I think lit is probably held together by the first. We all estimate our place, status, popularity, whatever you want to call it, via things people tell us here. People tell us we're nice or funny or witty or pretty but unless they have met us they're all compliments based on an estimation.
Back handed compliments usually suck...sometimes I like them...especially if it's particularly hard for the person to deliver it because they don't really want to.
In the end, as long as I don't take credit for something someone else did...I'll go over estimation.

I would rather receive the honest over estimation. I could explain that I feel it is undeserved for whatever reason, but still show my appreciation for the kindness. A back handed compliment isn't really a compliment. It's just a way to dress up an insult. I don't need that kind of negativity.
