I rewatch and rewatch:

Animal Crackers - 1930 Marx Bros;

Hollywood Romantic/screwball comedies from 1933-1936; (I just love it when they say "I'm fascinated" meaning "I'm in lust". I liked it when Clooney said it about Zeta Jones in Intolerable Cruelty, Cohn Bros homage to that era).

Every Fred and Ginger;

Fellini's "The White Sheikh." There'll probably be a dire remake of this 1946 comedy sometime soon.

My younger son loves LOTR and so do I.

Older son is into stuff like Matrix, Kill Bill. Too noisy and video gamey for me.

I always love American offbeat movies. I like spanking the monkey. Sorry, I like "Spanking The Monkey". American Splendour was really funny and clever. Kind of liked "Spellbound" (about the Spelling Bee) but thought people went a bit over the top in their praise.

Post-"Notting Hill" Brit romcoms and light drama at best raise a little chuckle. I really don't get excited over many brit movies.
But Mike Leigh has made some really great films.

I'll watch any shit, but only shit that I like.

Purdy's list was a good one, I too rather like those characters in films.

Also from Lou's list, Pulp fiction, Reservior dogs, well anything Tarentino or far out like that.

2001, Blade Runner, Dune, Fifth Element, 12 Monkeys, Black rain, Leon, and anything that makes the brain work.

Full Metal Jacket, and anything like that a bit violent but half believable and not violence for the sake of it, or how the yanks won every war.

Lock stock and Snatch because they were basically quite amusing if a bit silly in places.

Airplane, Hot Shots, and anything not meant to be believed that's far out enough.

Classic comedy and the like of Monty Python, or Dr Strangelove that you can vanish into and forget the woes of the world.

Some of the other older classics, 39 Steps, Third Man, etc.

Hell I'm easy to please really.

I knew you would have seen it! I loved it, it was crazy fun, the singing and dancing and all.

Have you ever seen "Lost and Delirious"? to see Piper Perabo in Coyote Ugle and then see her in this film is amazing. She is underestimated as an actress after her performance as Paulie.
I love the classics with Garbo, and Kate Hepburn.....how about "Stage Door'' or the "Major and the minor"? oh and "My friend Irma".....the original "Bad Seed" with Patty McCormick...Ninotchka was so wonderful.

I think I need a movie nite.......when I'm depressed I watch "Moonstruck"and quote along with it.
Steel Magnolia's ....Beaches.......sigh.

Did anyone see the one based on the life of Sylvia Plath yet? Want to know if it's worth the rent.

No, but I have a non-movie related side note on Sylvia Plath that's too bizarre and disturbing not to share.

On NPR today they were interviewing a neurologist who wrote a book about a mental disorder that causes the need to write (seems odd to classify as mental illness, but that's beside the point) and they got off on a tangent about Sylvia Plath. It seems some researcher had the dates of all of her menstrual cycles (I've no idea how or why & I REALLY don't want to know) and went through all of her work and decided that she had severe PMS based on what she wrote and when during her cycle she wrote it and published a whole paper on that.

This is why I never want to become famous.

Well I liked Amelie but you obviously can't watch it over and over again. But 'A la folie...pas du tout' was a great movie in my opinion. Really loved it.
8 women was alright. Liked the music in it.

Okay, two things. One, I really liked Pop's list, and am also "easy to please."

Two, for the U.S. audiences, "Leon" was released in the U.S. as "The Professional" and is a great flick. Um....Jean Reno, Gary Oldman and Natalie Portman I think.

I have seen so many great movies listed in this thread. I do alot of movie watching. In the last month alone, I've rented over $200 worth of movies on Blockbuster's Freedom Pass for movies. Great deal for the actual $30 I spent. As I said I enjoyed many of the films listed here, but I thought I'd add a few for ya.

Swimming with Sharks - A cool Kevin Spacey movie.
Grave of the Fireflies - A horribly sad anime film.
Glengary Glenross - Spacey again, but Ed Harris and Pacino were great.
The Passion of the Christ - I'm athiest, but this was a pretty intense movie.
Under the Tuscan Sun - Cute Diane Lane film.
Edward Scissorhands - I want Ryder so badly.
Arizona Dream - A crazy Depp and Lewis movie.
Big Blue - Jean Reno. Hard to find, but cool.
Super Troopers - Funny as hell. "License and regitration, CHICKEN FUCKER!"
Platoon - One of my all time favorites.
Cabin Boy - A silly, stupid Chris Elliot movie.
Warm Water Under a Red Bridge - Cute, weird Japanese movie.
Slums of Beverly Hills - Like my life now!

