Left 4 Dead (Closed)

I giggled at the thought of me being the best zombie killer, "Oh no, I couldn't be the best. It is a team effort, after all." I looked at the map once more. "I believe that we could clear out the most of them from the freeway. Some may be more issues that others. Some may not even come to the fort."

"You guys planning some type of getaway to a resort in here?" Bill said coming into the bridge.
"Oh no, just planning our final dock in the Keys, Bill," I said replying. "You think we could take on the zombies on the freeway while the ship stays off Little Duck Key?"
"Now, you know what I think, Zo," the old man said puffing on a cigarette. "With our bad ass selves, we could certainly take on anything thrown at us."

I laughed a bit. "Then it's settled. We're gonna do a four-man squad and take out the majority of them tonight."
"Well, I'll go tell them what's going on," Bill said waving as he walked out.

"We'll definitely do it this time, you know. We'll be safe at the fort," I said pulling Robert in for a kiss.

I kissed Zoey, it started off with a peck but slowly evolved into French style with my hands cupping her butt and hoisting her up a bit. Had to treat every moment as if it were your last, I thought. Had to keep things in perspective. Thus far we've been lucky, but even a simple mission such as this could not allow us to become complacent. Pulling back a bit I said, "You'll lead the team, i'll guide the ship. After you clear out the infected, try to build a barricade across the bridge to slow down anyone or anything else then head back and we'll send a motoboat to pick you guys up and take you back to the fort's dock. Once we'll land, we'll search the fort from top to bottom. I hope that it's empty".

It was a lot to hope for.

Bill headed to inform the others, "Listen up," he said loudly, "We have another mission."

Ellis leapt up, "Hell's bells, let's do it. Where we going?"

"A search and destroy mission" Bill smirked, "We're landing on a small island and clearing out the area of any infected as the boat heads for the fort."

"Sounds great!" Ellis smiled, "Let's kill all dem sons of bitches!"

"Now, no need getting in a big tough hurry. It's going to be just a four man squad. In 'n out," Bill said running his fingers through his whitened hair before replacing his military cap.

"Aw, damn. Sorry there, got a bit overexcited," Ellis said rubbing the back of his head.

"Yeah, guess the captain is going to let her pick her crew then, huh?" Nick said standing up from his seat to get a cup of coffee.

"Well, I hope she doesn't pick me. Don't want too much action now," Louis said, chuckling.

I returned the deep kiss as well. My tongue delved into his waiting mouth, dueling with his own. I gasped as he put me up onto the table, not moving from kissing me. It was quick but well needed. After the first part of today it was certainly welcomed. "Well I'm hoping the fort is empty as well, but not too empty. Hopefully there are supplies as well," I replied. I continued kissing him and put my hand behind the back of his head, pulling him deeper into the kiss. It was quickly becoming hot and I couldn't help but grow wet at the moment.

It was just the three of us. If the helmsmen did know what was going on behind him he didn't turn his head. I wanted some action, but knew best not to, not just yet. We had a lot ahead of us even as she gripped the back of my head, drawing me in, our tongues sliding down the back of each others' throats. It appears that Zoey didn't have a gag reflex. Who would have thought that it would be the end of the world before I could get a fine woman that actually wanted me? When we had to come up for air I said, "When we do land at the fort and secure it, we're getting our own room, well away from everyone else."

The Pigeon slowly moved closer to the fort and to our destination and drop off point. Along the way we could see what appeared to be the whole coast line of Florida alight. Bill and Louis were casually sitting on deck, their rifles on their lap watching it. Bill had his familiar scowl as a half spent cigarette was dangling from his bottom lip. They could feel the warmth coming from the fires.

"Bill, can I ask you something?" Louis asked turning his bald head towards his older companion.

"What is it?" Bill replied still keeping his steel eyes on the glowing horizon.

"You were in Vietnam, right?"

"Yeah" he nodded.

"Ever have anything like this happen to you?"

"You mean fighting fuckin' zombies?" Bill spat.

"Well" Louis shrugged his shoulders, "I mean, having to spend a lot of time on a boat."

"Ship" Bill corrected, "I spent a great deal of time with the Brown Water Navy in my time. Those damn boats were fast and packed more punch than this old tub boat," his lips cracking into a near smile at the nostalgia.

"Well, you ever thought about retiring to Florida?"

"No" Bill said, "Too many damn weirdos here" flicking his cigarette into the water.

