*is having a very rough week*

Simple Question. For real tho, it’s not a facetious question:

How was your week?

Best/worst parts?
Anything you’d do different? Do again?
Any victories? Failures? Wins? Losses?
Fun surprises? Unexpected bonuses?

My week was exhausting. This school year has me crawling out of the building every single day.
Best part? I survived
Worst part? The weekend has to end at some point.
Victories? Ummmm....I wasn’t Zoom bombed.
Fun surprises? A couple of nice convos here on Lit. And some porn I watched.

I’m sorry you’re having a rough week :-/

Mine has been pretty nice. I’m adjusting to/struggling with/but enjoying the new routine. I got a haircut today for the first time in forever. Tomorrow I will see one of my best friends I haven’t seen in months for a socially distant drink.

I have a long week next week so I’m enjoying this one as much as I can.

Socially distant drinking. 😂

How was your week?

*sobs uncontrollably*

I'm all aboard the all experiences shape you train, but man alive. There were victories, though and what felt like a disaster for 4.5 days of work ended with a phone call from someone I felt I was failing all week to thank me for all my hard work. So that felt alright. I doubt I'd do anything different. Maybe drink less? It sucked, but it wasn't really avoidable. Felt like I was face down in the arena a lot, but all you can do is keep going, I guess.

Unexpected bonuses? I got a couple of messages from a couple of friends that made me smile and let me into their world a bit and that was cool.

I'm sorry your week was shit, I hope it gets better. Hard weeks blow.

Alright, fuck this sad bastard shit.
I’m getting sick of myself.
Yep, rough week.
Yep, life goes on.
Suck it buttercup n all that.
Let’s party.

It’s the most immaculate, perfect, unbeatable BBQ cookout spread your heart could desire. What’s on the menu? What makes the perfect backyard BBQ, for you? What item *cant be left out*? What item is overrated? What’s the thing that comes off the grill that you look forward to the most?

Oh! And condiments?!

If you are doing it right, a pig you started cooking the day before but that's a big ass BBQ and not your typical cookout.

What makes the perfect backyard BBQ, for you?

Good people, cold beer, good tunes, good food, no mosquitoes. I love hot dogs, brats, sausages, burgers, ribs, pretty much anything folks throw on a grill, I'll eat and enjoy. Give me some meat off the grill and some local corn on the cob and I'm a happy man.

What item *cant be left out*?

Hot dogs/brats/sausages. They're a staple of any BBQ and they don't cost much. I soaked some brats in Guinness for a few hours before tossing them on the grill. Delicious.

What item is overrated?

I'm gonna go potato salad. I'm just not a fan. That cold, mayo based dish is just a bacterial nightmare on a hot day.. could have gone baked beans here too (it's a texture thing for me)

What’s the thing that comes off the grill that you look forward to the most?

I'll go with ribs. When they are done well, they are such a treat. They aren't often part of a spread, so when they are, it's a treat.

Oh! And condiments?!
Ketchup
Mustard (have more than one variety please)
Hot sauce
BBQ sauce
Salt & pepper
Butter
Everything else is negotiable

Last thing: we don't call it a BBQ and they aren't cooked on the grill but the maryland equivalent is steaming and picking crabs. That rivals any BBQ. It's an event that can go on for hours that I will be partaking in a few hours from now. Can't wait.

I'm going to go with Bogeys answer today. Will add....

Pig roasts are grand. I've always hired out, but man, I would love to do one on my own.

Overrated. Also macaroni salad. Coleslaw. Ambrosia like salads. I enjoy them, along with potato salad, but am freaky about certain things, refrigeration being one. Listed because these seem to be the go to for my potluck BBQs.

Although, baked beans are a must. My grandmother would scold me from the grave if I ever left out her special recipe and let tradition fade.

My favorite. Chicken. Charred skin and slathered with barbecue sauce.

I'm currently at the lake and not doing a traditional BBQ this year. I've kind of spoiled myself over the years with large BBQs, enjoying the company of family and friends. Something took all the fun out of it for me this year.

