but it shouldn't be to the point of making other kingdoms worry. I wonder what he meant. As its unlikely word managed to get passed us that I've fled my home."

The pair continued riding until sunset. When they made camp, they were just a few hours from the Port of Kralaa. Len got the fire going while Melsandra set her bedroll up next to his. "You know it does make me wonder though, if my father even sent word to Noden about all of this. I mean the Prince was due to come within a day or so of when we crossed paths."

A small part of her did feel for her father having to explain away her absence, then again it would serve him right for having pushing this whole arrangement in the first place. Breaking out the last of her meat and bread she handed Len his share, "Well at least after tonight o more road food. A good hot meal, a hot bath and a soft bed. What more could a person ask for?"

"Your Highness, the use of birds to carry messages is a long practiced art. If rumour is true, all the Kings converse with each other from time to time on important matters. Maybe, your Father has passed on word to his brother Kings?"

The ride continued until sunset, by which time Lentharian's shoulder was starting to get sore from the jostling while spending time in the saddle. He was looking forward to arriving in Kraala, just to allow some time to rest his shoulder. Plus, he was looking forward to sleeping somewhere with a roof over his head for a change.

The quickly got their camp prepared, and when Lentharian finally got their fire going, he saw that Melisandra put her bedroll close to his, rather at some 'safe distance' as she had normally done. He thought about it, and he liked the idea that she was going to be closer than normal.

"You know it does make me wonder though, if my father even sent word to Noden about all of this. I mean the Prince was due to come within a day or so of when we crossed paths."

"Well, word would be passed back to Noden very quickly. Magic has been used for centuries to pass messages over long distances. If the King of Brask wanted word to go to the King of Noden, it would arrive very quickly I would imagine."

Lentharian started to boil some water, readying to make some tea for them to drink. Melisandra got some of her rations out, and handed some of it to Lentharian.

"Well at least after tonight no more road food. A good hot meal, a hot bath and a soft bed. What more could a person ask for?"

"Good company perhaps? I am grateful for the chance to travel with you this far, Mel. You have helped me learn a great deal about myself. For that, I will be in your debt. I hope I'll be able to repay that debt one day." He took a bite to eat. "Tomorrow will be a hectic day for us. Going from woods and fields to being in a city. It feels like it's been years since I was walking between buildings. It's going to feel good to be back in civilization again."

"I am sure he sent word to my mother's family, just in case I would go to Liden. " She pulled a sliver of meat off her portion and popped it into her mouth. "And yes good company is always appreciated."

She blushed as Len gave her thanks for helping him learn about himself, "Len I didn't really do anything. I just opened the door for you, you are the one who made the choice to go through it. If you don't know yourself, then you can't really know the people and the world around you."

They continued to eat and chat, pausing only for Len to bring their tea over and for Mel to make sure the horses were properly hobbled for the night to keep them from wandering off. Looking over her shoulder t him as he filled their cups, Melisandra chewed on her bottom lip. The fates just had to throw their paths together, to show them what they more than likely really wanted in a spouse, when they were both destined for people who were their total opposites. How fair was that.

She wasn't in love with Len, maybe a bit infatuated because he was one of the few men who she knew that could appreciate, Mel's view of the world and her place in it. given the chance, the princess would pick someone like him. Someone open to new things and experiences and challenges. Someone willing to look outside of the life they were born into, and to see things from another viewpoint.

Once they were seated again they shared their tea and watched the stars come out overhead. It was a nice and clear night, though there were clouds rolling in from the West.

"I appreciate your friendship Len and should anything come up while we are at Port, should my father's guard or even my fiance and his own show up," she shrugged lightly, "don't do anything to get yourself in trouble over me. I'll go home and deal with things if it comes to that, but you shouldn't get in trouble or even held for treason because you helped me." Melisandra sipped her tea slowly, she was giving him the chance to protect him should things go wrong, but at the same time in the back of her own mind Mel was planning an out for herself. One that could possibly put the two main kingdoms at odds again.

As the fire burned low, the pair finished their tea and dinner before bedding down for the night. Both fell asleep rather quickly, Len facing one way and she another, but in the night as everyone tends to, they shifted and moved during their sleep. The closeness of their bedrolls made it inevitable that they would end up making contact in their sleep. It was innocent enough at first, but at various points through the night, the pair were as close any two people could get without being naked. From her face being buried against his throat and one of her legs tossed over his to Len's arm belted over her waist.

When the sun started to breach the horizon the next morning, cloud and gray a sure sign of the coming rain, the fire was smoldering and Len was draped half over Melisandra like a blanket. His left leg was between hers, and his left hand splayed just under her breast. Had Mel be the first to wake, she would have been very aware of not only their compromising position, but the hard prod of Len's arousal against her body.