"I can't wait to get into the Fort. You all to myself will be amazing. I had better go get ready. I'll be on deck in a little bit." I kissed him once again and walked away from the bridge. I went to my room and pulled my hair back tighter as to not give any zombies a chance to grab on. We would be taking on the search and destroy mission soon. I looked in the mirror and inhaled deeply. "Let's get this party started.." I said walking out to meet the rest of the guys.

The horizon was glowing like a lit torch, the smell of burning death was on the air. The waves were easy as we were coasting along the shore. I could not believe that this was continuing on. Everywhere was on fire and the world was just full of death right now. Perhaps there are other people out there further down the coast but right now, we have to focus on getting to Fort Jefferson.

I was startled with Francis came up behind me, "Are you ready to do this, Zo?" He handed me a gun.
"Absolutely. As soon as we get close enough, we're going on shore," I said taking it from him.

"Just the four of us right now and the rest will come along with the rest of the landing party," Bill said lighting another cigarette.
"Oh yeah! Let's get our asses ready," Louis said thrusting his fist in the air.

********************

Katelyn was starting to doze off when she decided to try the radio again. She skimmed through the stations picking up nothing but static. It wasn't until she faintly heard something. "This is the Pigeon Survivor Ship. Does anyone copy?" She gasped at the thought that there was someone in the Gulf that had survived. She picked up the receiver, "This is Warrant Officer Katelyn Hendricks, Coast Guard Station, Texas Coast. Come back?"

The helmsman heard the answer over the radio. "Damn, someone responded? But they're not here in Florida.. This is the Helmsman Jackson of the Pigeon! What is your position? Respond, over.."

Katelyn was so happy that there was someone. "Galveston Texas. Over," she said with happiness in her voice.

Jackson eagerly responded. Though not in the Florida Keys there was a survivor! "Understood, Galveston" taking a pen and paper and writing down the information then calling for the captain. This was big news. We couldn't go pick them up now, but perhaps once we get settled into our new place we would be able to. "Galveston, are there any others in your group?"

At the same time the Pigeon had swung around the fort. It was an imposing figure with its high brick walls, wide moat, and its large embrasures where the powerful cannons once were, if there were anyone in there they would have an easy target and blast us out of the water, but it was strangely silent. We didn't yell out to them out of fear that any infected would hear it and get riled up, but Jackson continued with the radio and stayed in touch with the warrant officer as the Pigeon reached a point about 500 yards north of the fort.

"This is where Zoey and her team will shove off from" I said while on the bridge, "Everyone else, prepare to land. We'll sweep the fort. Four will remain on the ship. Jackson, at the helm. Stay on the radio" Zoey's motor launch was being lowered into the water and rope ladders dropped to it.

I went to see them off. Francis was proud with his back straight, shotgun on his shoulder ready for the big hunt. He gave a quick hug to Rochelle as I hugged Zoey as well.

Katelyn listened to the person on the other end of the radio, "No. Sadly they've all turned and been destroyed." She stood doing a little jig on her own. Survivors. So she wasn't alone in the world. "Why are you guys in the Keys?" she asked, curious as to why they were there.

We were ready to disembark now. I was the first down the rope ladder, holding it steady while the other guys came down. "We'll radio in when we're done," I said up to Robert.

"Yeah! Let's get it on," Louis said dropping into the boat.
Francis was the last one to come down. He had stopped and held onto Rochelle a bit longer. "We'll see you at the fort soon enough. You just wait for me."
Rochelle patted the side of his face, "Certainly. I'll be there with a room...for just you and me, big boy."
He chuckled lightly before getting on the rope ladder.
"Seems like tough guy is in love," Bill said laughing.
"Oh shut up, old man," Francis said starting the motor on the boat.

With Zoey and them shoving off we watched them putter away in the launch before I issued the next order to land at the docks of the fort. Surveying it, there appeared to be no signs of traffic, no boats of any sorts, no boxes or lights on. The fort was still in great shape. Good thing it had been converted into a park for preservation, but there were no signs any of its big guns were left there. Damn.

We came in at 5 knots and slowed to a stop with sailors leaping off with their weapons and searching the place. Only one line was tied to prevent the Pigeon from sliding out with the currents, but the engine was left on idle should the need for an escape be necessary. When I landed I keyed my radio for Zoey, "How are you reading me?" as the first of the sailors advanced towards the fort. Their weapons were up, sweeping left and right. I hoped that there was no one left there otherwise we couldn't get them out of such a spot. It was getting dark fast. We had maybe a half hour or so before the sun disappeared to the west, but the eastern horizon was glowing.

