Addison Parch
I'd known Lyndi pretty much her whole life. Her dad was one of my best friends. He had been in San Francisco when she was born, but moved back to Port Johnson before she turned a year old, and I had watched this remarkable child grow and grow and grow. Now she was twenty two, her family had moved back west, and a few months ago she came to work for me at the Alternative Bookstore. I knew she'd be a good worker, though I had no idea just how passionate she was about books, and about alternative living.
Today, however, she seemed under the weather, and it wasn't long before I drew out of her that she had had a fight with her boyfriend, and that they had called it quits. Just as well. He wasn't a bad kid, he treated her well, and he wasn't a dimwit like most of the boys his age, but I knew that she could do far better.
Apparently she wasn't so sure of that. She had filled her normally fertile mind with tons of self-doubt.
"Oh, Addy, I dont know if I'll ever really be in love. Either the boys are just too boring, or they find me too weird. I never seem to find a happy medium."
"Honey, don't you dare compromise yourself to conform to these guys. You are way too good for any of the guys I've seen you with. Really, Lyndi, you can do much better."
"Well, you're just too kind. But, look at me! I'm a freak. I don't have anything exciting to offer a guy. It's really depressing."
I looked at her, long and hard, so hard that I started to become hard, cause she was just my cup of tea. But I knew what she meant. Her looks were not classic bombshell. Hers was a much more natural beauty, exactly what I wanted, but not so much what the shallow guys in her peer group craved. They wanted that Britney Bimbo look, and her look was much more Sarah Polley.
I stepped closer, taking her face in my hands and wiping the tears from the corner of her eyes. She looked at me lovingly, the way she always had when I came to her rescue. And while I hadn't planned it this way, I spontaneously lifted her lips to my own and gave her a long deep passionate kiss that left her limp and perhaps in shock. I let go of her, and stared into her longing eyes.
"Sorry, Lyndi. I just wanted you to know that when you kiss someone, THAT's how it should feel. And I'm very clear that you are capable of such passion. And now you know it, too. It's the boys you've been hanging out with that are lacking, not you. Now, please, take the rest of the day off, and go out and enjoy yourself, and don't stop until you feel like that again."