"I appreciate your friendship Len and should anything come up while we are at Port, should my father's guard or even my fiance and his own show up, don't do anything to get yourself in trouble over me. I'll go home and deal with things if it comes to that, but you shouldn't get in trouble or even held for treason because you helped me."

"Mel, I would not abandon you in a time of trouble. I will help you where I can. Isn't that what friends do for each other?"

Along with Melisandra, he bedded down quickly and quietly, falling asleep quickly due to the exhaustion brought about by his painful shoulder. but his sleep was probably the best sleep he ever had. His mind played out scenes of how he thought his life would be with Melisandra as his wife. Riding in the High Valley, seeking one of the spring waterfalls in the adjoining valleys and spending hours just sitting together watching it. Of them seated with the rest of his family during dinner, feeling the fierce pride as his wife stood up to them over something she had done that irritated them. But the one that got him was imagining their wedding night. The soft touch of her body against his, the warmth they made together, heavy breathing and other sounds of pleasure.

It was that dream that ended with his awakening. He felt a comforting warmth close to him, partially under him. As he woke up further, he became more aware of the exact nature of the comforting warmth. The soft flesh what moved with the cycle of breathing... He woke up completely at that thought. But he was fortunate enough not to move much if at all. He was partially lying on Melisandra, with one hand dangerously close to a rather personal part of her. Not to forget the erection that was firmly pressed against her as he lay on top of her.

He lifted his head slowly, looking down at Melisandra. There was no sign of discomfort from her. He wasn't sure, but he thought she might be enjoying the contact. Once the shock wore off, he was rather happy to be so close to her, but he feared that she would react badly. And violently. He decided that he would move his leg first. He slowly removed his leg from between hers, rolling his hip in the process, removing his lower torso from contacting her. Melisandra chose that time to move a little herself, rolling closer to him, trying to recapture the warmth, or the contact. But her movement allowed him to move himself into a better position to get clear of her. The other problem was that Melisandra's roll moved his hand until it was at the base of her breast. His face felt as though it was on fire when he became aware of the new positioning.

He carefully removed his hand, fearful that she would wake up before he got his hand clear. Biting his top lip, he eased himself out of his bedroll and sitting down on the other side of it. His heart was beating as if he had been in a fight, or a long run. He found himself confused about how he felt finding himself like that with her. As with all problems of that magnitude, he pushed it aside and concentrated on getting the fire going again, and preparing their breakfast.

Melisandra complained in her sleep as she rolled over at the lose of Len's warmth, but the sounds and smell of breakfast did eventually rouse her. Unaware of how they had slept through the night she stretched and groaned softly. "You know that was actually a better night of sleep since we started for Kralaa together."

Getting to her feet slowly she looked around taking in the sky above them and the thickening clouds, "Looks like its going to rain. If we are lucky we'll make it to an inn before it starts and before all the rooms fill up." Looking over at Len she took in the slight flush on his face, "Is everything ok Len?" Her mind did go back to what he had said yesterday about standing by her should things get thick. It was nice and generous of him, but she truly didn't wish to seem him get caught up on her trouble.

Walking over to her saddle bag, she pulled her cloak out and shook it out. As optimistic as she was about the weather she wasn't about to get caught off guard in a downpour. It would slow them down and would drive those who would have otherwise continued on their way from Kralaa to seek refuge in any Inn with open rooms. she laughed softly, "Oh the joys of traveling incognito. One can't throw their weight around as a noble to get the best room at the Inn, when you are trying to be anything but that." Of course Melisandra wouldn't have done something like that anyways, not unless it was absolutely necessary.

Lentharian heard Melisandra starting to waken. The fact that she was not complaining was a good sign as far as he was concerned. The memories of how he was when he woke up caused him to shudder momentarily, the desire to wake up like that again was strong.

"You know that was actually a better night of sleep since we started for Kralaa together."

It took every once of his self control to stop himself from turning to see if she was joking with him. He was certain that if she knew what happened when he woke up, her opinion would be quite different. He focused on breakfast even harder than before she woke up. He made absolutely certain nothing went wrong with their breakfast so he didn't have to think about what happened.

"Looks like its going to rain. If we are lucky we'll make it to an inn before it starts and before all the rooms fill up. Is everything ok Len?"

"Hmmm? Oh.. uh yes. Yes, everything's fine. Just... I just woke up with a start, that's all. Breakfast will be ready soon."

"Oh the joys of traveling incognito. One can't throw their weight around as a noble to get the best room at the Inn, when you are trying to be anything but that."

'Welcome to my world, Melisandra.'

