So the place was down earlier and like many, I wandered off to other endeavors. Made me wonder , how long would Lit have to be down before this place became an after thought for you?

Mostly everyone I talk to here on a regular basis has another way to get in touch with me. As long as I could keep those connections I wouldn't be too concerned and might not look back if lit was down for a week or so.

Depends on the day or week. RL always comes first as my plate has a tendency of overfilling. Unexpectedly or planned, always persistent with keeping me on my toes.

I'd take a stab at a day before I noticed, but it depends on when it shut down. I usually sign in in the early morning and later afternoon. some days I sign in every hour, then I wont sign in for 2-3 days.

I was just thinking today "what would I do if Lit shut down?" and I almost instantly realized, "I'd have more free time to do things that really mattered!"

Do you ever stop to consider that on cloudy days that it's a sunny day above the clouds?

That win/win situations are extremely rare and for someone to win someone had to lose?

Or if you would be willing to pay more for your consumer goods if you knew that it would allow those making them a sustainable wage?

Sunday morning musings...

Sunday morning musings...

I'm too pale to enjoy truly sunny days, so a nice cloudy day is a play day for me.

In my mind, it's only a win/win if no one loses. Extremely rare indeed!

As for paying more, yes, I would be willing if it would truly help. However, I believe CEO's taking a pay cut could achieve the same goal. When you earn more than you could spend in a dozen lifetimes and your factory workers are below the poverty line, the cost of goods isn't really the issue.

I like rainy days. It means that the air is being cleaned, the plants are being watered, which in turn makes more oxygen for me to breathe, and less carbon dioxide which doesn't. The clouds can get sunburned for all I care, I like rain.

Some people have win/win scenarios, but they are extremely rich usually.

I am unwilling to pay more for consumer goods. that means someone else is trying to get rich, instead of willing to accept that they make only enough. It's called tightening the belt when times are bad, which it seems spoilt people rarely want to do.

Did you know that each countries monetary units are only as good as how much gold backs it? For every monetary unit someone uses on imported goods, there goes more gold out the door.

Now, in a perfect world, or a "win/win scenario," the country that exports to your country, imports an equal amount of your exports. As chainedup has already pointed out, it's rarely a win/win scenario. This means for each monetary unit you use to purchase imported goods, there goes the gold supporting it. So your government has to devalue it's monetary unit, which in turn means you have to use more monetary units to pay for something...

it's a vicious cycle that just keeps devaluing the monetary unit, and yet, people keep buying more and more imported goods.

Yes, I'm willing to pay a little more, but I don't feel the trickle down effect is very successful. Something is a bit whack in our market-driven priorities of capitalism. It's quite disheartening the greed that exists. I very much side with the socialist belief system.
Look at the happiest countries in the world, they're mostly northern nations. They've done a great thing not letting socialism cross the line into autocracy. Seems like a no brainer, yet we still struggle with it both on an individual level and on up as a country.

How do we provide for all while still giving people the incentive to go above and beyond and invent and create and be better. That becomes a problem the more socialist a system gets. Capitalism provides this incentive but not all of the protections that modern rich nations should provide for it's citizens. No country has found that perfect spot in the middle. I side more to the capitalist side (no, not pure unregulated capitalism), but we are far too rich not to take care of our citizens. Where is the right point???(Not expecting an answer, if the answer was easy it would have been figured out a along time ago).

As far as norther countries being happy and peaceful - I think 6 months of cold weather really causes people to chill the fuck out.

Very interesting question that has gone somewhat political. However, those in this thread who have answered have provided some very good insight and answers.

Socialism only seems to work in nations where there are few differing cultures and the populations are small, with wealth from some natural resource. The Scandinavian countries have done very well with their socialist societies. But they are incredibly strict on who they let in, their populations are small and they're rich with oil. Capitalism, while it has its drawbacks, provides the greatest innovation and progress known to man. Whether we like it or not, money is the driving force behind innovation. Once we take away the incentive to make money, the incentive to create is gone for investors. It's why you don't see as much innovation come from countries who are anti-capitalist. However, purely capitalist systems do not work well, because the environment and people suffer greatly. I find a generous mix of capitalism with some provision is the best mix. I do not lean to the socialist side of life in many (if any) manner. I prefer to do my charity by choice, not by threat of imprisonment.

