Learning how to learn

I've heard this phrase used a number of times in the last few months. What does it mean to you? Why do you need to learn how to learn? Aren't we all capable of this?

Of course. But from what I understand, there are usually more efficient ways for people to learn things.

An example....I am virtually illiterate when it comes to math. For some reason, I just never got the hang of it in school. However, I now know that if I had someone who was able to teach it in a way that I could understand better, I probably would be able to learn much more.

Does that make sense? Or did I just confuse you? lol

To myself it means that sometimes as we get older we forget that we still have so much to learn.

That we need to learn how to learn again.



Bta I'm tired and likely just talking dribble. :)

You've twisted my question around I think. In your case you want the teacher to adapt to you but in the instances that I ran into, the pupil needed to adapt to being able to learn. But I guess you are correct in a way, because the teacher had to break them of their old habits of learning, before they could "learn properly".

And just how am I supposed to concentrate with those pulsating lips beckoning at me?

Ok. Another way to look at it, which is probably more along the lines of what you mean....

kind of like I said earlier, you can pick up better, more efficient ways of learning things. I think I've heard it said that people can train themselves to "learn" better. Dang. I KNOW what I'm trying to say, I just can't put it into words.

You "learn" how to learn. I'm sorry, hon. I guess I need to "learn" how to explain things!

There are four phases of developement:
  1. Unconscious incompetence
  2. Conscious incompetence
  3. Conscious competence
  4. unconscious competence

To me learning to learn means recognising that you don't know first, because untill you admit that you aren't capable of learning.

sorry...my poor brain got so tangled up trying to figure out how to explain what I was trying to say that I totally forgot to address the problem that the pulsating lips are causing you.

The answer to that is, you must LEARN to focus your attention on the material which you are studying. LOL!

I'd like to try a serious response, PR

I've read several books and had some training in "learning techniques" (now i just wondering why they didn't help :D).

They all told me something about "Speed reading" "Visualizing" "Memorization" and my different input-channels (vision, hearing, kinesthesia, somatic, chemical), even my biorhythm has something to do with my ability to learn.
And then there was NLP and Anthony Robbins.

Anyway... out of all that I took at least one thing: It's wasting time when you learn the wrong way. Matter of effectivity and efficiency.
 
To me, this phrase means opening your mind to new things. I think that part of learning comes with having the knowledge to open yourself to whatever you're not sure about.

When you are able to do that, you are learning how to learn. I may be so very off in my way of thinking, but this is what it means to me.
 
Try teaching someone how to think and learn. Metacognition is partly the ability to understand what you know, don't know, and how you learn something new. My students this year have 0 metacognitive ability. They think that adults know how to read because they always have and that correct answers are just "there".



Before you can learn how to learn, you have to realize that people do learn.

I do hope you aren't implying that my responses were not serious. I was deadly serious....I just have a hard time getting things from my brain to my mouth...or in this case, my fingers.

And yes, before you or anyone else says it, I am a bit touchy today.

I'm not so sure that BD twisted your question around. Everyone learns diffeerently. "Learning to Learn" involves learning what tricks and techniques work best for you.

For example, I remember almost everything I read, but forget nerly everything I write down -- almost as if writing something down "moves the information to permanent storage" so It doesn't need to clutter up my mind. You can also forget about lecturing me on a subject -- verbal presentations go in one ear and out the other.

I've learned over the years, how my mind accepts information and learned to compensate for it's failings in situations where information is presented in a way that is difficult for me to learn from.

Perhaps if BD had a math teacher that understood the learning process better, she might have learned what it takes for her to learn math and related subjects.