"Well, we'll just have to trust in the Gods and their Wisdom." He served up their breakfast and quietly ate while he thought through what had been happening over the last day. Something had changed, and he had no idea what, or why he was reacting the way he was. In times such as these, he would consult with someone more knowledgeable about what was happening. But that was not possible.

"Well, since it looks like it will rain, we had best hurry."

Between the two of them, they broke camp quickly and were riding towards Kraala.

The Fates had other ideas in store, halfway to the port, the skies above them opened up. Thankfully both Len and Mel, had placed their cloaks on when they broke camp. It wasn't just a mild summer rain, no it was the mother of all storms and had they not just woken a few hours before hand, the pair might have thought it later in the day with how dark it was. They rode hard and fast, the road churned to thick mud. On the other hand the rain was really what they needed whether they knew it or not as it had the Royal guard making camp and holding off til the rain ceased.

By the time they reached Kralaa one thing became very clear, they were going to have a time finding an Inn with open rooms. The market was closed and there were several ships docked. It took four tries for them to finally find a place and after stabling their mounts, they headed inside, soaked to the bone.

"So much for making it here on time," Melisandra said, her teeth chattering slightly. The floor of the in was wet from travelers arriving prior to them. She pushed her hair back while Len turned to deal with the innkeeper. All she wanted right now was hot bath and didn't care what it took to get it as long as she did.

"I have one room left," the inn keeper said as he looked from Len to her, unsure if such an arrangement would be acceptable. By now she had removed her cloak, and her sword was hanging from her hips.

"That's fine. We've been on the road, the last few days. Anything is suitable at this point. Does the room at least have a bath?" Mel drew out her purse and poured out several coins, enough to cover several days worth of stay.

"Yes, m'lady," he nodded as they traded money for a room key. Kralaa like many Port cities had pipping set up to pump hot water to each room, saving on the time people had to wait for a hot bath.

"Thank you," Looking at Len she nodded and they headed upstairs. Once they were out of earshot of anyone, "Looks like we'll be rotating who gets the bed until another room opes up." She unlocked the door to their room. It was spacious enough, so that they wouldn't be on top of one another all the time. "So do you want the bath first?" Mel set her things in one corner of the room as she gestured towards the thick privacy screen that sectioned the bath from the rest of the room.

The clouds that had been threatening them all morning finally carried out with the threat. Except that it was worse than threatened. The rain was more a deluge. If they had not been so close, Len would have suggested finding somewhere to wait out the rain. But it was more sensible to keep going.

Kralla was also suffering under the deluge, and it had driven everyone indoors. As they rode through the main gate, Len could make out some masts of ships in the harbour. It didn't bode well for finding somewhere to stay the night.

Three unsuccessful trips into inns that were full and turning away other potential patrons were completed before they finally had success. But at least their mounts were out of the rain, and being tended to. That made Len feel a little better.

"So much for making it here on time." He heard Melisandra's teeth chattering as they approached the innkeeper. Mel held back a little while she let the merchant do his bit.

"I hear you've got rooms free?" Lentharian asked as he got to the bar.

"I have one room left." The innkeeper looked between the two travelers, his uncertainty clear on his face.

"That's fine. We've been on the road, the last few days. Anything is suitable at this point. Does the room at least have a bath?" Lentharian watched as Melisandra poured out several days payment. He watched the innkeeper closely, and he reluctantly returned the right amount of change.

Armed with a key to the room, the two headed upstairs. They arrived at the door, and Lentharian simply waited for Melisandra to open the door.

"Looks like we'll be rotating who gets the bed until another room opens up."

The room was a decent size, and he noticed the location of the bath. He looked around the room, getting a better feel for it. Where trouble could come from, where they could go if needed. His tutors had trained him very well, as he didn't realize he was doing it until he had finished his gazing.

"So do you want the bath first?"

"Sure, I think it's a good idea. That way it should be clear of Eelsnakes when it's your turn." He fought to keep the smile off his face as he said it. He found a spot to put up his gear, and investigated how the baths in Kraala worked.

"I am sure it will be, with that injury you'd make an easy meal and they'd have no reason to stick around for me." Mel laughed as she watched Len, move behind the privacy screen. She pulled out one of the chairs and sat down, not wanting to get the bed covers wet. It didn't take long for the sound of knobs being turned to fill the room and than the sound of water streaming into the large metal and stone tub.

The tubs in Kraala were the best feature of the Port City really. Every inn had into own team of huge furnaces to heat the water pump from deep natural wells. Rumor had it that Noden had lent some of their own magic skills to the creature of the system, mainly when it came to the furnaces. The water was never able to get hot enough to be a danger to anyone and never ran cold

She began to unlace her boots, glancing towards the screen now and then as she heard wet clothes, hitting the solid wood floor. Outside the storm raged on, uninterrupted. "Once we've warmed up I suppose we can either seclude ourselves up here or head back downstairs and mingle with the rest of the travelers trapped by the rain."