Inside the Pigeon, Jackson was still on the radio. I gave him orders about what to say to people on the radio. Because we couldn't trust everyone now he wasn't allowed to give exact details. He did say, "We have a group and we're in the Florida Keys looking for a safe spot. Once we get set up we'll start looking for more survivors, like yourself. So far we haven't encountered many infected in this area, but Miami is ablazed. Is there a way that you can get to us?"

There was a footbridge spanning the moat to the gate. The bridge was down but the door was closed. Good. Taking a knee on the flat road we all scanned our sectors as two sailors sprinted across the bridge and reached the door. Looking it over they find that the door is not locked and push it open slowly but the metal hinges squeal. Stepping inside the interior was cold and silent. The all clear was given and we all advanced inside. "Zoey, we're entering the fort. So far...no contact" I whispered into my radio. What we found inside was not promising. There were black plastic trash bags stacked up by the front gate then a maintenance cart full of tools, discarded leather gloves, and the few trees in the courtyard were casting long shadows playing tricks on us as we spread out.

"Reading you loud and clear, Captain, over," I said back into the radio. "We'll be there soon enough." We were searching the cars left over on the bridge, knocking out a few of the zombies that were pinned in the vehicles and under them. It didn't take long before we found a vehicle that had gas cans in the back.

"Oh boy," Bill said. "That's a lot of gas. That could power some generators at the fort."

"Yeah, let's get them loaded up with each of us and make our way back to the launch," Francis said, grabbing two and swinging them over his back.

Louis and I took point taking out the remaining dead while we made our way back down the other side of the highway. We made it back to the launch boat and started getting in when a horde headed our way. "Hurry it up! I wanna get out to sea before they get here!" I shouted.

They started firing while I started up the motor. We made it away from the coast before they made it there. It seemed like the whole lot of them forgot about us. "Coming your way, Captain. Over."

Katelyn was still talking to Jackson. "Well, we used to be a hundred or so here. But then the infected started overrunning the place and we couldn't hold them back any longer. I had to shoot my commanding officer a few weeks back. Since then, I've been the lone survivor here." She thought about the idea of making it to Florida. "Ha, with the dead between here and there, not to mention Louisiana being full of them right now, I do not think I can make it. Only by boat, not by land."

Inside the fort we couldn't hear the racket that Zoey and company were making because of the thick mason walls. There was little to no light coming in and we only had a few flashlights on our weapons. We swept the lower floors, not wanting to go directly into the open courtyard and risk drawing fire from every direction.

Going up to the second floor via mason stairs I got this strange feeling that I was being watched. Looking down my rifle's sights I couldn't see anyone but my heart began to beat faster, my ears perked and then there was a flash and then a horrid crack as a round went above our heads.

"Contact front!" I shouted leaping to the side and hiding behind a half wall. Down a couple of casemates there was another flash. It was a bolt action rifle. We could tell by its slow fire. Four others joined me as we fired back with quick shots that spattered about the walls sending bits of brick spraying in every direction.

Jackson couldn't hear the fight until he heard our calls on the other radio. He keyed in and listened but still maintained contact with Katelyn, "What can you tell us about Texas or your surroundings? Any chance other places are holding out?"

Our blood was pumping and we were firing quickly. After two shots we had the target suppressed and one team advanced before a hand was raised.

"Hold your fire! Hold your fire!" a voice called out. "I'm coming out" a figure stepped out with both hands raised. We sensed a trap but waved him forward. All eyes fixated on him. If he tried anything he would turn him into a pincushion. The man shouted, "Listen, I'm sorry for shooting, but we're on edge. A few days ago a large boat came by full of pirates. They tried to take the fort and we thought they were coming back" turning about he ordered everyone else with him to lay down their weapons and to come out. "My name is Devin O'Halloran. I was...or am the janitor for this place. When the zombies came I was one of eight guys working in this place, you know, mowing the grass and taking out the garbage. I got a phone call from my bose in Miami who said to lock down the fort, but not long after a bunch of people came, some Cuban refugees, women and children and the like, even some military and police. Then some guys came with their hunting rifles and we held down this place until a few days ago. These pirates came a few days ago. They said that they were looking for a safe place, even used a sweet sounding woman to say it and when they landed they swarmed us. They took most of the women and all of the children and in the fighting most of the men were killed. Us 8 are all that is left. Everyone else is in the hospital. I fear that they will come back and finish us off. Can you please help us?"

"How many are you?" I asked.

