This is going to attract an interesting crowd just by the title... And that's kind of the point.

Smut.

It's such an interesting and diverse word. It means something completely different to almost everyone, especially based around what we learn and don't. Today I learnt about early smut films and how they're going extinct because of a multiple of factors. It was a somber and rather delightful read.

Has anyone seen a 1920'sb smut film like the one referenced in this article?

No. I saw some 70s films with my husband at the time. I don't think either one of us were impressed. Smut or sex is what you make it. I lean towards romantic erotica. But given that this is an adult site, that category would be at end of the totem pole.

I enjoy them, but the cultural background and significance are a mystery to me. I learned more in that little article than I have in years poking around the 'net.

I think that smut was always in with the brave crowd. Even today many people will read stories here or somewhere else on the net and deny that they do. But, when you look at art from long ago, the carvings of Indian and Chinese temples you see it.
There are so many "smutty" object through history, but who has the balls to show them off?
There should be, if there isn't, a Wikipedia page that references all of that smutty art through the ages...

What a great idea for a thread

I have seen a bit from as far back as the 20s. Being a fan of Bettie Page I have seen a lot of stuff from the 50s. I think that's where my appreciation for stockings, garters and the like came from. After that, its kind of contemporary to me. I have seen old 60s era "loops" that clearly starred recognizable pornstars from the 70s like Candy Samples, John Holmes and Annie Sprinkle. (I think I remember one with Candy Samples AND John Holmes)

An inconvenient truth: Grandma was hot. Grandpa was a stud. If not, you wouldn't be here.

I don't think the content in the silent stag films from the 50s and 60s was much different from the Golden Age stuff. It's not like the blowjob was invented in 1972 or something. A lot of the loops I saw featured FFM and FMF scenes. Cunnilingus was always a part of them as well. The difference quickly became "recognizable stars" I think.