It was too early to consider eating again, but that left plenty of time for wine and taking in the local gossip. Her own curiosity was still eating away at Mel, on just. what was being said either about herself or the impending marriage,

Lentharian got the water temperature just right, and shed his wet clothing. He eased himself into the water, letting the heat soak into his body, helping to remove the ride induced tension.

Lentharian listened to the storm outside. He concentrated on the sounds booming outside, slowly filtering out the noise, allowing him to listen to the words bellowed across the horizon. He relaxed when he heard the equivalent of a rousing song from the Storm spirits above. If they were quarreling, there would be a danger of destructive weather; stronger winds, hail, lightning strikes nearer to populated areas.

"Once we've warmed up I suppose we can either seclude ourselves up here or head back downstairs and mingle with the rest of the travelers trapped by the rain."

The chance to meet and talk to others was a good one, not that he had anything against Melisandra's company. But there was always interesting news floating around that could tip him off to something good by way of trade. Also, there was the troubles in Brask and Noden that had him partially concerned. There were probably numerous rumours running rampant already, but even those would have some truth to them. Somewhere.

His bath complete, he got out and roughly dried himself. It was then he remembered that he had only one shirt, which was soaked. Luckily his other pair of pants were dry, but they were over in one corner of the room. The towel was large enough to wrap around his waist. He picked up his clothes and dropped them in front of the fireplace as he walked over to his gear to fetch what little dry clothing he had left. As he crouched down, the towel exposed the length of his leg, up to and including the side of the buttock.

He looked over at Melisandra. "It's safe, no sign of Eelsnakes anywhere. So, your turn."

"My hero," Melisandra cooed at him playfully as she tried not to ogle the expanse of exposed flesh. "Whatever would I do without you Len?" Getting up she grabbed her saddle bag and headed over to the bath. While the tub drained and was then refilled with fresh hot water, Mel dug out her dry clothes. The privacy screen was thinn but she knew Len would still be able to see the faint outline of her body. Considering what they had bee through in the last day and half, it really wasn't a big issue. Not when she had thoughts like the one from earlier cooking away in her mind.

Humming softly she stripped down, tossed her wet clothes into a small pile before sinking into the steaming water with a loud sigh. "Oh gods, this is great." The heat seeped into her body and washed away the chill that had started to make its way down to her core.

After a few moments of idling away in the water,Mel grabbed the soap and wash rag and began to wash up. "I did just remember though that you only have the one shirt left. So i suppose we well be up here until that one dries out enough for you to wear it. Next time you travel you'll have to remember to back an extra shirt for those unforeseen fights with the local wildlife."

Len smiled as Melisandra withdrew behind the screen. He took the time to put on his dry pants while she was undressing. When he was dressed enough, he put his shirt on the back of a chair for it to dry.

"Oh gods, this is great."

"I'm glad you're enjoying it." Lentharian sat on the floor in front of the fire, staring into the flames. He could see the echo of a small Fire Elemental within, as the fire was not big enough to host such a spirit. Even a small one.

"I did just remember though that you only have the one shirt left. So i suppose we well be up here until that one dries out enough for you to wear it. Next time you travel you'll have to remember to back an extra shirt for those unforeseen fights with the local wildlife."

"It wasn't the wildlife that was the problem, it was the healer. More correctly, the healer's knife."

He sat himself up straight, and let himself slip into a meditative state. He was still in a fair bit of emotional turmoil, and he hoped that the meditation would help him bring it under control. He could hear loud noises, and any normal touch, but less than that, he would not react.

Melisandra laughed softly, "Fine, next time I will leave you in your wet, bloody and torn shirt rather than tending to your wounds." Her laughter was soft, though they both knew the odds of them traveling together much further than here, were minuscule. It was part of the reason why she was contemplating sleeping with Len. Yes she knew he was promised to another, but the truth was if a man had a lover or two before he was married, no one thought twice about it. Giving herself to him, even once was a last resort tactic to prevent her marriage to the Prince of Noden, but one that was looking more and more like a good plan of attack. The real question was, could she live with herself after it was said and done?

With a sigh she finished bathing and then climbed out of the tub and drained the water. Drying herself off and wringing the last of the water from her hair she dressed in her fresh clothing. This time when she dressed, she adjusted the way her bodice sat and didn't tie the top of her top nearly a tight as she normally did. From here on out she could try and gauge her appeal to Len. He could turn her down Mel knew that and expected it more than him accepting what she had to offer.

Walking from around the screen she dumped her things before the fire as well to dry and then laid down upon the bed, bootless and on her back.

