What happened to the basic grammar rules of punctuation?
Don't bother asking a person who posts like that to correct it. I've tried numerous times to encourage others to write correctly, but every time so far the response has been "u cant tell me ho to rite you porbaby cant rit urself u jelous" and the like.

I suppose most people don't want to write well. That doesn't mean I won't continue to think that those who refuse correction and write horribly aren't freaking dumb, but it is sad and may well mean that what one of my friends said is true...we live in a post-literate world.

Most of my peeves have been mentioned, but I don't think this one has:

A lot - indicating a large number, very much, etc.

Alot - not a word.

i'm sorry, i just can't resist this one.

Next time you get Alot, respond in question with, "Allot? So, how much do i actually get?"

Turn the conversation into a version of who's on first.

That's a good trick.

I often embarass my students into speaking correctly by pretending to misunderstand their poor grammar.

An actual conversation:

"Yo teach, what you got for us today?"

"Teach what I got for you today? Well if I teach what I have for you tomorrow what'll I teach then?"

"Mr. Marquis, what are we learning today?"

"Grammar apparently."

Closer to Home

The thing that drives me absolutely nuts, and that I consider a dead-giveaway for someone who has little experience in this part of the dark forest, is when someone says:

"I want a dominate man to take control of me..." or somesuch.

The difference between "dominate" and "dominant" ought to be something that you pick up pretty early.

When someone uses "dominate" when they mean "dominant" tells me that either they don't know what they're talking about or that their language skills are sub-par. In either case, I pass them by.

Sin.

And a casual perusal of the thread bears out your prediction.

Interesting choice of words if you chose to pun.

Pick them apart.

You can pull two meanings other than the one you intended.

Only you, AA... I noted the "sub" part, but didn't bother to go any deeper... sheesh. My brain is atrophying. Too much exposure to lawyers, judges and defendants.

Wondered if you'd pick up on that, even as I wrote it...

i give as good as i get, sometimes better ... or is that bytor?

Ok, One of mine is ...

Bought and Brought

Bought - Past tense of "Buy"; to purchase; exchange goods or services for something of value.

He bought the groceries at the store.

Brought - Past tense of "Bring"; to move something from one place to another.

He bought the groceries at the store, brought them home and put them away.

I'll keep an eye out for others...
Don't get me started on the "ringing of fingers", "ringing of ears" and the "wringing of hands" ...

You eat dessert, and avoid getting sand from a desert in it.

You can only use principle as a noun, but can use principal as a noun, or adjective. Therefore, the principal assistant principal can whip your @ss for not following accepted principles of behavior in school.

A sadistic biter can force bitter tears from a playmate.

To be fair, my grammar, punctuation, and spelling have all taken an atrocious slide since getting online. Anyone else notice the same?

So I tend not to even really kvetch about it, unless it's so problematic I have no idea what the hell the person in question might be trying to say.

Actually, I appreciate this thread. I am learning...thank you all. I am sure you all know I need it...lol

I will have to read this thread again and again to insure I lock the correct use of each word.

Edited to change ensure to insure. ty AA for the links(below are my finding and why I changed it from ensure to insure.)
(2 : to make certain especially by taking necessary measures and precautions)

Arrrrrgggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhh...

Sense and Since

Sense - There are many meanings - these are a few: a concious awareness or rationality (Master came to his senses); perceived by use of one of the senses (smell, touch, taste, etc.); a particular kind or type of awareness (a sense of humor)

Since - from a definite point in the past until now (It has been two months since Master left.)

Homophones are the most difficult to master because they sound alike and in the passion of typing ( ) ... well you can see how these errors can happen ...

Oh buddy, did you hit a live wire ...

Care to place your bets?

Ensure.

Insure. Take a real close look at the second definition.

If your tail was on the line, subject to bufu by Netzi and Shadowsdream, which would you pick? And no, you don't even get a reach around for a consolation prize.

Don't forget to add "asure" or is it "assure"

Yes, now that you mention it, I have noticed that about your grammar. :)

OK, you no I tend to right storys. Because I due that, I must dew my best to use correct grammar. So, too do that, I need two no we're and when too use what word, so I want loose my readers.

Now, because they're are some whom are just terrible at righting correctly, that goes to say their are some whom would also be equally as terrible at reading correctly.

My point is, if you are terrible at reading correct grammar, whom due you think is going too understand they're storys, with the grammar corrected?

I was wondering that, because some of my storys don't have much of a following, so does anybody no watt could be my problem? And, if I dew have a problem, could it be my spelling, my choice of words, my choice of subjects or could it be my grammar?

You no, my latest story has kind of taken hold with some readers, as their drawn too it's special subject matter. Their pretty lose with they're sexual dews and don'ts and also can seem down write odd to those who are more vanilla then kinky.

Anybody got some ideas on this?
