I hate ma'am, though I do get it from time to time.

However, I have been referred to as a lady so much since I started my job.

I wish I'd had that much time before the name began.

It was my sophomore year of college. I'd let my beard grow out for a modern-day version of Anouilh's "Antigone" (more modern-day than it was originally set, that is), and was in town over a break visiting my old high school.

I'd arrived a few minutes too early for dismissal that day, and so was caught up in the mass exodus outside the cafeteria as classes let out. I stopped for a drink from a water fountain, and then was looking at my watch and then around the crowd trying to make up my mind which teacher to drop by and see first.

A voice addressed me from my immediate left, and a soft hand touched my arm. I turned to see one of the girls--my impression was of a junior or sophomore, no freshmen at my school back then--and she repeated, "Can I help you, sir?"

I took a breath, smiled, and shook my head. "No, thanks, just deciding where to go first."

With you at 21 and me about to be 41, you'll forgive me for sometimes thinking you *are* still a girl. :rose:

It's a bad habit, I know, but I mentally just think of women younger than myself (especially if they're noticeably younger) as being girls.

I imagine it would get old pretty damned quick, the "Yes Mistress" thing. It would be too easy, and that would make it monotonous. However, if the guy is occasionally insolent and rebellious... Power struggles can really get the juices flowing. ;)
