Tights (pantyhose) came along in the 1960's, a necessity when the mini skirt became popular. I can only remember back as far as the 1970's. Back then, a lady would put her tights on first, followed by her knickers. This would leave the seam of her tights chaffing her vagina, but the visual effect of her tights disappearing into the legs of her knickers was a sight to behold.
I believe that this practice has all but died out now. The ladies - if they bother with tights at all - now put their knickers on first and pull their tights over the top, the knickers now unable to stop the gusset of the tights sagging.
In the 1970's, most ladies wore skirts or dresses and they would ALWAYS wear tights or stockings with them. On the rare occasions when a woman went bare legged, her pins would appear an unbaked pastry colour. We're used to it now, but back then, it looked horrible. Back in the day (wartime) when stockings were unavailable, women would paint their legs with gravy colouring or go to great lengths to get them off Yank soldiers, that's how important they were!
Unfortunately, I don't get to look up that many skirts, so maybe I'm full of nonsense. Therefore it's up to you to give me and the other forum readers some insight!
"Pins" is a slang term for legs (I didn't want to use the word legs [or legged] twice in the same sentence)!
