Contemporary setting: Dad takes his two sons out to help on his job of checking the mermaid population. Mermaids are intelligent but they have trouble communicating by standard means. Dad however seems pretty apt at their form of sign language. And he tells sons they need to learn it before summer is over. Sons become intimate with a couple mermaids and they then realize “oh shit, if dad has been keeping the population up, those could have been our sisters?”
Dad just laughs: no, they do have mermaid sisters and he’ll introduce them later but it’s rare a single coupling will create a mermaid baby. They usually have to keep some guys underwater for months at a time…speaking of, he needs help driving some cars from an airbnb to a scrapper.
Fantasy setting: while elves are insulted to be put on a list like wild animals, their birth rate is going down so the conservationists come to help them with their problem
