I'm always amused that so few "get" the U.S. oil policy that has spanned several administrations, regardless of party. We want to use everyone else's oil and hold ours back so that when theirs is gone, we still have it. Let's take a moment and analyze this proposal. The US consumes approximately 18.5 million barrels of oil per day. Global consumption is 89 million barrels per day. Therefore, the US consumes over 20% of the world's oil every day. The US imports 45% of the oil it consumes. If the US were to suddenly stop buying all foreign oil, that would free up around 8.3 million barrels of oil per day for the rest of the world to consume. What would that do to the global oil market? The price would plummet, until OPEC stepped in and cut production. Meanwhile, economies in the rest of the world would enjoy an exponential boost as the price of energy dropped dramatically.

But here in the United States, the opposite would occur. With 45% less oil to consume, the cost of oil in the US would skyrocket. Sure, skyrocketing oil prices would increase drilling and result in an increased supply, but that supply would be priced at the new US market price, not the falling world price. The US economy would collapse.

Domestic oil production has increased every year since 2007. Has that resulted in lower energy costs? Obviously not. As much as the isolationists and flat Earthers hate to admit, the economy is global. Seceding from the world will not solve anything. It would only hasten the collapse of the US.

Increased oil production in the US does not reduce the cost of oil or gas to US consumers. It can only occur because the price of crude increases, making it possible to drill for more difficult and remote oil reserves. When the price dips, production will also dip. You can't drill for $110.00/barrel oil if the price is $90/barrel. Not unless you subsidize the oil companies, but that only means you are now paying for oil production with increased tax revenues, or by increasing the national debt. Welfare for the oil companies! Chew on that one, tea baggers.

This is why complex problems can't be solved with simple slogans. Someone has to work out the details.

My first suggestion is to do away with the health insurance companies in the healthcare plan and go to a single payer system where the doctors work for the government and the bills are paid by tax dollars.

This would cut all the profits that the middle men maKe at every level. Other countries have done this and it works.

You know we already have that...it's called Medicaid...let's just enroll everyone in that, and raise everyone's taxes 30% to pay for it all, and sit back while the government loses all that money, to all the low quality medical professionals who, double bill, bill for patients they have never seen, etc., while all the good doctors opt out and go on vacation or retire.

That should raise the quality of medical care for everyone.

Let me ask you a question. Lets say you are out for a walk and a man attacks you with a knife and threatens to cut your throat if you don't give him all your money. You are faced with a life or death situation so maybe you give him your money or you die.

Now lets say that you didn't give the man your money and he stabbed you in the chest and you're dying. They take you to the ER and the doctor says who's paying the bill. You have no insurance and the other guy took all your money. So the doctor says that he can't help you.

What is the difference between the doctor and the thief, one will cut you if you don't give him all you have and the other won't cut into you if you don't give him all the money you have?

Every ER has a person whose job is to find out who is paying before service is rendered, that is the real death panel and the only one you will ever have to face. If we had a national healthcare system you wouldn't have to worry about that person because everybody would know that the government would pay the bill.

I can't say what world you live in. I spent my early days in South Central Los Angeles. On more than one occasion I had a man with a knife (or club) try to rob me. I had no money and I black out during periods of violence. Typically I would return to consciousness with the criminal possibly injured and on the ground. I would take his knife (maybe his club), his watch, his wallet, check his shoes and then split the scene. The ass hole had no money and no salable chattels. The scumbags would then come, probably kiss him on the ass, and take him to a hospital. The hospital would patch together the criminal, presumably so that he could try to rob other people. The criminal had no money, no salable chattels on him and was mostly unconscious. Despite his condition, the hospital would provide him with medical services. But wait, you say, maybe the criminal has 12 to 16-year-old pussy at home. Unfortunately, the scumbags wouldn't let me sell the pussy and they were too busy pimpin' for they mama to sell that young stuff themselves. (They called me Whi' Boy, but my title was Willie Green.)

Did you even read your own links? "Death Panel" was simply the deliberately inflammatory label given to that part of the legislation by its opponents, who also argued that it would do things that the bill stipulated it wouldn't. More famously, Sarah Palin used that term to refer to end of life counseling provided for in some versions of the bill. If I recall correctly that plank was removed as well, in any case.
