It can definitely be research. All my sons are diehard gamers. Two of them were inveterate hackers as teens and now have successful tech jobs. One put himself through college on the earnings of a video game he wrote and sold, learned to design molecule-sized microchips, and now runs his own software company. He succeeded in spite of me, because I used to come into his room at 2 a.m. and shut him down.
