Literotica Contests

So, for you authors that have entered - not necessarily won - Lit. contests, did you find you gained anything out of it in terms of your writing? Higher quality of critique?

Is it worth the mudslinging that seems to go on? I've been reading previous contest-related threads, and it seems like there's a lot of 1-voting, authors (and alts) slamming other authors...

there's a lot more exposure - no pun - as a result of submitting to the contests. therefore the feedback tends to be a lot heavier.

of course, the side effect is that the trolls have, in the past, used the contest entries as a feeding ground, so their input goes up in proportion.

overall though, once the pointless feedback is put aside, the comments and suggestions that remain can be very useful. :)

The contests are great even with all the mudlinging. First you get usually posted one day after submission. There is a page up for a month where readers can go and read all the stories that were entered. So, a lot more reads, usually more comments and votes. For me it's just a fun ride.

Negative side could be some less favorable scores. If you're still not sure than try it once and find out for yourself. Hope you join us.

Quicker posting, more views, more votes, more comments, added "favoritist author" votes.

Any story I post that is not in a contest sinks into obscurity within a couple of days. It might take years, or never, to reach 10 votes.

Any story I post that IS in a contest gets votes, comments and feedback.

Even if some of the votes are 1s, a few of the comments are negative and some of the feedback is abusive, my contest story gets attention.

Write a Loving Wives story...you'll get lots of reads, lots of votes (1's mostly) and lots of comments (mostly from that guy Anon). ;)

Everyone's pretty much covered it. The reward is added exposure.

It used to be a lot more fun when people participated in the support threads, before the triad of ultimate ego sucked the life out of them by demonizing them.

That is definitely the case. I've even seen a story that were lost in the depth of time suddenly sprout an H. Yeah, entering contests is cool.

Contests draw attention to all your stories. When you get comments to the effect 'I really enjoyed this and I'm going to read the rest of your stories' it's gratifying. :D

Out of all the opinions offered, this really is the best one, in my opinion and the only reason to enter a contest. I've entered a tiny fraction of them here at Lit., in the end though I can say only The Survivor one did I find rewarding.

Well, thank you, everyone. I guess I'll give it a go, although probably not for the Earth Day Contest (I have no idea what I'd write for that). What's the next one after Earth Day?

I had fun writing about things I might not have written about had I not entered the contest that I did. I wrote a group sex Christmas contest submission, years back, and I'd never written groups before. Experience is always a gain to me and I had a good experience writing and with feedback. This being said, I don't recall getting a higher quality of critique from feedback, just a higher level of feedback.

MzDeviancy, you should check out the SDC (Story Discussion Circle) if you're looking to give and get more in-depth critique. :)

I defnitely put more time and effort into a story I was planning on entering into a contest. I wound up not putting it in the contest, but it was different writing for the hope of winning some money rather than just writing for the fuck of it.

Like I said, I wound up not entering the contest so I don't know about the mudslingling. It sounds funny though, looking from the outside that is. I imagine it wouldn't be funny from an inside view.
