Laurel? Manu? Anybody? What's wrong with member pages??

The other day I couldn't find a particular member's page. So I thought somehow that member just didn't have one (although I think you get one when you register).

I didn't think any more about it until today I noticed the kewl penguin in my sigline is missing. It is located on my Shy Tall Guy member page. Problem is, I can't find my Shy Tall Guy member page, even though my STG ID still exists.

I get the same error I got when I tried to find the other member's page:

I am trying - but something is wrong with the Lit. member pages!

I'd say that certain features that make the db more vulnerable have been systematically turned off over the past few months...but you know what would happen if I did:

*wierd harold would explain it's a hard drive or clock error on a server;

*muffin would post about my evil conspiracy to ruin the board and my disrespect for laurel to say such a thing;

*ishmael would insinuate I'm part of a band of hackers intent on abusing women's hard drives;

* tulip would post that it's evidence of my harem of married women's PM's clogging the internet.

So, I won't suggest that perhaps certain search functions have been turned off to keep the site's sql db safe and the main portion of the site operational without the frequent downtime of the previous months.

Note that the UserID for the BB and the UID for the site are the same.

For those having trouble with the site search function, you can find an author's UserID withthe BB search and insert into the memberpage.php URL and find the author's memberpage that way.

I don't know why member's pages are intermittently disappearing and/or losing all of the story and poetry links when they don't just disappear. I do know there have been intermittent problems with the nightly regeneration of author's pages to update the story links -- the problems are usually corrected the next time the stories are updated or when Laurel or Manu is made aware that there is a problem.

Your penguin shows up for me, but that might be because it's in the temp internet files and my browser doesn't go looking for it beyond that.

But I do know what the problem is -- The script that runs to update the story links is crashing. I just don't know which of the thousand-plus reasons a script can crash is relevant to this problem.

I remember weeks ago on a thread where it was brought to several of our attention that Lit makes most of its money from the story section and chat site. Do you think somebody is fiddling with it on purpose?

Just a crazy thought here but stranger things have happened.

I don't think the revenue comes from the stories and chat.

I think it more likely comes from clicks through off the links page, the front page and any affiliated sites owned by Lit's owners that charge membership fees.

That's the standard model for porn sites.

you read into that. There can be thousands of people everyday that read these boards. I did not direct it to anybody. I was just asking could it be possible that perhaps a person is attempting to after they learned that lit makes it money from the story section. Interpret the way you will. I am sure others will too. Again hypothetical and not directed that I see to anybody who posted in this thread as of yet.

True it was one of Lance's thread it was mentioned about how many people visit the story sections. This place is endless with the amount of sections and sub sections it has. I believe it is the banners and the sites it advertise. All in the advertisements and clicks of others. Something like that.
