Now I am one of those anal types who keeps track of the number of votes his stories have. I noticed a couple days ago that two of my stories lost a single vote. Since the average dropped slightly, I assumed they were both a five.

These were not recent votes either and had been standing for a long time. What is up with that?

Is this a computer problem, editor playing favorites or what?

There's over 15000 stories on the site. It may take some time for Laurel to go through the votes and make sure they're all above board. She does that more heavily around contest time for stories that could possibly make it into the running, to make sure no one is artificially keeping others out or putting themselves in.

Neither of these stories are in a contest. The votes on them have been stable for a long time. What is option number 2?

Option number two is that she's got a list of stories from her bot that has some questionable IPs next to votes. She goes through the list, not very quickly, but she does go through it.

The scripts have an automatic program that goes through all the votes on a regular basis and searches for IP patterns. These are reported to the webmaster and then dealt with. Usually left alone, sometimes the votes will disappear.

All voting systems have fraud. Lit does the best they can to deal with that issue.

Opting Out Of The Vote.

This is undoubtedly a dumb question, but it is something that has been bothering me for some time.

The voting at Literocity is subject to the casting of vindictive 1 votes, as well as the casting of fraudulent 5 votes. This would be of little consequence, if all readers voted. However, when a writer gets 29 votes out of 7,400 views, it has a real import.

Is the writer to believe that 7,371 of the viewers were so disinterested that they did not finish reading the story? If so, how does that explain the strange case, where the feedback outnumbers the vote?

There seems to be no way of separating the ‘reads' from the ‘views,' or the real votes from the manipulative votes. If so, can this ‘rating' system be said to honestly rate anything?

Therefor, my question is twofold:

Can one turn off the voting feature, without affecting feedback? Obviously, few writers would agree to close off the voting, if it also disables the reader feedback

What effect would disabling the vote option have upon how a story is displayed to potential readers? Once disabled, the story will lack a "vote / views" rate.

I would probably opt out of the voting, except for not knowing the answer to that question. At the moment, I hesitate to do this. It appears to me that if I opt out of the (possibly fraudulent) voting, it would also mean consigning my stories to second class representation at Literocity.

You may opt out of voting without affecting your feedback.

This is where you allow anonymous feedback globally and where you allow your email address to be available:

http://members.literotica.com/members/main_options.php

This is your view submissions page, you may turn the voting on or off here for any comination of works that you like:

http://members.literotica.com/members/submissions_view.php

There is one downside to turning off the voting. You will not be eligible for monthly contests. If you wish to remain eligible, you should leave the voting on.

Since I had already seen this portion of every writer's submission page, I assumed that the former question could be done.

I don't consider opting out of contests a 'downside' either.

Thanks for the reassurance.

However, that doesn't answer my second question.

All turning off voting does is turn off voting. The other feedback options remain in place.

In the story category listings, where the votes are listed next to the story, instead of a number you will see a (x.xx).

The view are not displayed to readers except in the Top Views list. The views counter should still work on the author side.

As far as I know, turning off voting does not affect the views counter at all, but if someone else sees differently, please let me know.

The voting was added to stories at author's request. If it is not a feature you are interested in, you have the option of turning it off.

Voting fraud is not unique to Literotica, nor is it unique to the web.

Speaking of votes, the other day I attempted to vote on a new story, and it said I had already voted....and in fact it did it on every story I attempted to vote on. Now I know I am getting old, but I am not that far along. The next day I could vote on stories...Is there something weird going on with my cookies? Is it the site? Am I being singled out for torture?

Ah yes the "one" vote. It seems all my recent stories, as soon as they are published have a "one" vote. I hope that is because the stories suck and not just some asshole. By the end of the day, they are in that 3-4 range. Maybe we can do this olympic style, throw out the top and bottom ten percent of the votes.

Okay back up...
I think that the site had problems dear. Give it a chance to settle (actually I think it has now :) ).

If you're here and you are dependent on your votes ratings for being 'top dog', then I think you're really in the wrong place. Personally, I think there are way too many variables for specific rankings to have an overly important impact. If you use your rankings (once they settle down - give it a month or so) to give you an idea of where your own writing is at and if you have enough submissions, then over time you will see your improvements.

sorry for the above, sometimes i just can't help myself ;)

You're really Katharine Harris, aren't you?

I know who I am and it's not Katharine Harris. Who is she?

oh, that's where the 'Floridah' expression came from methinks...

i don't recall it being one specific person that the voting problems happened through though, but that could have been my missing the news at the time of the election.
