My wife has recently becone very responsive to being touched around her anus, not just regular caressing the butt cheeks but right on her asshole. This is a recent development and only when she is already very aroused. How do I progress things without shutting her down? She seems to like when I gently caress my fingers around the opening but not so much when I press against it. Is it just the tease that she likes rather than the actual touching? Genuine advice welcome

Ask her. Specifically, ask her for permission to go a little farther. If she says "No," then leave it at that. Her anus, her rules.

It could be that the area around the anus is more sensitive than the anus itself, and that's what's turning her on. She may also have the same issues that many of us have with penetration of the anus itself. (I've never found the prostate exam to be much fun, even though it isn't painful for me.)