"16 total"

We weren't pirates. We were trying to find a safe place. If this man was being honest, a trust that wasn't fully realized yet, then we might have made an ally. "Yes. We'll help you. Take us to your hospital". The man nodded and led the way as I called for Zoey, "Zoey. We've made contact with survivors. They're in a tight spot but they're friendly. Head back to us and we'll fill you in."

"Survivors? Let's hurry up and get back to them," I commanded them as I sped up the launch boat.
"Oh yeah! More people. Maybe even a girlfriend for Mr. Gruffington over here," Louis said holding onto the side.
"Nah, there's no one there for me, boy," Bill said taking a puff on the cigarette.
We had made a haul with finding the gasoline. Even though it was just a little bit, it was certainly needed.

"No, I can't say...we lost communication with the rest of the state early on. The Governor was one of the first to turn," Katelyn continued talking to Jackson. "What have you guys seen? By the sounds of it, the whole East Coast is alight, huh?" She was certainly happy that she had found them. "When daylight hits the coast in the morning, I'll go out and check the deck and tanks of some of the ships. I may be able to make it to New Orleans, that's as far as I think one of these ships holds right now."

"Well, hell. What he said, sir, is true. We're not pirates. Just survivors like you right now, mister," Ellis said stepping out from behind the wall.
"Yeah, what the kid said," Nick said.
"Devin? What did you find?" a woman of about 40 or so said coming down the stairs. She gasped at the sight of people. "Oh my! Caroline! Get more of the sheets and cots out, we've got guests!"
"Yes, mama!" a woman around Zoey's age said turning back around, to go get things ready.

Rochelle could sense that something was off about this group of survivors. It seemed like a cult to her. She and the guys had seen a few of those in Georgia after hell came to earth. "Be wary of them. We're not here for good," she nudged Nick, whispering in his ear.
He didn't say a word in response, just nodded.

The woman approached us with her hands held out, "Welcome! Welcome to Fort Jefferson" behind her the daughter was moving about taking cots from a small storage unit and moving them to a larger building. "It's been a while since we had guests. I mean, real guests not those blood thirsty pirates. Come. Sit. We have plenty of food and water. You people look surprisingly clean. You must have showers." When the daughter fumbled with the cots the turned and spat,
"Damn you! Clutz! Shift your ass!"

"Yes, mother"

Then she became all smiles. Not bad looking with clean clothes conforming to her body. The people had set up a good deal of extra facilities, but Rochelle kept looking about at the spectors about us and looking into the darkness. Nick knew and kept his eyes open as he casually walked about, simulating stretching his legs and arms. It's a trick he learned to look for the police by acting casual and scoping a place out before conducting an operation.

Rochelle then came up to me and placed a hand on my shoulder and tried to whisper something, but the woman saw this, "Now we don't go about hiding secrets. How did you get here? A ship?"

Ellis wanted to tell her everything but just as he opened his yap Nick came and 'accidently' stepped on his toe.

There were these people here, the caretaker and his men we engaged with then the woman and her daughter then there were a couple of others from the left and a couple of others from the right. They weren't armed but I realized that if this keeps up we're going to be outnumbered and surrounded so we had to buy time.

"Yes" I said, "We have a small boat. We're nearly out of fuel so we came to Jefferson after escaping from Miami"

"It is a hellstorm" the woman said.

"That it is" I replied at that moment there were a couple of more people stepping out of the darkness. Ellis was wide eyed. He stepped up and held on to his weapon tight. Our hears are climbing into our throats.

In the back of my mind there was a terrible scenario playing out. These people were weird. The woman seemed to be in control, the others followed and obeyed, the others hid in the shadows and watched us. It was eating us in the back of the head. What she didn't know was Zoey. I keyed my radio to Jackson, "Pigeon. Pigeon"

"Pigeon here. Go ahead, captain" Jackson said.

"Elderberries"

"Understood" To Katelyn he said, "Wait one" then flipped the radio to Zoey's personal frequency. "Zoey. Zoey. The captain just sent up the distress call. They're in a tight spot. No shots have been fired, but there is a group of survivors inside and he suspecting trouble. When you return to the ship, you and your team need to go in there and save them." It was a special callsign for trouble and Jackson knew immediately how to mount a rescue attempt.

"Okay, I'll hold," Katelyn said, feeling happier now than she had felt in a long time. She was finally able to speak with other people, not just badmouthing the targets on the Island. She felt resentment towards the dead, knowing that they were people she once knew and yet they weren't now. They had been taken from her and yet she couldn't have been happier. Perhaps it was the fact there were other survivors and she wasn't alone anymore that she felt this way. Fate -- was all that crossed her mind waiting for Jackson to come back on the line.

