My mom used to live in Texas when she was a kid and she was terrified of tornados. Her best friend's mom took her out on the front porch and sat her down to make her watch the funnel clouds touch down and dissipate. She explained that they would be safe. If they became dangerous they had a plan in place. It actually helped her.

I don't know if that would work or not, but it always fascinated me. Kind of like facing your fears head on.