Lentharian heard the thump of wet clothing hitting the floor beside him. He slowly brought himself out of his meditation, and looked around. He saw Melisandra's bare feet at the end of the bed. He stood up, and went to his gear, and found a length of twine. He ran it between two chairs, and draped some of the wet clothing over it. He then walked closer to Melisandra.

Len's skin was mostly scar free, he only had one on his ribs which looked like a training accident. He was well toned, with a good amount of muscle but not being muscle bound. His chest and shoulders were broad, and his stomach was nearly flat. In addition, she could clearly see his pendent. It was a silver dragon, perched upon a large emerald, in the standard emerald cut. Clutched in it's front claws was a smaller emerald, and a third very small stone gave the dragon its green eye.

"Nice to see you looking relaxed, Mel. You obviously enjoyed the bath. If you would like to go and mingle, don't stop yourself on my account. I will be ready soon."

He sat down at the end of the bed, looking up at Melisandra. He noticed that the top she was wearing was not closed up as much, and there was something else different about the way she dressed that he couldn't figure out. But she was relaxed, her face had a softer quality to it that made her look more beautiful. Add the mass of hair framing her face...

For the first time he thought of telling her who he really was. But the time was not right for that yet. He didn't feel that she liked him enough to hear that she had been traveling with her fiance. A man she had not 'met' but hated.

He found that he had been staring at her, and broke off his stare with a slightly embarrassed smile. "Sorry, that was rude of me."

Mel swallowed softly as Len came walking towards her, before she had been to worried about his health to notice his body, but now was a different matter. He didn't have a soldier's body by any means, but he was not out of shape. Of course she had been so busy staring that she didn't notice that he had been looking t her just as intently. She shook her head and waved her hand, "Its ok, Len." Without really thinking about it she touched the pendant he had given her as it hung around her neck, the stone nestled between the rise of her breasts. The stones on his were a few shades darker but just as lovely.

Smiling at his offer she met his eyes, "Its nice to know you won't be worried about me down there." Swinging her legs around the bed, the pair were soon sitting together. It was all innocent of course, but with her top and hair the way the were, his lack of a shirt and the fact they were on the bed, to an outsider it would seem there was something going on. "I suppose I might as well head down, if for no other reason than to get an idea from the innkeeper on who might be in need of a bodyguard. We can always eat together later."

The princess also planed for a bit of liquid courage. Just a bit of wine to bolster her conviction and to loosen her tongue as well. Getting to her feet, she let her hand brush his shoulder, as she went to go replace her boots, coin purse, and sword. "And don't go and forget that you are supposed to come downstairs and fall asleep. Otherwise I will eat without you."

After pulling her hair back and adjusting her top, somewhat, Mel nodded to Len and headed from their shared room. Not surprisingly more than a few eyes turned her way, some she knew because she was a woman and some because of the fact she carried a sword. When they had arrived, Mel had been more focused on getting a room. Now, she was focused on those around her as she made her way over to speak with the innkeeper about possible work and to order some wine.

Lentharian was dazzled again by Melisandra's smile. It brought out something deep within her that made her more... complete.

"Its nice to know you won't be worried about me down there."

With that, she was sitting beside him. "I suppose I might as well head down, if for no other reason than to get an idea from the innkeeper on who might be in need of a bodyguard. We can always eat together later."

"Don't forget that I will speak for you if anyone asks about who you have worked for. I have been here enough to have some reputation with traders and caravan masters."

As Melisandra stood, where her hand touched his shoulder sent a wave of goosebumps across his body, closely followed by a wave of warmth. Lentharian blinked a couple of times at the sensation. He had never felt anything like it before, and he was trying to think of a way to get it to happen again.

"And don't go and forget that you are supposed to come downstairs and fall asleep. Otherwise I will eat without you."

"I wont forget, because you will never let me forget." He smiled as she adjusted her appearance before leaving. That simple act hit him harder than the casual touch of her hand when she stood. When she left the room, he waited for a thirty count before he fell back onto the bed.

"Great Gods! What is happening here? What is she doing to me? Or what is it about her that I am doing to myself?" He groaned further at the confusion he felt over his reactions to Melisandra. "Could this be a sign of growing affection? Attraction beyond that of mere appearance? This must be one of the few areas that my tutors and advisors haven't taught me. 'What would a Prince of Noden need to know about love?'"

He hauled himself upright, and found a small bowl. He walked over to his shirt, finding it still to be wet. He placed the bowl under the shirt, sitting down on the floor nearby. He formed a ring with his thumb and forefinger, holding it parallel over the bowl. With words that were low, sonorous, with the hint of the lapping of small waves, he chanted softly. The space encircled by his digits grew misty. From the mist, a heavy, viscous liquid formed and finally dropped into the bowl. Once he heard the heavy thud on the fluid striking the bowl, he stopped his chant and opened his hand.

