OK, Come on resident Swedes. You've got to make up for this sad lil display. I know you can do better than an hour and a half!
Kissed off: Swedish couple fail in Valentine's Day smoochathon bid
Mon Feb 14,10:40 AM ET
STOCKHOLM (AFP) - A Swedish couple attempting to break the world record for the longest kiss broke off their Valentine's Day bid after a measly one hour and 34 minutes, more than 29 hours short of the record.
The couple, Clara Ahlstroem, 38, and 41-year-old Hannu Kiviaho, were chosen by Sweden's state-run pharmacy chain Apoteket to try to break the record as part of a campaign it organised to improve dental hygiene.
US couple Louisa Almedovar and Rich Langley have held the record for the longest smooch -- 30 hours, 59 minutes and 27 seconds -- since December 5, 2001.
Despite rigorous training, including following a healthy diet, brushing their teeth under medical surveillance and learning to use different types of dental floss, the Swedish couple couldn't even come close to the record.(Maybe they should've worked on the kissing instead of their flossing, though I must admit to quite a bit of curiosity about this medical surveillance of teeth brushing...How does one break into that career?)
"We'll have to console ourselves with the fact that we are Swedish champions," Kiviaho said in a statement on Apoteket's website, which pointed out that the couple's efforts were hindered by the fact that Clara had developed a nasty cold.
Apoteket pointed out that a peck on the cheek requires the use of 12 facial muscles while a French kiss sets 34 different facial muscles in action.
During an open-mouthed kiss, two individuals on average exchange 40,000 parasites, 250 different types of bacteria, along with varying amounts of salt, fat, protein and other organic substances, according to Apoteket. Now that's love
Since a kissing couple also burns about four calories per minute, the Swedish pair burned a total of 376 calories, compared to at least 7,436 they would have burnt if they had broken the world record.
