Laptops?

I have a Toshiba Satalite that I've had for about 5+ years now. It gets moved around, bumped around, cookie crumbs, run off the power inverter in my car, and so far it's been absolutly flawless. I can definitly say it's the best computer I've ever owned. It's a Pentium 4, 2.4ghz and was the fastest kid on the street when I bought it . Not cheap, I probablly paid about $2500 for it at the time but it's been worth it. The only issue I find with it is the the processor runs VERY hot. It has 2 large cooling fans that move alot of air so you have to make sure the heatsink is kept dust free or it starts ot overheat when running graphics intesnisve programs (something like the Sims 2).

Next time I buy a lappy Toshiba will be at the very top of my list.

As an Apple Cultist, I have to ask, why not buy this? It runs Vista also (you do know that everything Vista does, Mac's OS X did first--and still does, better and less of a memory hog). Yep. There's a free program that will let you run bug-ridden Vista on this laptop if you really want to. And it comes with a built in camera.

Bug-ridden is so right! Get a Mac, and do all your netsurfing on the pc, that way if you get a virus none of it touches your important stuff.... its all protected on the mac. Well... that's how I go anyway... OS9.1 for me tho.

Can XP be run on a mac? i want a mac, i need that no hassle usage as i use my pc so much. My current PC is crapping out on me constantly, so i am probably getting a laptop soon.

Yes, Windows will run on a (reasonably new) Mac. But itn't the entire point of having a Mac that you get to run MacOS instead?

Yes, but the reason I became an expatriot of the cult of the Mac was because I got tired of going to the store to buy software and seeing 30 isles of PC software and 1 half rack of Mac software. If I had the option to run both I could use the Mac side for maybe 75% of my work including surfing where it's safer. And then flip to the PC side to run the programs you can;t get for the Mac. This dual platform option means that there is now a chance that my next PC may be a new Mac, something I wouldn't have considered a few years ago.

yes...unfortunately for me, price is a huge consideration. I wish it wasn't, but such is life.

Yea, but then you'll have to register and buy XP for your laptop. It costs about $120.00 to get the genuine version, so you may want to ask if they can give you a deal on that.

True, the Mac is not as cheap as that Dell, and if there's a limit on what can be spent, than that decides it, doesn't it? If $700 (say) is the max, than that's that. But Cloudy didn't indicate a price limit (though I presumed she didn't want to go into the upper laptop range of, say, $2K), and the Apple is reasonably priced given what it can do.

Macs ARE Intel based systms these days. That's why Windows runs on the Mac. For all intents and purposes, they are PCs. The only reason MacOS doesn't run on other PCs is that Apple won't allow it to. because then a lot of peopole would buy other cheaper PCs and run it there instead.

Make sure you get the disk from dell for the drivers you will need for the hardware they install...it should be in the packet of back up disks in the box...should be?!?!

I believe there was a class action suit, don't know if it was ever decided, to allow OS X to be installed on a cheap PC.

But I also think I saw the OS X disks for sale at the local computer store and I think it said Intel compatible, have to have a look next time I'm there.

I just got a new MacBook care of my insurers. My four year old Powerbook got damaged beyond repair on the way back from USA. (Hence my absence from Lit) The MacBook is GREAT!!!

Speaking from personal experience, I'll never buy a Dell again. I bought a fresh laptop in the spring of '04, and three years later, it's in the shit-can. The much-ballyhooed customer service has never given me anything but a headache. The failures started with the CD-drive (hardware issue, they said -- I'd have to replace it myself), spread to the networking card (must be an issue with your local network, they insist), and finally collapsed the entire system itself. Even if I weren't a Mac enthusiast (I usually work on my wife's PowerMac), I'd be pretty much done with the PC/Windows platform at this point. Good luck, whatever you choose, Cloudy. Just try not to get too attached...