"Yes, we'll be right there, circling Little Duck now. Going to throw the gas cans up to you, be ready to catch them, Jackson.." I said lowering the motor as to not be heard. I wanted us to be a surprise to the others that were keeping Robert from getting back to the ship.

"Are they being kept there against their will?" Francis asked me, concerned because he knew Rochelle was there.
"I'm not sure. Let's just get there and scout out."

"So, nice place you have here," Ellis said, moving his foot around because Nick had just stepped on it.
"Yeah, we've got a nice place. Be even better if it weren't for the hordes coming almost daily," one man spoke. "About that boat now..."
"Uh, like the captain said, it's almost out of gas, that's why we're here," Nick said walking around behind Rochelle, never losing eye contact with a majority of the people.

"I see.. Well, right now, we may not be able to stay here much longer. There's a refinery along the northern coast from here. Think it could make it there, mate?" a guy with an Aussie accent said coming around the corner sharpening a machete.

We showed up outside and were hearing what was going on. "Louis, how good are your bird calls?"
"Pretty good, why?" he asked.
"Distraction."

We continued to keep our cool, but seeing the machete our alarm was peaked. "You guys have been here since the beginning?" I said still keeping a calm voice, "If we can find enough fuel we can refuel our boat and be able to reach this oil rig. From there we will be able to wait out this storm. A rig like that is resistant to most weather and we can fish for our food."

"Yeah!" Ellis said, "We might not be able to get catfish, but if we can some eels or some shark then I can make a mean stew"

"That sounds...appealing" Nick frowned. Trying not to start a fight, at least until Zoey gets here, we kept our weapons held low and casually, but I kept the safety off and one round was still in the chamber.

Rochelle was counting all of the people slowly surrounding us, some of them didn't have weapons, but the machete wielding Aussie had her attention.

"So" I said, "You thinking about joining us?" I said towards the woman, "We could use your help." The woman didn't seem to be incited into joining. She was suspicious, looking at us all over, questioning our motives, but she kept her distance. Her daughter had moved the cots and came back, standing to the right rear of her mother with her hands together on her lap as if waiting for the next order with her head slightly hung low, being sub to her mother.

She pondered this as her daughter continued to work. Jackson got back on the radio with Katelyn, but said nothing of the danger we were facing. "How many more days of supplies do you have?" he asked. "If worse comes to worse, we might be able to come get you..."

"Yeah we have a majority of the supplies still here. The A&P is still stocked with good supplies because I've been the only one here for a while now," Katelyn said. She could tell by the tone in Jackson's voice that something was wrong. He had changed his mind pretty fast about coming to her. "What is wrong, I wonder?" she thought to herself.

"Well, we really couldn't leave. Devin has been the one to protect us and right now we're pretty comfortable here," the mother said. "Come Allisyn, let's go.." she said to her daughter.
The daughter was feeling a bit confused. There was a better chance here before them for a life, to survive the dead attacking. "Come now, Allisyn! You hear me?!" the woman yelled grabbing her arm.
The daughter pulled back and stepped away from her mother, "Not this time, Caroline! I'm going to go with them!" The daughter moved over by the guys, only to be stopped midway by Devin. "Listen here, you little bitch! You are not going to go anywhere!"
"Let go of me!" Allisyn started screaming out.
"Come on now, Allisyn, don't be this way!" Caroline said trying to pull on her daughter.

"Listen here you don't need to be so forceful. Let her go with us," Ellis said, before being pushed back by the guy forcing the machete at him.

*bird calls* "What the hell is that?" Devin said, loosening his grip on the daughter at this point, making her fall backwards.

"Get out of here, we'll cover your ass!" I said screaming out, taking aim at some of the people, missing the mother and daughter on purpose. Robert had to have his reasons for wanting these two.

Now we were in a fire fight with the people here.
"Come on now, let's go," Ellis said taking hold of Allisyn, who followed him willingly.
"Let go of my daught---ack!" Caroline said before being knocked out by Bill.
"Time for you to come with us, little lady," he said picking her up over his shoulder.

"Fall back to the ship!" I said before keying the radio, "Jackson, get ready to shove off. We're going to hot foot it out of here"

"Aye aye, captain" Jackson replied.

