Hmm... I'm not sure #2 is just used in that context. I think it can be a less enthusiastic inquisitve as well. But that's just the way I use it, per chance

I haven't hmmmed in pleasure on IM yet. I think I'd leave the h out of hmmm in pleasure...
A hmmpf is a hmmpf. Or a humph. It can never be a hmmm. A hmmpf is too low for a hmmm.
That just leaves a hmmm with three Ms.

And a hmmm is much more than an inquisitive noise. It's also a 'I hear you'. It's also, 'okay, fine, but I better keep my mouth shut because you don't want to hear what I have to tell you'. A hmmm might also be 'I'm doing something else and am only half here'. And so many other things.
