Despite my efforts I have been accused of not writing "realistic" stories because my words are not in line with today's generation. I want to start a thread where "legal" teens share their unique vocabulary. Their fingers text at speeds that amaze us, mostly using abbreviations of whch I (we) are unaware.

I see a text-message erotic story in this but don't know the jargon.

Wuld appreciate help.

I do this sometimes too. Maybe it's because I often find myself seeing strange meanings in common everyday words.

K, m8, all u need 2 do is 2 fink of how a word sounds, almost liek phonetics, then jus type it as u hear it, and dont forget teh odd typo evry now and gain.

Seriously: text speak isn't at all erotic, and, for me, would highly distract me from the story!

I can see the fun in the novelty of it, though.

Have you considered that maybe they were talking about the language you use (i.e. slang/dialect), as opposed to how you actually type the words? Just speculating here, and to be honest, I say "fuck 'em!" Just write how you want to write.

If you write a story in 'modern teenspeak' it will soon be unintelligible to the next generation of teens. Look at dialect by some classic authors - Kipling's army slang was accurate at the time, but now?

A few points from the Great and Powerful WOK-

1) Realistic? To who and about whom? I agree - current teenspeak will go out of fashion before you can even get the page thru the editing process. And not every teen everywhere says the same things in the same way. Teens in Queens NY speak VERY differently than teens here in the ambiguous south. I'm guessing those who might be complaining that stories aren't "realisitic enough" - may - *ahem*- not be old enough to be in this forum. Just about anyone over the age of 20 finds teenspeak annoying - yo.

2) Why not just set the story some time in the past? The 80's? The 70's? That way you don't have to be on the bleeding edge of the current way to bastardize the English language.

3) Realism is what happens in the story - not usually the language of the narration. Think Benji from The Sound and the Fury - people usually find narrations done directly from the mind of a unique personality to be annoying and complicated. Narration should be spoken in that "narrator" voice that has remained pretty much unchanged since the 1920's.

I'm sorry - I'm just not interested in a "realistic story" if it gives a whole meaning to "Yo Bitch - That shit is tight!"