With the woman draped over his left shoulder, Bill spun about with his M-16 in his right hand he fired at the dark masses. "Let's move it people"

The man with the machete lunged for Ellis and Caroline. The girl shrieked as Ellis hunched at the knees and swung up with the stock of his rifle connecting with the man's jaw and knocking him back. Impressed himself that it actually worked Ellis stood for a moment looking down at the unconscious man before Caroline grabbed his hands and pulled him away.

We ran for the front gate. Rounds pecked all around us as people were shooting. More muzzle flashes were seen up on the higher levels of the fort. Damn. There were more people hiding there. "Get to the ship!" I called out.

On the bridge Jackson ordered the lines be removed, "I'm going to have to call you back" he said to Katelyn, "We have an event here" and left the radio to grab the wheel of the ship. To his right he could see us running across the moat bridge firing as we did as people began to appear on the upper levels of the fort. If only we had the Pigeon's old guns we could have blasted them off those levels. Rounds pecked around us. They weren't good shots.

"C'mon, miss" Ellis called out as he ran dragging Caroline. For an old geezer Bill was hauling faster than the boy was as the Pigeon began to slowly slid backwards in the dock then came the smack on metal was rounds were hitting the ship as well.

I used the radio to call Zoey, "Zoey, get your team out. Fall back to the ship!"

"Let's hurry up and book it team!" I said screaming falling back with the rest of the guys, guns ablaze as we continued our trek getting the hell out of there. We couldn't hold them back too much, we were taking too much fire. The bullets from the people at the fort were ricocheting off of the hull of the ship. We weren't only having to dodge the shots from behind, but the shots bouncing back at us from the front.

"Let's hurry up! C'mon babe!" Francis said running up to Rochelle and grabbing her to jump on the ship.

"What's going on there?!" Katelyn said hearing the sounds coming over the radio Jackson had left on.

"Let's hurry up and get the fuck out of here!" Louis said running and being the last one onto the deck.

"You're my savior," Allisyn said to Ellis.

"Oh shucks, it's nothing miss," he said to her.

Allisyn's mother was coming to in the galley with Bill standing before her, "What in the fucking hell?!"

"Now, Caroline, that's no mouth for a lady," the old man said to her putting out his cigarette and starting another one.

"Are those Marlboros? I haven't had one of those in forever," she asked.

He handed her one and lit it up with the end of his own.

I reached the bridge and ordered Jackson, "We're pulling out of here. The fort is being held in strength. We can't fight them" just then another bullet smacked the hatch to the bridge sending a shower of sparks.

Easing out of there we went north to get into deeper water. All the while we were under fire and our sailors continued to trade shots with those in the fort as everyone else went below decks for safety. When we had pulled well out of range we hovered there while I ordered a headcount and summoned our two new guests up for an interview. I wanted to know as much about them and those other people as possible. If we can gain an edge then we might be able to try again and take the fort.

Jackson went to the radio, "I'm back. We had an incident with some people. We're alright. No casualties and no damage" he was down playing it but he was shaking as a leaf that he had to sit down.

When I saw Zoey I gave her a tight hug, "That was too close," I said to her, "Good thing you were able to give us cover" as the guests were brought up. Allisyn clung to Ellis, fearful that she would be lost without him. Behind them Francis had one arm around Rochelle as she nuzzled up against his hard chest.

I looked at Caroline as she was puffing lightly on a Maraboloro and right behind her was Bill. "Okay" I said, "Now that we can properly be introduced, i'm the captain of this ship and you're here as my guest. Now, I want to know everything you know about the people of that fort" pointing towards the dark mass on the horizon in the moonless night, "I want to know who is running it."

"Better not hold back, ladies" Francis, "Captain means business. If we find out you're holding back, it's sleeping with the fishes for you"

Katelyn freaked and pressed her face into Ellis' shoulder, "Now. Now, miss" he assured her, "He's only playing" before giving the biker a stern leer.

Francis felt the glare from Ellis, as if it was burning through him like a torch. "A'ight, I'll shut up now.." he said walking over to Rochelle, dragging her down the corridor to go do some dirty business.

"It really was close, my love," I said to Robert, holding onto him, my head resting on his chest. I heard him ask the two women about the people at the fort.

"Go ahead and answer him sweetie," Ellis said pulling Allisyn around to look into her face.
"I wasn't really told that much considering how I was treated," she started to speak. "But I know that the leader, Devin, was once an elite soldier and that's why they had so many guns. They stole them from Gitmo in Cuba before they found us in Miami on the way to the fort. They...they did things to people.."