"True Water," he smiled to himself in satisfaction. He took the bowl, and moved it close to his shirt. "Draw on your lesser self. Call to the water within the garment to you, and bless it with the truth of what it is." A cloud formed around his shirt that was sucked into the bowl. The liquid within grew a little less viscous, and more water like. He took the bowl and placed it on the top of the fireplace. He put on his shirt, and got his sword and knives ready as well.

He sat on the bed for a few minutes, reviewing his business over the next few days, and making sure that he had missed nothing. That, and controlling his thinking regarding Melisandra.

He stood, and made his way to the common room to find Melisandra and enjoy a decent meal with good company.

Her conversation with the innkeeper had only been half successful, while he didn't know of anyone in need of a bodyguard the inn did boast several barrels of Brask wine. After their conversation she had sat herself down at a table by the fire and soon had a large pitcher of wine in front of her with two glasses. One for hr and one for Len when he came down.

The other people in the common room, came and went, some ignoring her, some taking notice of her, but going on about their lives. And then there were some who seemed to think she was worth striking a conversation up with. All of which turned out to be short lived when they realized she was with someone or had no interest in them.

By her second round, Mel had worked up some courage, but also some fire as well as she stared at the man currently sitting across from her. When he had sat down, as she had with previous men, moved the glass out of his reach.

Taking a slow sip she watched him and he sized her up, obvious and blatant. It was enough to make her sigh and roll her yes away from him, "Is there something you want?"

"Well," the man continued to eyeball her, "I was wondering what a lovely young woman such as yourself was doing sitting alone in an inn with two glasses and such a large pitcher of wine." He was handsome in that way that many men were, all looks and no substance. Too polished and refined with nothing inside. It was obvious he was used to women just falling at his feet for him.

"I'm waiting on my travel companion. He's still drying out upstairs."

"Ah well then his loss then. Wet or dry I wouldn't let such a beauty as yourself out of my sight."

Mel smirked softly and held back the laughter that was bubbling up in her throat, "Well its not as if you have a say in such matters. Now if your curiosity is satisfied, kindly remove yourself from my companion's seat." Turning her head she saw Len coming down the stairs just as the man, a merchant by the looks of him pushed himself up to his feet, his face flushed with anger.

"Snobbish who...",it might have been the wine or the fact she wasn't in the mood for any more outside forces, ruining a nice quiet moment, but she had her sword drawn and pointed at him before the insult fully left his lips.

"Now, I am sure a man of your class was raised with better manners like that. If you want to continue to breathing you'll stop while you are still ahead." Mel turned her head back to smirk at him. Flustered the man walked away from the table, nearly toppling the chair over. Chuckling softly she refreshed her glass and filled Len's as he reached her. "Finally some wanted company. I was starting to think you were never going to show."

Lentharian wandered down the stairs, casually taking his time, not hurrying nor being too slow. Melisandra would be relatively safe within the inn. He was sure that she would hold her own against anyone present, verbally at least. When reached the bottom of the stairs, he moved off to one side and started looking for Melisandra.

He saw her with another man, but some instinct told him that it was not business that was being discussed. He felt a momentary surge of anger before he saw Melisandra put the point of her sword to the man's throat. A number of people turned to watch the altercation, and Lentharian started moving closer to giver her help should she need it.

By the time he was close enough, the other man was leaving, angry and embarrassed. Lentharian ignored him, moving to the table where Melisandra was sitting. He watched her fill a glass of wine for him, pushing over as he sat down opposite her.

"Finally some wanted company. I was starting to think you were never going to show."

"And give you the chance to ridicule me for the rest of my life? No thank you." He laughed a little before he took a sip of the wine. As he thought, it was wine from Melisandra's homelands. It was as he was taking the glass from his lips he noticed how she was dressed. Her top was not as secured as normal, but she made sure that she was not too exposed. He also noticed that her bust line was different, a little fuller than normal. His gaze lingered a little longer than he would have liked.

"I may not drink too often, but there is one thing I do know. Wine hits harder on an empty stomach. I think we should get something to eat. And soon." He signaled one of the serving staff, ordering food for them both. He took another sip of the wine, staring at Melisandra. Seeing her in a civilized setting softened her somehow. While on the road, she was a tough and capable traveling companion. Yet sitting across from him, Melisandra was more relaxed and at ease, which gave her an air of seeming softer. More like the woman of noble birth that she was. He saw a woman who could have any man she wanted, and that man would thank the Gods every day.

"Have you had any luck so far?" He asked, referring to her finding work.

"Poorly, the innkeeper was of little help and everyone else seemed to be in the mood to talk about other things than work," She shrugged softly as she took a slow sip of her wine. At the mention of food her stomach, rumbled slightly. Food was a good idea. If she was going through with this Mel didn't want Len to think it was just the wine talking and not her.

