Sometimes the self absorbed try to make everything about them, as that's what they do. I call them Me Monsters. Sometimes they are fun, as you can get them on a rampage and it's entertaining. Sometimes those people are annoying.

Other than visiting this thread almost daily, occasionally, if a thread title catches my eye, I will read through a few threads here in the Playground, and I also read through the BDSM forums but rarely comment.

I don't see anyone that I consider self absorbed. It's not something I have ever noticed. I hope that I am not one of them. It's always difficult to see yourself objectively rather than subjectively.

If I did see this, I would just go with the flow. *shrug*

Everyone is different and unique. It's one of the things that makes humanity so beautiful.

ETA: I also love to lurk in the poetry forum. Again, there are some wonderful, awesome, and brilliant people that post there regularly, but no one that I would consider self absorbed.

As far as the derailments go, it depends. Sometimes I like to join in, if I know the people or find the topic amusing, particularly if it occurs on a thread set up for silliness. It’s fun, and relaxing. If I don’t know the players or the derail lacks appeal, I usually wander off, though I may check in occasionally to see what direction things have taken. It can be annoying, not to mention rude, when “playing” posters take over a thread started by someone seriously looking for answers to a particular question.

So, I guess my answer varies, dependent on the situation.

Yes, I absolutely agree, Endless. We are all self absorbed to a certain extent. It's all a matter of degree.

If we aren't focusing our energy on others, it will naturally turn toward ourselves. It takes a lot of discipline and self awareness to become "other centered".

Degree and presentation. Extrovert, introvert, different personality types are going to express their self-absorption in a different way. Some flamboyantly, others more reserved, or at least a little more quietly.

It depends on the topic of the derailment and who is involved. I'm definitely guilty of hijacking threads
and trying to cause derailment but only for fun not to be mean.
Sometimes people around Lit can be way too serious and a little derailment can
be a good thing. But sometimes people do it to scream "look at meeee, listen to meeee"
Or to be mean. Those ones I avoid. I don't have the patience for arseholes and drama lhamas.
