What's really so bad about alts? I mean, I get that if someone has an alt just to fuck with people, no one wants any part of that. But I can see the draw of an alt, especially for someone who's pretty visible here.

This question also brings up the missing Litster thread. Peeps declare who they miss, but yet I see the old persona posting about with their new names. I kind of feel bad for these people that felt close enough to miss them, but the new person didn't inform them who they now are.

That's probably the point though...wanting to escape their past life and people.

People don't always feel about you how you feel about them. It happens here as it does in real life, I would think.

Sometimes it would be nice if such things were possible in RL too. In days past is was, but now, with all the ways we are registered (and governments wants us too) it got a lot more difficult to make a fresh start.

I don't get the draw of alts either. If one is pretty visible here, so what? Flirt if you like, banter if you like, why not? Create an alt to flirt? As in not to make person A jealous if you flirt with person B? Or to keep ones GB personage separate from ones flirty side?

Being anonymous again, I suppose. Sometimes I imagine it would be nice to feel a little free-er in what I do and say here. That's not really a problem now, but a while back, I had a lit "friend" who would get jealous at the hint of me flirting with another Litster. Stupid, I know, and that's long since over, but I know he post stalked me and I just didn't want to give him any fodder or deal with his jealousy issues. I would never have posted the things I've posted on this thread if he was still around.

What if you're having an issue in a relationship with another Litster, and you want to talk about it on a thread, without him/her knowing? Again, that anonymity.

But, I can't imagine actually trying to maintain 2 (or more?) usernames here though. Hard enough to keep up with one.

I don't think you live in La La Land. I feel the same about these things. But I also know some Litsters are immune to talks and keep doing what they did, be it stalking or unwelcome comments or whatever. For example the "PM Asshattery" thread, some keep popping up and never learned a thing and I suppose a lot of the ladies do the same thing as I do: point out in a PM I am not interested and why I am not interested.

There are sooo many threads here though, it's easy to hide in plain sight. If the other person is homophobic, then it would be easy peasy to make up an alt, go hang out in the GLBT threads and discuss issues there.

In all seriousness, it's kind of easy to generically reduce the particulars down to nothing and discuss issues without the other person being aware. It also goes to how savvy a person is.

You could also say things like "for further details, PM me" which some people do...

There was a chatroom I used to belong to back in the late 90's, and one of the "games" I created was a play on how much people can recognize another person just from chatting. You had to make up an alt, you had to directly talk with as many people as possible within an hour. Just from commonly used syntax, you can mostly identify people's alt's.
There were other ways to notice too... watching log out/log in times, IP addresses, etc etc.

Of course, those people weren't writers who have to create personalities as a matter of course...

I guess, again, I just don't get out enough here to bother tracking people like that or paying that much attention... or indeed spotting the frauds. I would hope someone good Lit Samaritan would warn me against them if they saw something occurring though.....

Maybe you misunderstood. That was 15+ years ago. I couldn't care less what games someone wants to play nowadays. Passingly, you can't help but notice things, but spend time tracking people's movements and such? Worthless effort to be enacted by younger minds...

I already know people lie, I don't need proof of it.

My hunch is Alts of this nature will typically leave the thread and then come back at a later date with a new name.

The trouble most people who create alts make, is they tell the people they like, who they really are and eventually, that gets to someone who likes both people and the truth comes out.

Apparently the type of life you want as choosing an alt is a free will choice. I suspect each reason is unique and works for them.

I have some alts...when I register an alt, it's usually because I find the name funny. I tried to register NedRyerson, but someone already beat me to it.

One is known to some. I used it to troll Gracie when she first signed up. I pretended to be one of those guys and PM'd her, saying stuff like, "nice tits. Wanna fuck?" She was such a newbie that she'd answer me...rudely. I'd answer back with more sexual stuff. After every PM she'd tell me about this asshole who kept writing her. And I'd laugh about it. She even called him by a name ... Francis..."That fucking Francis keeps writing me...he's such an asshole." After a while, I fessed up. Now when some dickhead writes to her she asks if it's me.

Another alt I have I use for a singular purpose.