I do think that companies need to be moral and ethical. However, I think we sometimes misunderstand what that means. I remember hearing a story on NPR some time ago that really got me thinking. It's sort of in line with the original question about paying more for goods that are made where the labour is paid "fairly". All this is a paraphrase, but I'll get my point across. There was a village in Brazil who provided fruit for a particular company. They picked it and sold it to this corporation and it's how they made the bulk of their money. Well, some do-golfers got word that this village used young children to pick their fruit. So, with good intentions, they bitched to the company and demanded they not use child labour. So what happens because of their good intentions? The company no longer does business with this village because of public outrage. They go and have their fruit somewhere else, driving up their prices. Well, the people rejoice because now the company is taking a hit and it serves those fuckers right. Except, what happened to the village? Their greatest source of income is shattered in the name of social justice. By trying to impose our sense of value on to another culture, all with good intentions, these do-gooders caused significant harm to both a company and this village.

There are companies with whom I wouldn't do business because of shitty labour practices (that are known to me). And I do pay more for certain products because they are made in America (shoes, for instance). However, that's more about quality than social ideals. But I do like the idea of supporting American companies. However, if we all stop buying from these companies who have overseas labour or whatever, we cripple those people who depend on that income.

I'm not against capitalism by any means, and understand wanting people to invest and wanting a better this or that. But plain and simple, not everyone is able for various reasons. And that's where compassion and ethics step in, or should step in.

Smiles, it's cold but I'd move to Denmark or Finland. ;)

You found them Matt, but you do.have the advantage of being there all of the time. That blue green also happens to be the eye color of someone who is supremely important to me.
Hugs and kisses Matt!

Rocking and rolling for a Monday morning.

What makes you break a secret? Will you take something to your grave no matter what or are there conditions that change that once closely guarded secret not so secret any longer.

Straight to the grave.

The only exception would be if the person themselves revealed the secret, then I would be relieved of the obligation of confidentiality. Oh, and I guess death absolves all oaths as well.

Secret secrets are no fun. Secret secrets hurt someone.

But actually, I am a good secret keeper. If a friend gives me one, I'll be hush hush. I expect my shit to be the same too!

I hate secrets. I can keep a secret, but the idea that someone has to pick me to be the confidant to confide in, sucks donkey dick. Someone asks me "can you keep a secret?" or "can I tell you a secret?" results in me looking at them with utter frankness and say, "nope, I can't!"

the only reason I'll unveil a secret told to me, is if the person does a total dick move.
For example, I had a friend who went out of his way to show how much he loves only his girlfriend. He wanted the world to know it.

Then the next thing you know, he is shacking up with another girl. See's me, and asks me to keep it secret from his girlfriend.

I'm legally obligated to keep secrets in many cases, so it's become an established practice of silence.
Plus, I secretly delight in knowing things others don't 😎

In case you hadn't noticed, it's a bit of a fee for all today. Or if you hadn't........

If you could start a tradition right now, what would it be? It could be seasonal around a holiday, or always taking holiday in the same location at the same time of year. It's a clean slate, tradition away..... and

One that we've kind of started, but seems to be cementing as a tradition this year... my family and a group of dear friends are renting a set of cottages near the Sleeping Bear Dunes for a week. I hope we keep doing it every year.

Memorial Day Swinger Weekend Orgy somewhere fancy but different every year. :D

My best mate and I go away on a totally heterosexual weekend together. It's usually just filled with us eating copious amounts of pizza and cupcakes and seeing a comedy show. We use the words tits a lot too. That should be a yearly thing, but due to schedules, it's sadly not. :(