"I fucking swear Allisyn, you had better shut the fuck up. That's not your right to speak," Caroline said before Bill handed her another cigarette, which shut her up.

Allisyn was quite dirty whereas her mother Caroline was clean. "They didn't treat you right there, huh?" Ellis asked.

She looked down from the young man's eyes and nodded slowly. Ellis picked up her chin with his hand, "No need to be sad now, miss..You're safe. And I believe Miss Zoey can help you get a nice shower."

The girl's eyes perked up when she looked over at me. "Really?"

"Sure. I'll even help you pick out clothes, come along now.." I said leaving to take her to the showers.

"You sure are a pro at smoking, huh?" Bill said sitting next to Caroline.
"Not that I'm a pro, just haven't had a smoke in a long time. This dead walking the earth and eating people business is sure stressful and sex can only do so much," the woman said in reply to him.
"Heh, I get what you mean. Not the sex part, haven't had any of that in a few years now. Well, since the last time I was at a titty bar," the old man said gruffly.
"I went to Chip'n'dales before this hell went down, most were already turned. Oh well," Caroline said taking a drag off the cigarette before putting it out.

"Seems like you guys will be here by mid-morning, huh?" Katelyn said to Jackson on the other line. "I guess I had better get dinner ready," she said with a laugh in her voice. "Are you allowed to leave the shore and come in to see me, or do I have to come see you, mighty helmsman Jackson?"

Going down below Allisyn and Ellis went to the shower where Zoey had clean clothes at the ready, "You're dirty. You're like the time me and my buddy Keith went to the hog pen to go get some pigs for the Thanksgiving dinner. He and I jumped into the pen and tried to hogtie this one little pig but then it's mother came charging at Keith and he went running around the pen and got knocked into the mud..."

"Ellis," Zoey said, "Ellis?" The boy came to a stop with his story before he had finished.

"Oh sorry" he replied.

She needed to get cleaned, but the girl seemed reluctant to be alone. "Will you be out here for me when I get out?" she asked Ellis.

"Sure I will" Ellis smiled.

"Thank you" taking a few clothes from Zoey and hoped that they would fit, and prepared to go into the shower before she stood and looked back, "Devin and his people...they did horrible things. I saw one girl soldiers. They came in the fort and Devin had them beaten and then he used them for his sex and then when they tried to run away he had them shot."

"That's horrible" Ellis said.

"He picked me and Caroline and a few others because he said that were pretty and strong."

"Well, miss, you don't have to worry about them anymore" Ellis assured her.

On the bridge I continued looking at Fort Jefferson. We needed to take the fort, but if what Caroline told us were true, that Devin had the training and the equipment then he held most of the cards. Damn. I wish the Pigeon had her old guns. It didn't appear that we were going to take it. Damn. Going to the charts I pulled out a map of the Gulf Coast and began doing some more calculations. We still had full bunkers and supplies.

"Katelyn is Galveston, yes?" I said to Jackson.

"Aye, sir" he replied.

"We're going to set a course for her. Tell her to keep transmitting and we'll use the radio finder and home in on that.

Jackson was on the radio still. "Captain has changed our orders. We're heading your way. Keep your radio on and we'll home in on it" he said eagerly.

"Oh joy! I'll keep it on, but you have to keep talking to me for it to signal out. It's one of those secret ones," Katelyn said. She got up and jumped around for a moment, before straightening herself out. People. Actual people. Coming for her. Coming to her. There was a build up of joy and excitement in her. "You'll have to circle around the island and make your way into the Galveston Bay to make it to me. That's the only way to this outpost," she said to Jackson on the radio.

"I can stay in here, if you wish," I said to Allisyn. "I can't imagine what you have seen. We're about the same age, huh?"

"Yeah, I suppose so," the young girl said turning around in the shower to let it hit her back. The dirt and filth washed off of her, letting her hair down so it could be washed. "I just saw so much and was used so much. Mostly..." she paused. "By my mother."

"I see. Well, you don't have to worry about it. I think Bill is going to handle her just fine. Seems they have found a common interest.."

"Yes," Allisyn said laughing. "She's quite the smoker."

"How's she doing?" Louis asked Ellis as he stood up.

"Well, I think she's going to be doing just fine, man. It's just been a tough time on her," the country boy said in response.

"Oh god, you are such a good fucker, Frank," Rochelle said laying over off of Francis..

"I don't usually let people call me Frank, but you, I'll make the exception. Just in the bedroom okay, honeybuns," Francis said turning over to give her a kiss.

