PETA, NAMBLA, GLAAD and the NYRA should make common cause to pass Catherine’s Law.

All except the most extreme right-wing fundamentalists have repudiated Biblical prohibitions against alternative sexual orientation. Too little attention, alas, has been paid to Leviticus 18:23:

Neither shalt thou lie with any beast to defile thyself therewith: neither shall any woman stand before a beast to lie down thereto: it is confusion. (KJV)

Confusion indeed! Hasn’t the author heard of our Constitution? of its absolute guarantee of freedom of pleasure? We must not stop with gay marriage and liberating the Boy Scouts. When animal husbandry is threatened, all our liberties are at risk.

PETA has been in the vanguard attacking the vile prejudice of speciesism. Animals have rights equivalent to those of humans. We must not discriminate against our alternatively intellected counterparts in the so-called “lower orders” of the evolutionary scale. As Professor Peter Singer argued in his manifesto Animal Liberation: A New Ethics for Our Treatment of Animals, the suffering or happiness of non-humans such as chimpanzees is no less than that of humans who are mentally impaired in some way, such as very young children or the mentally retarded..

So-called “animal sodomy” laws are just one more evidence of our tyranny of opposable thumbs. It is bad enough that we enslave animals, kill them and eat them. Should we abrogate their freedom of sexual expression? We must earn their trust through love. Animal husbandry is a vital step towards true respect for our furry and feathered friends. Who would attack in the kitchen that which he has just enjoyed in the bedroom?

According to Beatrice and Ronald Gross, authors of The Children's Rights Movement: Overcoming the Oppression of Young People, “age is no precondition to human rights”.
The National Youth Rights Network has pointed out that “Youth have no right to decide where they live or who they live with, what religion to practice. They do not even have control over their own bodies.” Who are we to decide at what age an animal may fully enjoy sexual fulfillment with a human being? We must of course respect the cultural norms of various species. No one would argue that a camel comes of age as early as a chicken. It is clear that the present statutory limits are arbitrary and capricious.

We must petition Congress to pass “Catherine’s Law”. It is named in memory of Catherine the Great, who surely would have survived had she been allowed a colt rather than a horse.
