i am running windows millenium editionif that helps any
does anyone have any ideas or similar problems?

I have had the same problems before and I couldn't figure it out so I just reformatted...everythings cool now

Windows ME is a notorious pain in the ass, with lots of flaws in its design. One big problem is that scandisk and defrag don't run reliably (or at all) unless you are in safe mode. If you've been trying to use the system tools the way you would with a normal operating system, that might be the problem.

You can get into safe mode by restarting the computer and hitting F8 as it starts to get to a menu that offers safe mode as an option (I think it's option 3 on the menu). Safe mode disables all your devices, so the screen will look terrible, the CD-Rom won't work, etc., but you only have to stay there long enough to run the scan disk and the defrag. Restart the machine when you're done and see how things go.

I find that with a 40 gig hard drive and Windows ME, I have to defrag the thing about once a week or it starts to behave erratically. I'm get ready to change operating systems so I don't have to bother with all that anymore. ME is just the worst O/S Microsoft ever made.

Oh no not M.E. ......

Hi, tin tinr. Unfortunately you are up and running under Microsofts biggest goose egg. My Dell came with Microsoft M.E. and I remember numerous problems with start up and shut down procedures. It would throw in the occasional crash. I finally updated my M.E. to Microsoft Professional 2000 (NT technology)and never had a problem since. I recommended changing to either Windows Pro 2000, or Windows XP. You will be a happier camper with your P.C.........:D :D :D

Jaded1, CT:devil:

PS. You can us the Microsoft Window Pro 2000 Upgrade version to up grade your machine for M.E. to Window Pro 2000. Microsoft won't tell you that. They would like you to believe you have to purchase the full version of Window Pro 2000 to utilize the NT technology and reliablity..... ;) So don't tell anyone else.......

a big thankyou to all of you who have replied
i think i am going to upgrade to windows xp
i thought it was just me who had problems with M.E