There're so many movies I love. There's a ton of foreign subtitled films I truly enjoyed, but can't remember the names.

Due to the way my peripatetic mind works, I can only give my own reactions to stuff posted here.

Tarantino, I've not seen Resevoir Dogs or Jackie Brown but I love those films of his I have seen. Especially Pulp Fiction.

Tatelou? I was beginning to think that I was the only person in the universe that liked that flick. Blade Runner is what I regard as the quintessential cyberpunk movie.

I loved Aliens, well Vasquez anyway. (Let's rock! Budda-budda-budda-budda-budda)
My kind of woman.

A couple of recommendations Lou.

Strange Days with Ralph Fiennes and Angela Bassett, directed by Kathryn Bigelow, was a pretty decent cyberpunk flick.

And Cast A Deadly Spell with Fred Ward, Julianne Moore, Clancy Brown and David Warner, is a lot of fun. Sort of a Who Framed Roger Rabbit? but instead of being about a hard-boiled detective in LA in the '40s where toons are real, it's about a hard-boiled detective in LA in the '40s where magic is real. This movie is a real hoot for horror fans.

Oh dear. My mind's wandering off again. TTFN.

Latest movies I've seen on the big screen were "The Last Samurai" and "Hidalgo".
"The Last Samurai" was good, but I admit to being more interested in my date after he surprisingly enough kissed me during the movie. So, sorry Mr Cruise, I found someone more interesting!
"Hidalgo" wasn't bad, but they could have done more with it. Not enough stuff happening.

I'll watch almost anything. Like action, thrillers, comedies, adventure and foreign movies too. Pretty much anything.

I love movies also, and my taste is very eclectic.

My all time favorite is Casablanca. It is like Shakespeare in that it is often quoted by people who don't know what they are quoting and that the quotes are often used completely out of context. Especially love that the one quote everyone thinks they know from that movie is not actually ever said in the movie.

I have yet to really get into anime, but it is an area I would like to explore.

Recommendations that have not been mentioned:

Spirited Away There was a reason this won the Oscar. A rare case of a gratifying upset.

Before Sunrise A wonderful movie that takes place in a single night. Great chemistry.

Road To Perdition Wonderful cinematography.

School of Rock surprisingly fun. I did not expect to enjoy it so much, despite already liking Jack Black.

There are so many more, but this will do for the moment. These are not necessarily in my "top ten" (except maybe Before Sunrise ) but none of them had been mentioned and all are worth a rental at minimum.

At the movies:
Big Fish - Tim Burton at his best.
Lost In Translation - Quite brilliant.

On dvd:
Dogville - Strange movie. I thought it would suck. It didn't.
Dogma - I'm a fan of Kevin Smith, even when he is in full sex-and-fart-joke mood.
Kopps - Swedish comedy masterpiece. The script has been bought by a major studio and a Hollywood version is alldgedly in production.
Adaptation - I think that I and Charlie Kaufman got our egoes at the same bargain bin.

It's pretty good. Not much below the belt, and not as sharp as Chasing Amy. He has actually made a nice family-friendly movie. But it still has the unmistakeable wit and slightly-more-eloquent-than-real-people dialouge that I like about his films.

I'm forced to watch comedies, even if I didn't like them, because of the taste of the two guys I live with.

Recently we saw Anger Management, which I thought was an unbearably silly film, but I ended getting sucked ihto it despite the fact that I thought it was so damn silly. There was one scene where Henry and I said simultaneously, "Nice backfist!" That being the scene, of course, where Adam Sandler executed a backfist.

Contact is one of the few grown-up SF movies ever made, so quite naturally, it never turns up on cable, which we have the whole free package because my husband works for Comcast, and before you ask, he can't tell you what's wrong with your cable; he's in internet support, and if your games are running slowly and you live in the right area, he might can help with that.
