I work in the “neighborhood” of what I wanted to be when I was a kid. I really only ever had one dream, one direction, one desire and it is something I have to do no matter what and in some capacity. I haven’t achieved it and probably never will—if I did what would I do next? But I will continue to pursuit it. It may be one of those “journey is the thing” careers, but what else is there to do? :)

Oops! Looks like Hotwords pre-answered my curiosity. :p

Let's see... I always wanted to be an artist as a kid. I'd tell that to adults and they'd pat me on the head and say, "That's nice sweetie, you can be an architect!"

And since I've always enjoyed sketching buildings and bridges and other structures, I thought, well maybe.

So my first semester of college I started out as an architecture major. I lasted six weeks. Too many right angles. As it would turn out, I much preferred the fuzzier lines of a piece of charcoal over vellum and exacto knives. And so many rectangles!

I do draw often as part of my work, nowadays, and have some creative sidegigs...

I'd never heard of Architectural Drafting or Architectural Design bachelor's degrees when I first went to college and had no interest in Architectural or Civil Engineering at that time. If I'd known about Architectural Landscape Engineering then I'd have been sorely tempted. But instead, I thought I wanted to major in music and be a band teacher. Then I found out that while I liked music doing that wasn't meant to be. I ended up in much more interesting endeavors and with a pretty cool degree later on down the road.

My other pmann story...

When I was five, pboy got taken to see a launch of the shuttle at NASA. I told my father that when I was 20 I wanted to work at NASA. Because, when you’re five, 20 seems really old. Anyway, through a really nice turn of events, I was able to go work for them about two months after my 20th birthday. It was a pleasure to work there, although some of it was very underwhelming. I do work there right after the Columbia tragedy. There was some very interesting and somber things I saw there.

^^My kiddo has been saying, ever since I took her to Kennedy Space Center, that she wants to work for NASA Mission Control...

My dream was to live in a quirky, funky apartment in NYC with eclectic neighbors and adorable idiosyncrasies. Think Corie from Barefoot in the Park meets Holly Golightly meets Mary Tyler Moore (I know she didn't live in NYC, but she had the great apartment and quirky neighbors).

I had not one idea of what I'd do for work because that didn't seem important. Based on what I had seen, anyone could work at a book store or a quaint corner shop and still afford to live in a "sketchy" apartment that could be transformed with cheery paint and only slightly used, discarded furniture found on the street.

For a small town/farming community girl, it seemed so frickin' glamorous.

I applied to a university in NY and was accepted, but the financial realities made it difficult/impossible for me to actually attend. And then after I finished school, there was student loan debt and some personal things that made moving to NYC seem out of reach.

I still kind of wish I had tried it.

Wants to follow in pmann’s footsteps, eh?

You are a wonderful mother for taking her there.

90% of my house is lightly used and discarded furniture found on the street. don't tell plan or he'll never come over. but my living room end tables are painted bubblegum pink (a la cheery paint), i bet he'd like those. they'd match his pants.

the kids call it upcycling now. how green of me!

Hmm...
This feels weird, lol.

But did you catch it when it released on Super 8?:D

*sigh* No. But I did see it on HBO when we finally got cable tv in the mid-80's.

I know, I know - you probably weren't even born yet.

I'm gonna go get my AARP card and go get some discounts on sensible shoes. :p ;)

I was born in the mid-80s. It dawned on me last week that I was born almost 9 months to the day after my father's birthday. It makes you wonder how he celebrated the big 3-1

It's not like I saw it in the theater when it was released. Fuckers. :p

Good grief... remember watching that movie on TV long, long after it had been released and banished to TCM purgatory... lol

And your not old Suz, your still a sex kitten...right???;):D
