Here is a follow up story about the female Vermont National Guard member who was harassed last week while in uniform near Plainfield, Vermont.

The article states that it is not the intent of the Guard member to prosecute for a hate crime. According to Vermont law, a crime like simple assualt can be modified by up to two years in prison and $2000 in fines if motivated by a person's membership in the armed forces.

In the words of Lt. Col. Scott Stirewalt, director of security for the Vermont National Guard, "She reported it (to me) and we were concerned about soldier safety, but our intent was not to prosecute these kids for a hate crime," Stirewalt said. "And I think it speaks highly of her character that she decided to handle it in that fashion."

The gaurds are hardly as disenfranchised as gays or blacks to begin with. Everyone lines up around the block to kiss the military's ass.

Isn't that close to Maine, where the teachers mentally harrassed the kid of deployed service members? And the Guard there brushed it back to the school administrators, who did nothing?

When is the Army going to teach members more aggression? I would of duct taped those little bastards/bastettes together until the cops came, and made a citizen's arrest, a lawsuit would follow on everyone/thing within my range.

Public education in this country is a wonderful thing........

B4 school our kids are given an update on the war, why they should oppose it, how terrible it is, graphic descriptions of the worst side of it......... which would be fine if there was some balance, but nope, that's it......

Then there is wonderment in the media at how a protest by a bunch of schoolkids in the middle of Sydney could turn violent???????

ALL of the violence being perpetrated appeared to be coming from those of middle eastern extraction.........a wonderful public display that did absolutely fuckall to get them anything but more public hatred/disdain.......

When they interviewed them as to why they were protesting, they said they wanted peace..........who doesn't?

When asked about Saddam, they didn't know who he was, they didn't know who the president of the US was, they didn't even know where the fuck Iraq is!!! Yet these kids were encouraged to skip school and go into the city to protest, an action supposedly permitted by their parents...........

Am I the only one who doesn't get this???????????????

Yes the country is kissing the military's ass in this era of jingoism. But you cannot blame the individual soldiers for doing thier jobs. A single VT guard member is not the person who is making policy. The policy makers are the ones that should be harassed, not the people having to deal with the policies. Soldiers, sailors, slackers...everyone in the country, in the world, is having to deal with the policies, just differently. Servicemen and women have to deal with it by doing thier jobs.

That said, if the people were harassing this woman just because she was wearing a uniform, that should be cocidered just as bad as hicks harassing a gay man, punk christians harassing muslims and anyone that's not christian, or anyone harassing another based on race.

Actually, the ANTI crowd gets away with things the PRO crowd won't do! To date, the PRO crowd has protested peacefully while the peace crowd has been violent.

I guess violence against police or members of our own military are considered "peaceful" actions.

Personally, I think those kids should have gotten jailed.
