I hate to be redundent here, but again I have proven to myself that the choice of category one posts a story to totally affects the number of views, number of comments and the number of votes.

I have this epic story posted in the Romance section called Death by Fucking. Not to brag, but it is pretty good. It received the Golden Clitorides award as long story of the year by a new author for 2004. It won the Golden Clit for Humor Story of the Year. It came in 2nd for Long Story of the Year, all authors. Okay, I've established it's bonafides. So why the hell doesn't anyone read the damn thing?

For example, Chapter 11 of DbF, which I think is a pretty good chapter, has had 7891 views and 77 votes since it got posted in October, 2003.

But What is and What Should Never Be, a story that got itself posted at 3AM THIS MORNING (it is now 11AM) in the Loving Wives section already has 2431 views and 61 votes.

revision: After 19 hours, What is and What Should Never Be has 8201 vies and 108 votes. Loving Wives (and Incest) stories blow all the other ones away.

Every time I post something I go through the same rant. It has reached the point that I only want to post Loving Wives stories so I can get some readership.

My last LW story, Woulda Coulda Shoulda posted about a month ago, has almost 35000 views, far more than any chapter of Death by Fucking. And you know what, the thing is a little throw-away piece of shit. I wrote it just to get used to writing again. I figured it was okay, but barely good enough to post.

Had I posted that story in the Romance section it would have had a couple of thousand views and then disappeared in obscurity.

Life isn't fair.

But, this is a porn board. Romance and Erotic Couplings just aren't going to get as many reads. As for LW, my guess is that there are a lot of husbands and wives out there in need of a little spicey reading.

I wonder if the length of your Romance story has anything to do with the voting. Are your Loving Wives stories short? I have had a pretty decent number of votes on all but one of my stories, and I still don't know what happened with that one. It's a group story, but for some reason only has 47 votes. I really liked that story too.

I think that the categories that get the most views are Loving Wives and Incest. The one nice thing about the Romance category is the ratio of votes to views.

For instance: My Erotic Horror story, Possession, was posted on 10-14-04, has 19510 views, and 59 votes, so it has a voting percentage of .003.

Compare that to the one Romance story I have, The Warrior's Song, which posted on 3-11-05, has 3067 views and 56 votes, with a voting percentage of .018.

Another huge difference is the score. Romance readers are very kind-hearted and generous in their votes. Go back and check the monthly winners for the last four or five months, and you'll find that a majority of them are in the Romance category. Some months, all three winners are Romance.

Yeah, poetry is tough to get votes on. I have 17 on one and that's high!

Another category which is very short on reads and votes is Chain Stories. The Lit Olympics did pretty well, probably because so many AH personas were involved, but my other one - part of the Zodiac Girls chain - has had very few reads and votes. It's a shame, in a way, because it is a stand-alone story and I think it's pretty decent. It would actually fit much better in Erotic Horror, were it not a chain story.

I have posted a few chapters of a novel here, and every chapter have gotten more and more praise....
...but less and less reads.

I'd kill for 7000 reads on my latest installment of it. Biut I think the answer to your dilemma is that people see the Ch. 11 tag and think "Do I hafta read all the previous 10 first to get tthe point? Naah, can't be botheted." An long multi chapter story will mostly keep it's fans, but gain no new spontaneous ones after it's grown too long. At least that's my guess.

The higher your chapters go, Bull, the fewer reads and votes you're going to get. The only people that are going to read chapter 11 of a story are those who have already read and greatly enjoyed chapters 1 through 10.

On the upside, your votes will likely average higher because the only people reading are the ones who really like your work. :)

Edit - And what Liar said. He says it better. :D

This is my most read story and the 2nd lowest in ratings....

Away for the Weekend While hubby's away, wife will play.
Rate: 4.16 votes: 225 Views: 61664

Category: Anal (English)

poetry:

most reads....
Just A Taste

Rate: 4.68 vote: 28 Views: 1499 Erotic Poetry

Then I have another poem that has very low reads but an incredibly high score....

I don't know it works or what readers looks for sometimes..

Tell me about it!

I had one story ('Rescuing Rhonda' - Mature) post last Friday. It had picked up almost 300 votes by Friday evening (GMT) and went to 400 in 24 hours. My contribution to the 'Magic in America' chain, 'Long Walker' posted this morning. Total of votes so far - 4!

I've written stories for Loving Wives, BDSM, Reviews and Essays, Non-Erotic Poetry, and Erotic Poetry. My first submission was in Loving Wives, so I was really excited when I got so many views. Right now, the views are at
15, 440 and it posted last month. However, imagine my surprise when my second story, in BDSM, didn't fare nearly as well. It currently sits with
4, 682 views (I didn't realize BDSM didn't have as big a following). But, my submission to Reviews & Essays, "Women Are Nasty, Too" (*shameless plug*) currently only has 7, 469 views, but it's been voted on 88 times (more than any other submission) and has 15 public comments (again, more than any other submission).

And the poetry -- I'm with you all on that one. My non-erotic poem has the most votes with a whopping 10, and 170 views. My erotic poem has 7 votes and 250 views. I love to write poetry, but I'm starting to wonder if it's worth posting it to Literotica.

My 2 centavos,

You both said it better than I will, but it's true. I can't ever see myself writing another chapter story again. Some of these stories I see on here with chapter 15 etc. and I don't even bother to look at them, so why would that many people look at mine either? Who wants to make that kind of commitment and try to keep track of all these characters?

On the other hand, if you made one or two long stories out of it, it would do much better, or at least that's been my experience. Readers aren't afraid of long stories as much as being kept waiting for something that might not even get finished, for all they know.

Other factors that determine how many reads you get are the day they first go up, and their position on the New page as well. Also, a couple of weeks ago when very few stories were getting put up due to Laurel's vacation, if you managed to get one on, it got a whole lot of hits due to the lack of competition.

Romance is dominated by a couple of authors, and I've figured out that they do it better than I do, so I'm staying away. ;)

I general I agreee with your conclusions on chapters and reads, Minsue. However, I have trolls who read each and every chapter of anything I submit and bomb said chapter. Why me?

I think it says more about the sad existence of a person with nothing else to do but haunt somebody than it does about your work.

A logical assumption, but wrong! In fact there is absolutely no rhyme nor reason following the views of this particular opus of mine (Death by Fucking).

Check this out:
Chp Views Votes Score
1 20500 146 4.67
2 16441 159 4.65
3 24238 147 4.84
4 19961 137 4.80
...
8 9909 91 4.77
9 14034 80 4.76
10 28138 89 4.79
...
15 8603 86 4.77
16 11790 85 4.84
....
20 7321 78 4.77
...
22 12125 72 4.85
23 25471 107 4.91

If someone discerns a pattern here, kindly let me know. My most read chapters were #10, followed by #23, followed by #3, followed by #1.

Although the number of voters seemed to be pretty consistent, the views were all over the board, and the chapter # didn't seem to effect the # of views.
