Convienient, yes. Portable, yes. But, in my opinion, computers were never meant to be moved around like laptops are. There are a lot of plastic parts in computers, these days, and getting more plastic every day. If the computer isn't made well, there will not be a metal frame that everything screws into. If there's no metal frame, all of the parts screw together and with time and use those parts tend to get loose. Also, the purpose of a laptop is to be portable, so everything is made smaller. it's scary to look at a laptop's hard drive compared to one you'd find in a desktop. And, any additional cards or memory modules are also smaller and getting smaller every day. I sincerely believe that if the larger screens weren't popular and keeping oaptops a certain size, they'd be the size of palm pilots or a blackberry with fold out keyboards. And, you thought the keyboards are small NOW!
Any movement is going to slowly cause a laptop wear and tear. That's a fact of life. Most people put them on their knees, on their lap, on the bed or some other unstable surface without even giving it a second thought. And, the place that gets the most wear is the hinge where the screen connects to the kekypad.
Look at this against a desktop. What is the part most often used and abused on a desktop? The keyboard or mouse or both, right? And how much would it cost to replace those? not much.
What is the most often used and abused part of a laptop? Actually, it's the whole laptop itself. Do you put your desktop in a bag and carry it around? No. Do you take it out of the bag a lot and plop it down on a hard table top and quickly open the screen, bdcause you're in a hurry? No. Do you quickly finish what you need in a program and politely slam the screen down and return it to the bag, because you're in a hurry to meet someone? No.
just like I said...over time, a laptop will wear out with normal use a LOT sooner than a desktop will. A desktop is rarely moved once it is setup. Can you say that about your laptop? No.
OK, maybe I'm down on laptops, because I don't like them. I never did and I never will. I hated working on them, and I know it's only gotten worse because everybody wants a laptop and with WIFI connections, they are even more in demand.
But, I'll never own one. Oh, I might use one, if I'm forced to and the company I work for buys it...but I will never buy a laptop. Shit, for one reason, they move the keys around so much, you can sometimes NEVER know where the one you need is. And, you may need to use the function key to get that key to work. I won't even go into the small size of the keys, and that my fingers don't fit. Geeeeezzz. I'm getting chills, just thinking of those days when I had to work on them.

FF, you know, that spot where the screen connects to the computer has a lot of wires going through there. And some of them are not really wires but thin film that has the necessary circiuts emprinted on it. One little crack or even a crease in one od those and something isn't going to work.

Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeell I have only ever owned Laptop computers mainly because I don't like big ugly appliances .....shush don't even go there ........ also because I don't want a dedicated Computer area and I love to travel , I like it blend / disappear . Hate TV's on display as well for that matter .
Ohh back to Laptops.....lol.......sorry. I kill one about every four years and that about covers upgrades in technology. This one I am using now is passed 'Military Drop Proof' ie I should be able to throw it on the floor and have no damage. It not anything I have attempted to apply even though its a 'feature'. The biggest problem I have found with Laptops wearing is actually where the power adapter plugs in wearing out from strain on the cord from moving it about when you are not using the battery exclusively. This one is already getting a little indifferent in that Department and I need to double check its charging.

Resellerrating.com its a rating site that the consumer sends the stuff in on the products so you will see the good, the bad, and the ugly. Its a nice resource to have handy too.

I don't think this is Acer's fault to tell you the truth. I think the last problem was finally diagnosed after half a year and at least four times in the shop as being a tiny memory chip that had burned out. This is one that was ADDED to the computer by the seller/tech guy because my wonderful husband wanted me to have more memory on that lap top.

External HD then cost less then 200 bucks and might have saved repair time?? Or are you talking RAM strips?

Random access memory, it you add more of it to a computer then it will work better and run programs faster. I know what it does but not how to explain well enough to others.
