Do we have any Mac users here? Can I politely ask what you guys see in these things? I'm on one now, my aunt's iMac, and I don't see what all the hoopla was about. Personally I think this machine is dumbed down so as to be barely functional. I'm not insulting anyone, but I just don't get it.

Macs are big...

in the printing industry... they have an edge when it comes to graphics....

of course we use PCs where i work... ya think maybe thats why the Image Setter keeps screwing up?

It is true that after the intellectual challenges presented by PC's (I've yet to use one without a major conflict developing between any program I care to use and Windows, requiring lots of tweaking, manual reading, and ripping out of the hair), the humble Mac can seem like a no-brainer.

However, I understand they are absolutely marvelous for graphics, and my friends who work in the film industry swear by them.

Mac's are great for art work , design, and web work....thats about it...............

Go to a computer store 80% will be IBM and 20 % Mac......

In my professional work I've always used PCs. I recall the first lame version of Microsoft's graphical user interface which was only a slight improvement over the shell they developed atop DOS. I never understood what the big deal was about the Macintosh, those tiny little boxes with a nine inch screen.

A few years back I became friends with a guy who was a designer with Adobe, the makers of Photoshop, Pagemaker and Illustrator. Based on his recommendation I ended up buying an Apple Powerbook and began my lesson in the Macintosh operating system. I was blown away by how easily I could manage files compared with Microsoft's Windows. After enjoying that computer for a couple of years I bought an iMac which I'm using at this moment. It's 400 mhz processor with 384 MB of RAM and is faster than a speeding bullet. It virtually never crashes unless I'm in Internet Explorer, another Microsoft product.

My friend is a computer consultant who works exclusively on Macs. A couple of weeks ago he visited a relative who was having trouble with his new PC. As a favor my friend debugged the problem, speaking on the telephone with Microsoft techies. They guided him through a clean reinstall of the operating system, which required reformatting the hard drive. As you can imagine, that necessitated reinstalling every piece of software after the operating system was reinstalled. He spent all day at the process. When we spoke on his return he said the experience demonstrated for him once again the inferiority of the MS-Intel machines. He could perform the same task on a Macintosh in about an hour.

I couldn't be happier with everything about my Mac. The fact its easy to use is a delight. Having it hooked up to AT&T cable only adds to the enjoyment of cruising the internet. I doubt I could go back to a dial-up connection. And I can imagine nothing in the world that would cause me to trade-in my Mac for a Windows machine.

It hasn't been mentioned above, but the Mac is the machine of choice for music production. I've been with a friend who's completing an album while he worked at two professional studios. Both producers use Macs. Now that's a process that would blow you away. What they can do with computer technology in creating music is breathtaking. I did some vocals and watching them work with the tracks was amazing.

I had an older Power Mac that died last summer. I bought a PC, but wish I had spent a little more & gotten an iMac. Windows software sucks sewer water, I had more problems with viruses in the first month than I did in 2 years with the Mac.The MacAfee that came on the PC missed 2/3 of the viruses, so my sweetie got Norton for me, which is much better. Outlook Express has to be one of the worst email programs ever made. I can't do as much of the music, graphics & things like that on this PC, but my sweetie has a regular Mac & an iMac that I use occasionally. He also has DSL & we are looking for a place in an area where we can get DSL, it isn't available in all areas of the Metroplex yet. I love that Macs is easy to use, I am not real computer literate & the directions that come with Microsoft software make very little sense to an amatuer like me.

I have to use an old Mac Performa 6300 because I lost my Packard Bell to the ex-wife. It sucks. Internet Explorer, Word, and Messenger all keep crashing. As soon as I can afford it, it's back to some version of Windows PC.

This is all too technical for me ...

... but I do like their big red apples. Very juicy and full of flavour.

Mac's Rock.

Do you like driving your car, or fixing your car?

I like driving.

"Windows" Sucks. I've done it.

I have 3 computer. 2 PC and 1 MAC. Now also own Windows 98 SE, Windows ME, Windows 2000 and a MAC OS.

Now I have used all of them, and in my opinnion Windows 2000 is the best for me. Because I am working to be a network tech. Any ways, Windows 2000 is crap when it comes rto games or multimedia. Windows ME is the best Windows for multimedia, but crashes alot. Windows 98 SE, is ok I guess, ok with multimedia, and great for games.

The MAC OS 9 is the best for multimedia, but sucks to use. If you going to use a Mac, I would say MAC OS 9. I have donereaserch on MAC OS 10, it sucks in every way, totaly unreliable, and needs MAC OS 9 to run most programs. In my opinnion Macs suck.

Give me Windows any day. Mac sucks for everything but multimedia. Every thing from web design to game can be used on Windows.

Just my view no need to flame me.

I hate macs. the people that created them should be shot. personally, i find that windows 2000 works best out of win95, win98, win98SE, and winME. I like my pc and what it can do. it does everything i want it to, and more. and as far as graphics and music and multimedia, for the most part, if this thing cant do it, i can usually find a program online somewhere (that's free of course) that can do it.

macs, on the other hand, are created for the average idiot. they are annoying as ever and you cant run more than one program at a time on them. and they have no logical use beyond for a graphic artist.

I absolutely love it when friends or work contacts complain about Windows and PCs. I am very proud to say that in my entire office there is not one Microsoft product on any machine. Because of this we don't need to have a tech support department.

Plus, there is the fact that Macs are absolutely to die for on the design front. The Cube was revolutionary in every way - I really can't understand why it didn't sell well.

How's life on planet coo coo anyway?

I've got an ancient Quadra 6000 Mac running on a pathetic OS 7.5.3 and I can run ten different applications simultaneously.

I Love My Mac !!!!!

I got the iMac top of the line and I LOVE IT. I had been working with pc and windows. I think the macs are more logical and who needs to have a product as user unfriendly as Windows. I wouldn't go back to a pc for anything. Besides the design is just too way cool. Even the gayboy red ones...Flagg my cute little bro how are you these days?

I wish I could go Mac......

But my organization won't let me/us.

The bean counter's look at the entire systems expense as "an investment."

How stupid is that? PC's cost them everywhere - in every area - except one - compatability.

God I hate bean counter's.

Fuck you
by not buying a mac you've
sold your
SOUL
to William Gates

I can't even BEGIN to figure out why you did a search for a thread that ended four months ago. you must really, really, really hate Microsoft. LOL

Tally so far...

9-love mac
3-hate it
3-maybe's
1-loves eating juicy apples
1- very happy on the planet coo coo

;)

Hey it's me up there:D God I had forgotten when I actually registered with the Gingersnap name.... Still using my imac and was out today looking at digital video cams. I need fodder for my imovie II playtime.... This thing is so much fun!!

Macs are leaders in graphic development, Most colleges and design schools use Mac because of this. Them being "dumb-downed is made up for in the programs they have (In my opinon)

I'm not saying the Mac platform is dying, but...

Adobe didn't even bother to attend this year's MacWorld Expo. They bailed "for economic reasons", they claimed. (Read: it's no longer economically viable to support the Mac platform.) I still don't understand why a Mac is 3-4x more expensive than a comparably priced PC, but what do I know.

I have both Mac's and PC's at home - there are advantages and disadvantages to both...
<P>
You know... not only are Macs more expensive - everything for them is more expensive as well - RAM is 2x as much as PC Ram...

I think it was best said by an ad that Apple ran for a few months when they were competing heavily against the Tandy TRS-80. The ad stated very simply, "In the future there will be two kind of people. Those who have computers and those who have Apples."