As she shifted in her seat, her hand rotated the glass around, the dark red liquid swirling softly,"I suppose I shall have to put any business proposals off until tomorrow when the rain stops. So let's celebrate the fact we aren't stuck out in the rain and that we have a warm bed, a roof over out heads and good hot food to eat that we didn't have to sweat over the fire for." Mel touched her glass to his, "Oh and of course each other's company."

There was only a slight wait before the girl was back with two heavy platters laden with food; roasted chicken and vegetables, hot and soft bread, cheese and some fruit. They both gave their thanks to her before she left to attend to the other customers. The food was good and very filling and Mel made sure that she didn't drink all of the wine out from under Len.

Licking vegetable broth from her lips, Mel glanced Len's way across the table. Just as before in their room, she knew he was paying more attention to her than before. That was what she wanted, so it was just a matter of not losing her nerve. Halfway through their meal, the inn's minstrel came in and set up by the fireplace. Soon the room was filled not only with the sound of conversation and glasses moving but also music. It was very much a relaxed setting and for a moment, Mel could pretend that her life wasn't as complicated as it actually was.

"... So let's celebrate the fact we aren't stuck out in the rain and that we have a warm bed, a roof over out heads and good hot food to eat that we didn't have to sweat over the fire for." Mel touched her glass to his, "Oh and of course each other's company."

"All worthy of celebrating just on their own. But time with my traveling companion is definitely worth celebrating. This is a time that I will not forget anytime soon, for certain."

The arrival of food reminded him of his hunger. He ate rapidly at first, until the edge of the hunger was gone, then he slowed down. Because of Melisandra's presence, Lentharian was drinking more than he normally would. Mainly because he was unknowingly match Melisandra's drinking rate. He was not as experienced a drinker, as the Noden Royal family had the habit of remaining sober as a safe guard against any accidents involving magic. And given the taste of the Brask wine, it was easy for Lentharian to get a little too under the weather quickly.

The arrival of the minstrel helped to make the atmosphere a little more relaxed. The lighting of the inn made Melisandra look more appealing that ever. He had to think of how to get her to change her mind about her marriage. Having spent time with her, he found himself attracted to her. She was more like the kind of woman he wanted to marry, rather than the shy, quiet thing she had been presented as.

"Mel," he asked tearing off a piece of bread to soak up some of the gravy and juices of his dinner. "What is it about marrying your fiance that is really upsetting to you? You haven't even met the man, yet you're forming opinions of him. Don't get me wrong. You can think what you like of anyone. But is it fair to judge him when you know little or nothing of him? How would you feel if you found out that he had been making judgments about you without knowing anything about you?"

Lentharian drained his glass. "Pardon me for saying it, but it is a very Brask like attitude about my countrymen. Very few of you seem to take the time out to get to know us. You're all just happy to think of us a spell casting demon calling crazy people who are a danger to the world. Which we are not. The Pri... Your fiance is a decent man. He's liked by his people, because he helps them. He might not be as close to them as you, Mel. But with the training to use the magic that's his family legacy, and all the other responsibilities that come form being a King to be, he wouldn't have the time to sneak around and meet the common folk."

Lentharian felt jealous of Melisandra for the freedoms she had, and what she was doing now. He poured himself another glass, half draining it before resuming eating and staring at Melisandra again.

"Oh that's just it Len, I am sure he already has. I told you I know my father and that pompous, arrogant, windbag of an adviser of his have taken stretching the truth to a whole new level in regards to myself." Mel topped off both their glasses with the last of the wine as she sat back with hers. Looking towards the fire she watched the orange and yellow flames dance back and forth. "As as for my objections, because even if he wasn't from Noden I would still say no. Because whether I like it or not if I go home the two of us are to be married. Hellfire, whether HE likes it or not. Our parents have seen fit to push us into this, with no regards to how we may feel to try and mend the lingering wounds of a war, our forefathers started."

Her tongue flicked over the fullness of her bottom lip slowly, "I had the childhood I had because my father for the longest time was lost in the grief of my mother's death. Believe me as much as it was to be able to be a normal child so to speak I would have preferred to spend more time with him. It should have been him telling me stories about my mother and the woman she was, not our servants. And when he did decide to pay real attention to me it was to try and mold me into what he thought a proper princess was. My guess to try and dampen to influence of my mother's spirit. She wasn't a proper princess, or a queen for that matter either."