My BBQ equivalent are clambakes when I'm in Maine visiting my dad. Love those!

I'm a sucker for ribs with KC BBQ sauce. If it's done right, some cornbread, smoked slaw, jalapeno mac and cheese, and a bourbon bacon apple crisp for dessert. I could be talked into brisket too, maybe a brisket sandy with a horseradish sauce. Fuck, maybe some pork carnitas tacos with a smoked salsa and avocado aioli.

God, I like food too much. But if it's me doing the Q, and I prefer too, KC ribs, hot chicken, slaw, mac and cheese, cornbread. It's an all day cooking affair, but I'm down with that. Anyone want to come?

I have never tried smoked slaw!!

I’ve got fingers crossed for a Bogey and QC block party.
There’s beer, right?!
Cut off jean shorts and a tank top.
I’ll bring the dessert.
See you in 15 mins.

Yes, yes. IPAs, cream ales, maybe even some sours.
I'm not sure that'll be that flattering on me, but alright. Oh, wait...

We should throw a few Stella in there for good measure.
Secret stash of bourbon too.

I can always change it up to a sun dress instead?
Minus the panties
😉

We can do that, certainly.

Oh, the alcohol sounds good, too. Always some bourbon with BBQ. Some Basil Hayden's and Buffalo Trace, certainly.

*banging my head against the wall hearing people call a cookout a barbecue. gggaaaaahhhh!*

My week was tinged in melancholy. I knew we'd be heading home after a summer at the lake, so I was trying to enjoy every moment without feeling bummed.

I hope your holiday weekend has helped remove the stain of your bad week.

I'm indifferent on the meat...hamburgers, hot dogs, grilled portabella mushrooms, steak, chicken, ribs, kielbasa...I am down with all of it. For me, it's all about the other stuff.

Must haves:
Chips and dips of any varietals... potato chips and onion dip, corn chips and fresh salsa, pita chips and hummus, etc.

Potato salad is a must. And for those concerned about spoiling, are you unaware of the concept of putting bowls of salads and dips and such on ice? I bought an inflatable serving tray that has a drain built in. You fill it with ice, place the cold dishes in there and as the ice melts, the water drains. And then you add more ice, if needed. It cost like $15.

Baked beans. Not the shit from a can. You can use that as a base, but add in cooked bacon, brown sugar, mustard, garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce and bake that down for a couple of hours and now we're talking.

Fresh corn - be it grilled on the cob or in a delicious corn salad.

Cucumber and onions in vinegar - essentially, lightly pickled cucumber. With a little sugar and fresh ground pepper. Shut your face.

7 Layer Salad - my mom's version is the best, but I can accept others.

Watermelon - sliced or cut up in chunks - served cold, cold, cold.

Other items I'd be happy to see...veggie tray, macaroni salad, deviled eggs, fruit salads.

You can keep your coleslaw though. That's disgusting.

As far as things other than food - a variety of drinks (alcoholic and non), endless amounts of ice, corn hole, horseshoes, comfy chairs, small amounts of explosives to set off when the sun goes down.

Oh, and music! A fantastic playlist crooning in the background.

Yes, Suz. I have a condition. :p

No. Srsly. About 11 years ago, I was rushed to the hospital. Food poisoning. Things got a little serious. Ended up being a lengthy stay. And it was extremely scary. Unfortunately, I've never been able to shake off that experience. I now have very weird habits and certain things irk me. It also makes me come off as a total food snob when I'm so not. There's a variety of things I'd like to make or try. I'm just simply not capable. 😒

Fuck my bbq, I'm going to Suz's.
Yours sounded delicious, too - but more along the lines of a football Saturday/autumn cookout. I'm still thinking summer, summer, summer. ;)

I totally get it if you've had a bad experience with food poisoning and being extra cautious. I was just saying there are modern miracles related to keeping food at the correct temperatures and to not throw out the delicious potato salad with the bathwater. :)
