I had a dear friend tell me tonite, inspite of a doctors warning about quiting smoking,

she was NOT going to quit because

"she knew she would get fat"

and I said "c'mon, your not measured by your weight", "Your beautiful and you know it"

am I naive?

has it come to this?

I mean this is a true old friend who used to work with me and is in a solid relationship with someone who loves her unconditionally!

yet shes paranoid?
and she's beautiful, regardless of her weight!

aw,man, tell me its not so...

Im going to run to the store for latenight snacks...
Ill be back to read....:rose:

I'm probably not the best person to answer this, considering I smoke. *blush*

But if a doctor said out right that I just had to quit .. I would.

I think that maybe she's deluding herself, as we all love to do from time to time.. and isn't taking his warnings as seriously as she should.

My best friends stepmother's breast cancer came back, after having been in remission for years and years. She refused chemo. Why? Was it because she didn't want to be sick? No. Was it because they gave her very little chance for survival even if she taken the treatment? No, quite the contrary her chances were rather high.

She opted not to simply because she didn't want to lose her long beautiful hair. She still had it on the day she passed away. It was a shame that she only realized how foolish she'd been when it was too late to c hange the course.

I didn't gain any weight when I quit. But I also didn't trade one bad habit for another (eating instead of smoking).

I didn't want to start another "bad" habit.. so I didn't do the sucker, life saver or sunflower seed thing. I did it all on sheer willpower and the patch :D

Who knows. Listen, I just spent the past year watching my mom go through chemo and radiation for breast cancer. Guess what? She's still smoking a pack a day. which she figures is ok because she didn't have "that kind of cancer"

its plain old rationalization...

and god knows I have rationalized a time or two...

Woody Allen : " We can't get through a day without a few juicy rationalizations"

Unfortunately, I have a lot of friends who refuse to quit smoking for this exact reason. Women get the message everyday that in order to be considered beautiful you have to be thin/small. To some women, that is more important than their health. Hopefully your friend will come to her senses before it's too late.

exacxtly,

shes sculpture

no matter her size

its really mindblowing to me

My mom had a stroke almost 4 years ago. Her left carotid artery is 100% accluted.. with no chance of having any kind of surgery to repair it.

The right carotid artery is 78% accluted.. they could do surgery but she refuses.

She smokes 1.5-2 packs a day. She can't smell or taste anything. She can't breath (it doesn't help that she is asthmatic too). But yet.. she figures she's going to die anyway.. why not die smoking.

Hopefully when she goes it will be during the day.. so her cigarette doesn't kill me and my family too.

You just can't make someone stop if they don't want to.

Good luck to your friend :)

Yes, it's hell.. every day is hell.

I've slipped a couple of times.. but for the most part I haven't smoked since September.

DO NOT READ IF YOU ARE SQUEAMISH. DO READ IF YOU NEED ANOTHER REASON TO QUIT SMOKING

Congrats, freaky.

eagleyez, I'm sorry to hear about your friend. Thank god I've never started - my grandma died of emphysema, (spelling?) and my dad died a horrible death of smoking related things... which I usually don't go into, but I will, and maybe you can scare your friend with.

DO NOT READ IF YOU ARE SQUEAMISH. DO READ IF YOU NEED ANOTHER REASON TO QUIT SMOKING.

There, I warned you.

My dad was a heavy smoker, Lucky Strikes, no, not that filtered kind. He didn't have cancer, but he did have a really horrible horrible cough. He coughed so hard and so much that he actually ruptured something in his throat, a blood vessel, I guess.

When I left for college at the end of August, 5 and a half years ago, he looked terrible - his stomach was taut, swollen, and looked like he was working on a starvation stomach like those poor kids have in the "send us money" tv ads.

He said it didn't hurt, he didn't understand it, and he was Done with Doctors. (They have not often been right about things, or helpful to people in my family. I distrust them, too.) He bled to death internally, slowly. He died alone at home; he was only 49 or 50, you'd have to ask my mom. She came home from work and found him, on the floor by the toilet in the bathroom, he had been throwing up blood, and finally died of it. That was about a month after I had last seen him.

So tell your friend it's not just cancer that smoking can kill you with. And if you flame me for sharing this, you oughta be smacked. I'm not fishing for sympathy, either, just hoping someone else will quit paying the tobacco industry for the pleasure of bringing their death one day closer at a time.

and unfortunately you can still die of Lung cancer if you never smoked...

My Uncle's wife Judy died last September of Lung Cancer.. Judy never smoked, My Uncle Gary never smoked, her parents never smoked... she didn't live around second hand smoke... but in February 2002 she was diagnosed with lung cancer that had metasticized to her brain and liver...She was 65, a sweet woman, kind, loving, cheerful, funny, a wonderful artist, and looking forward to enjoying her grandkids and retirement.... Some things are unfathomable...

Which is not to say that smoking is cool... it certainly increases your chances of dying of lung cancer, COPD, Emphysema and other horrible things...

Watergirl I am sorry that your dad died the way he did... what a shame and a waste...

You can't make her quit and by taking them away you may well drive a wedge in the friendship.

Instead of using violent methods to convey your message do it with kindness, understanding and love. You'll get alot further.

Build her up rather than tear down something that is a safety net for her leaving her no where to fall.

Its all in how you look at it.
