A $350 MILLION payroll vs a $165 million payroll kinda dictated the outcome (I won’t even go into the Dodgers ONE BILLION dollar deferred salary shenanigans).

The All-Star team won…again…

That ^ is kinda why I have lost a good amount of interest in baseball.

I can’t even say I’m disappointed, - because I expected the outcome. And I’m actually happy it was a sweep, because it shines an even brighter light on the league’s fucked up salary rules.

Relieved that we get to fight another day, but tempering my expectation that we will win in Toronto. There was a collective "Here we go again" groan from the entire state watching the previous two games. Pulling off tonight's win bolstered a little hope. Not much, but some.

I don't know where I'd start if that was in front of me.

Well its been a rough fucking week for us brewer fans.

but we're a small market team that seems to never get this far, so whatever.

they kinda peaked midseason but kept winning enough to get the no. 1 seed.

i guess if we are counting total wins vs the dodgers for the year. its 6 to 4

see how next year goes. It'll be interesting to see if they actually put caps on the MLB like the NFL, it would make it more competitive.

i guess go blue jays or mariners.

dodgers were sooooo mid during the middle part of the year. I mean yes, ok, we didnt have snell, roki, ohtani pitching...treinen and tanner scott kept getting rolled out and kept blowing games...but it was very unsettling considering they have one of the best teams ever assembled on paper.

but sure if you want to count regular season wins as a moral victory, be my guest. hehe.

as far as salary caps go, i only partly agree with you. one thing never pointed out is that the dodgers spend more than basically anyone because yes, they can, but also because they want to...ie, instead of the owner lining his/her pockets, they put it back into the team.
also...yes they spent a ton on ohtani, tanner scott, yoshi...but before that...most players were traded to the dodgers and/or homegrown. so...blame other owners for trading players like mookie betts to the dodgers for good prospects etc instead of resigning those guys themselves or trading to other teams.
also...best teams on paper dont always win.
mariners and brewers are in "final four"...giants and padres usually spend a ton and didnt do much. yankees yes, cubs, bosox its never a guarantee.
and last year dodgers starters were all injured. ironically like much of this year.

theres a salary cap in basektball yet the lakers and spurs dominated the 2000s until the warriors dominated the 2010s.
a cap isnt always a sure thing fix-all

i would actually say certain teams did well DESPITE the non-cap

milwaukee isnt a "desirable" city for a star as opposed to LA/NY/SF/Texas/Florida etc...no major media, sponsorships type of things.
middle of the country, so not easy for say Japanese/Korean players to see family etc...
and yet you had the best record and made it to the final four.
and also, some of those cities dont have the "history" of say the Dodgers or Yankees...but I mean the Cardinals are one of the best teams ever. Thats not a big market city per se, at least not compared to LA/NY.

Ok Ill try to rephrase/elaborate:

Every team owner has the ability to spend as much as they want and/or can. There is nothing stopping the smaller market teams from spending money. They can make better offers to players. They dont. They pocket the money.
Dont get me wrong, I also know the "bigger name" players would likely prefer to be in a bigger market because of outsiode sponsorships and commercials and whatever. And dont get me wrong, I know some citiers/teams make way more money than others. The Dodgers supposedly earned the entirety of Shohei's 700m contract in his first season. Insane.

Anyway, this is also true with basketball and there is a cap. The perennial good teams are active and spend money, hire better coaches, and so on. When is the last time these teams were top 4 teams: The Kings. Pelicans. Hornets. Hawks. Blazers. Jazz. Wizards...they rarely are. Because they dont spend, they dont draft well usually, they dont hire good coaches, they are cheap owners in general. But yes, certain orgs are just more attractive based on history or outside opportunities or the culture of the city or whatever. I get that in general a player might prefer to be on the Lakers or Mavs or Sixers vs the Wizards or Jazz etc. But go out and spend and change history if you are invested. Look what Ballmer has done with the Clippers vs Donald Sterling. Make legit decent moves and try to win. The Thunder figured it out and that not a "desirable" place as compared to NY or Miami or LA.

But I also said that until two years ago, when the Dodgers had their run in 2017, 18 and 2020, they had a lot of homegrown players...they didnt go out and acquire big players by spending money per se...or not as much. They usually went and acquired one big pitcher. But Kershaw was homegrown, Walker Buehler was homegrown. Kenley Jansen was. Seager was homegrown. Bellinger was homegrown. And they have a terrific farm system so they trade lots of up and comers for bigger name players. They arent just acquiring free agents all over. And when they are, it goes to my first point...you want Ohtani or Blake Snell or someone? Make an offer. Toronto, San Diego etc were in the running for Ohtani, or Yamamoto. Corbin Burnes was a Brewer, then an Oriole and then chose the DBacks. Skubal is a Tiger. Skenes is a Pirate (for now). Pay to keep them. Or dont.

I love your thread kit and you’re a gem but on this we can disagree, the larger markets get way more tv revenue to spend so without a salary cap like football and even basketball (although it’s a bit skewed bc you can go into the luxury tax w money to spend) it’ll never be a level field for small market teams.
The smaller market owner like the brewers owners probably spend more of their own money to try and be competitive then the big market owners.

the Dodgers earned an estimated $752 million in local TV revenue, while the Brewers earned about $35 million.
That makes it hard to compete without some sort of salary cap

I don’t follow baseball as closely anymore living in Ireland. However, the luxury tax they have means there basically isn't one as the richer teams will happily pay the luxury tax.
Mark my words though, there's probably going to be a lockout soon as many owners want a salary cap. Could even lose a whole season because of it.

Qualifying was certainly interesting. Not sure if McLaren's pace difference between SQ3 and Q3 was due to the repairs made to both cars, or if the track changed that much in the 24 his between sessions. Would have been nice to see their sprint race pace though.