Looking back at Len, Mel's eyes had darken a little bit with emotion, "As for the opinions of the people, I am more than sure there are many in Noden who feel the same in regards to the people of Brask as well." Shrugging she took a long sip of her wine before continuing on, "Len how can I explain something like not wanting an arranged marriage to someone who is content to go froward with his own? You've gotten to learn who you are, but you are happy with how your life has been directed and influenced by others. I'm not and before you mention getting to know him, by the time I DO have the chance to get to know him we will already be married. Time is against me on this one and for the moment I am content to continue to fight my way upstream and away from my fiance."

They finished their dinner and spent the rest of time enjoying the singing talents of the minstrel. At one point Mel found herself singing along with the young man, when he began a familiar tune.

Bring us in good ale, and bring us in good ale,
For our blessed lady’s sake, bring us in good ale.

Bring us in no brown bread, for that is made of bran;
Nor bring us in no white bread, for there-in is no game:

But bring us in good ale...

Bring us in no beef, for there is many bones;
But bring us in good ale, for that goes down at once:

And bring us in good ale...

Bring us in no bacon, for that is passing fat;
But bring us in good ale, and give us enough of that:

And bring us in good ale...

Bring us in no mutton, for that is often lean;
Nor bring us in no tripes, for they are seldom clean:

But bring us in good ale...

Bring us in no eggs, for there are many shells;
But bring us in good ale, and bring us nothing else:

And bring us in good ale...

Bring us in no butter, for there are many hairs;
Nor bring us in no pig’s flesh, for that will make us boars:

But bring us in good ale...

Bring us in no puddings, for there-in’s all goats blood;
Nor bring us in no venison, for that’s not for our good:

But bring us in good ale...

Bring us in no capon’s flesh for that is often dear;
Nor bring us in no ducks flesh, for they slobber in the mere:

But bring us in good ale...

And after a short conversation with the minstrel, once the applause had died down and handing him a few coins the pair headed back upstairs, little unsteady due to the wine. closing the door behind them Mel smirked, "Alright before we get down to sleeping you need to take your shirt off so I can check your shoulder. That was a long ride earlier and I'm not going to be able to sleep without checking it." She pointed at him to sit on the bed while she tossed another log on the fire. It was a now or never sort of moment and no matter the outcome there was no going back.

Joining Len on the bed after he removed his shirt, Mel unwrapped his shoulder and gently but firmly ran her fingers over the bruised flesh. Most of the swelling had gone down, but even she could tell the injury was still tender. "Well at least all that riding didn't move things out of place." Shifting so that she was almost behind him, Mel began to gently massage his shoulder, working out the knot of flesh she had found during her inspection. She hummed as she worked, her fingers working out from their original position, "Len I have to ask you something. I know there is a chance you will say no, but I have to ask. You're the only person right now that I could ask something like this."

Lentharian listened to her answers, the very same ones she had used the first time. He was not thinking clearly enough to argue with her about it. If she wanted time to 'get to know' her fiance a little better, he would be able to make sure that she had the time available to get to know him before they wed. Again.

Melisandra started singing along to one of the tunes the minstrel played. He half closed his eyes, as his finished the glass of wine, enjoying the sounds of her voice. He was smiling broadly by the time the song was finished.

They somehow managed to get to their room without any major problems. Lentharian staggered into the room.

"Alright before we get down to sleeping you need to take your shirt off so I can check your shoulder. That was a long ride earlier and I'm not going to be able to sleep without checking it."

Lentharian nodded, not remembering that she never made such an offer when they last camped. He made it to the bed, and managed to remove his shirt without hurting his shoulder.

Melisandra removed the binding on his shoulder. The occasional touches as she did it were nice. A lot nicer than when she checked the bone. Her fingers brought forth grimaces and movements to remove the source of the pain from his shoulder.

"Well at least all that riding didn't move things out of place."

Lentharian was a little confused when Melisandra moved around behind him. Before he could ask, she started to massage his shoulder. His breathing was deep , his eyes closed as he focused on what she was doing for him. She concentrated on a knot that as it disappeared, it removed a large amount of tension and pain from his shoulder. He moaned as her fingers loosened up his stiff and sore muscles. He had been massaged before, but it had never felt that good.

"Len I have to ask you something. I know there is a chance you will say no, but I have to ask. You're the only person right now that I could ask something like this."

Her words started dragging his mind back from the restful place it had been while Melisandra had been massaging him. He had been thinking of her. The more he thought of her, the more he finally saw that his feelings for her were deeper than he had thought.

"Hmmmm... by the Gods you have good hands. A strong will and determination. Courage to stand for what you believe in. Resourcefulness to do what needs to be done. And a beauty that is unsurpassed. It's no wonder that I love you..."

He heard the words in his own ears, only then realizing that he had spoken them aloud. The he remembered Melisandra's question, and quickly spoke hoping she hadn't heard him.

"What do you want to ask me, Mel?"