It was hardly a bedroom to begin with but Rochelle smiled and kissed him all the same. When he had shot his load into her she arched her back and sighed before collapsing beside her, one arm draped over his chest. "Why do you like vests so much?" Rochelle asked.

"Just do" he replied, "this one was given to me when I joined my brothers and I had it ever since."

Rochelle wanted to ask where they all were, but knew the real answer to that and decided not to go any further.

As Allisyn talked to Zoey she trembled. This was how Devin got her the first time, in the shower where she thought she was safe. She kept looking at voice, giving a nervous smile as she lathered up the soap and washed off her skin. "Is, uh, you and the captain, like dating...?" she asked.

On the bridge Jackson relayed the information to me as I pulled up the map on Galveston. "Ask her if there are any sunken ships or any underwater obstacles we need to know about" I said to him while plotting a course she recommended. If that city was overrun then there had to be an exodus of ships and people trying to get out. If any of them sank there then we might strike them. "When we get to Galveston we'll need to refuel. Have her check any fuel source to see if she had any diesel."

"Aye, captain" Jackson responded then piped those requests to his new companion then added, "What kind of uniform do you guys have in the Coast Guard?" The more he spoke to her, the more about her he wanted to know. She had a soft voice, showing maturity but she also had a sting of fear from being alone for so long.

"There are certainly tanker ships and offshore about 20 nautical miles out there is an oil refinery. Southeast Texas has it all, hon," Katelyn said, responding to Jackson. "There's no ship wreckage, probably just offshore from the ships catching fire, but they're visible and easily avoidable." The sun was just coming up over the east end and she could look out with the binoculars now. "Not many zombies except near the west end, you have no worries. We have um.." she paused hearing him ask about the uniforms. "We have blue fatigues, blue um...camo fatigues. Common uniform here."

"Yeah um...You could say that," I replied to Allisyn. "Everything happened so fast. He and his crew saved us back on the east coast, just out of Phili. One thing led to another and we were um...yeah we're a couple.." I said still nervous about explaining it.

"You want to go get a shower, Caroline?" Bill asked the woman before standing to get another cup of coffee.
"No, I believe that I can handle things right now. Is there a place where you and I can be..well...alone?" Caroline asked the gruff military man, which brought blush to the man's face.
"Um...sure..Follow behind."

"Bill and Caroline, sitting in a tree...f-u-c-k-i-n-g! Ha ha ha!" Louis said shouting the chant at the two heading down the corridor.

Ellis soon chimed in, "First comes ooh then comes ahh, then everything just becomes blah!"

As the two sang, Bill picked up a piece of wood that was sitting beside the hatchway from our construction time and hurled it down the corridor. Louis saw it coming and leaned away but Ellis continued singing and the block connected with his forehead and knocked him back. "Oh, man!" he yelped in pain, "That hurt!" rubbing the large red spot. All Louis could do was chuckle.

We continued on our course following the beacon. The seas were calm as the sun came up. It would take us several more hours to reach Galveston and as we left Jefferson behind I felt the need some sleep and I needed Zoey and she was down below. "Jackson, you have the conn. Keep her talking"

"Aye, captain"

Having talked for hours he wondered what else they could actually talk about, "You married?" he asked knowing it didn't really matter right now.

Below Allisyn had finished her shower and felt a million times better having rinsed all the funk off of her body and scrubbed her insides. "I haven't showered in a week or so, it seems. Too scared to, you know. With Devin and them" as she went to dry off and clothe herself.

"I understand," I said to Allisyn. "It's completely understandable. I'm sure once you're done with your shower, you could use some sleep. When you're done getting dressed, I'll have Ellis waiting for you to lead you to your own private bunk."

"Th-thank you," Allisyn said turning the water off to step out.

"Yo, Ellis!" I said shouting down the corridor. "Need you to come down here and wait outside the door. Do not look in until she comes out to you. She'll need a guide to her bunk."

"Yes ma'am!" he said shouting back rubbing some ice over the whelp that Bill had caused on his forehead. Louis was now holding his sides from the laughing he had endured. "That old man has more moves than you, buddy boy," Louis said to Ellis on his way to his bunk.

I headed out to go see Robert. I met up with him in the corridor. "Going to bed, even if only for a little while?" I asked him holding on to his side.

"No, I'm not married. Never had the time," Katelyn said in response. "How about yourself? Got a little thing or anyone special to ya?" She was having the time of her life, talking to a guy. It reminded her of the times she was still in High School -- sitting on her bed, talking to her boyfriends or friends all night.
