Chained seems to be MIA today. So, I'll ask a question about which I'm curious. Maybe it has been asked before, as I've only been part of this thread for a few months. But I'm self electing myself here as Chain's successor since he isn't around today. Feel free to overthrow me.

But when you see someone on here that you find interesting and want to know, how do you approach it? What is it that catches your eye here and makes you want to PM someone? Other than cock shots. That's obvious.

You can count on the fingers of one hand how many times I have taken the initiative to PM someone. Once for a very artistic avatar, a couple of times to sympathize with someone who took an unwarranted beating on the boards. Besides that, I can't think that I much undertake to meet new people via PM. Fortunately, nice and interesting people write me.

I actually don't PM all that much. If we've interacted on the boards and they seem cool then I might say hello. And of course if I already know them we might interact. But it's rare I PM people blindly.

It really depends on why I wasn't around. Usually me not being around is a sad thing. Not just for me, but for you lot as well. You know you miss me.

I have been gone for a month or so at times. I wouldn't come back after a layoff if I weren't looking to be entertained, so I would say happy. And your thread does miss your thoughtful musings when you are gone, although I thought pmann did a wonderful job pitch hitting.

Generally speaking, I like to engage people who express some degree of intelligent thought, who are generally kind in their interactions, and who possess a solid sense of their own sexuality. Thoughtful and intelligent posts are my trigger. And cockatars.

Nothing worse, in my opinion, than lack of effort. In Lit that can mean a variety if things but normally it's the cut & paste generic PM that probably wins the most votes for lack of effort. PMing is one of those things that you definitely get out of it what you put into it. So as a public service I'm going to list a few helpful tips at where to make the effort, no sense being misguided...

1. Be articulate, coming across as intelligent is always a bonus
2. Fill out your profile, give the recipient something interesting because they're going to go look
3. Find something that will catch their attention. Make them want to know more.
4. Post in the threads, somewhere. Once again, they're going to check and it's fun

One thing that gets my goat is when a discussion is going on about a specific topic and someone throws in their opinion without reading at least the surrounding posts. If it's just a general comment, no worries. But on the How To section, I see it often and the comment is often very opinionated and it's uneducated with regards to the thread in it's entirety. I'm not recommending reading the entire thread, but I at least read a little more than the previous post before you inject your strong opinion. Or at least give a disclaimer that you haven't read the whole thing.

Also, the following things are really lazy:

Ur for the word your or you're
Not knowing that these two words are different: then and than
Using the letter 4 for the word 4
Not knowing that is spelled "masturbation"

Good advice across the board so far this morning. I am usually amused - in my perception, at the high level, Lit is a site whose organizing principle is erotic writing. The ability to string together an intelligent sentence moves a long way in the right direction. Of course, it is also the internet, so there is that strong tendency toward semi-illiteracy. All of which makes it a fairly dynamic place.
