Update 6:41: (EST) The Unite the Right 2 rally ended well before its original start time of 5:30 p.m. With the white supremacists gone and rain falling, most of the thousands of counterprotesters dispersed from the area around Lafayette Square. But some groups remain downtown, with rolling street closures in effect and reports of some skirmishes with police.

Not the whole train. Just the one car from the Vienna Metro station that the demonstrators were in--which is quite sensible, I think. Other riders on the route were directed to other cars of the same train.

For me as a researcher, the most surprising aspect of this mobilization was that militias got involved. Now, militias are highly organized, they do tactical training, and also do not usually group-up with other organizations in this way. In looking at which groups were mobilizing to go to Charlottesville, I became very concerned around the breadth of the different kinds of groups that were going to be present.

Our government’s move toward a white-nationalist agenda is fueling local street violence in a way that is going to lead to more death, and we’re also going to have this centrifugal force that brings more people into the issues and into the battles. It’s not going to go away unless the government stops hyper-focusing policy on anti-immigrant sentiments.

The police sat in parked cars and let 400 fascists march toward their town's university. They let the 400 adult fascists and militia trained by the Marines, beat 30 teenage students and university staff.

The police stood by the next day, and let fascist beat citizens in their town.

Minutes before their rally was scheduled to begin in front of the Rotunda, UVA student activists dropped a banner that said, “Last year they came with torches, this year they come with badges,” and instructed hundreds of attendees to move their demonstration a few hundred feet over, where cops weren’t already waiting for them and where they wouldn’t have to pass through metal detectors.


7:20pm, riot cops lined up at the new rally location at Brooks Hall, and the activists began hurling a new chant at them: “Why are you in riot gear? We don’t see no riot here.”

Some went face to face with the law enforcement, while others advised them not to escalate the situation. As they settled down and the rally resumed peacefully, its attendees were again on the move.

They then paraded through town, chanting and cheering as people came out of their homes and businesses to clap along or record the chaos on their cellphones. A few miles later (they took the long way), they had arrived on the Downtown Mall, and as cops in reflective vests began to line up on Market Street, the activists decided to call it a night.

Still a few cops cars, but although the announced security plan called for strict controls until 6am Monday, the checkpoints are gone, and anyone can now walk, unchecked, into the former security zone in Charlottesville. (Oh, wait, now these cop cars have just driven away.)

It does look like the white nationalists increasingly are losing any coordinated agenda they might have had. They are squabbling among themselves. The court cases after Charlottesville in 2017 have caused several of the militias to pull out, and those who coordinated Charlottesville are either still in jail or have discovered they, in fact, don't have a shared agenda. So, in this case, the white nationalists not having an agenda is a good thing. Sorry JNumbers (not).

They remain sleazebags on an individual basis, of course.

There was just one moment when I thought I might see a white supremacist get killed. There were two of them, a man and a woman, the only two real live enemies I saw the entire day. Both were sagging in late middle age, both plump, both with long, gray hair, the man with a beard. Both, for reasons I do not know, had chosen the very peak of the anti-white supremacist rally as the time to traverse the one long block from Lafayette Square to Farragut Square.

(Thank goodness, trained peace keepers guided and protected them- usually a lone member of the minority community steps up, and protects the clueless person from her/his own minority community. This time, a crowd of people focused on peace stepped up.

The man being escorted out wore a panicked grin the whole time, the kind of grin you have when something horrific is happening and you don’t know how else to look. They somehow reached the line of police lazing around their vans by Farragut Square, and requested help. The cops obliged by pushing back the angry hordes, sealing off an entire city block, and hustling the two into a van to be removed.


Besides those two idiots who chose the worst possible time to exit Lafayette Square, I didn’t lay eyes on a single Nazi. The paltry few dozen who did come to DC sequestered themselves in an undisclosed location all weekend, then slunk into the protest area on a private train, protected all along by phalanxes of well-armed police. In Lafayette Square itself, the counterprotest crowd was so thick that I could not physically get close enough to see the few nervous racists who showed. Neither could most of the other people who came out to scream at them. I have no doubt that without the riot police that smuggled them in and out of Lafayette in private vehicles, those Nazis would have ended up as small piles of dust somewhere on 17th Street, never to be seen again.


Thousands of people came from around the country at their own expense to kick their asses. They were deprived of the opportunity to do so only because even most Nazis were not stupid enough to show their faces in public. By 5:30, when their rally was scheduled to begin, every single white supremacist had already left, drenched by the rain and probably very scared. The “Unite the Right” rally succeeded only in uniting the left.

The point if the huge police and Park officers presence was to keep the two groups apart.

They took "weapons" away from the racists shoved the racists on the train early, forced the racists to have their "rally" early. The racists were pulled off of the rally site, and delivered to a safe area for racists. Their racist's bus never showed up, and the police hauled them away in box vans. Misinformation was the police officers' friend.

The two groups never had direct contact.

Maybe, that is a good thing.

(Racist Ridiculousness) Cost D.C. $2.6 Million, According To City Estimate

District taxpayer dollars are expected to be reimbursed by a federal fund that covers the cost of providing public safety "at events related to the presence of the Nation’s Capital in the District." The 2018 appropriation is for a total of $13 million, meaning that "Unite The Right 2" would account for 20 percent of it.

The vast majority of D.C.'s expenditure, $2.5 million, went to the Metropolitan Police Department, which was operating with its entire staff on Sunday (officially known as "All Hands On Deck").


The Department of Public Works, which handles parking regulations and cleanup, had the next highest cost at $40,000, followed by the Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department at $34,000. The D.C. Homeland Security and Management Agency, which operates the Emergency Operations Center that Mayor Muriel Bowser activated, charged $12,000.


The transit agency said it would only release cost information through an open records request, which takes a minimum of 20 days.

(The WMATA had to keep the station closed to riders, and guided the rally and their media to light rail car marked Special. The leader of the racists was upset because the WMATA police put them on the train early. No additional racists showed up.)

Patriot Prayer Vancouver meeting point moved; hundreds head to Portland


150 Patriot Prayer supporters stood by in Vancouver on Saturday, awaiting bus transportation that would take them into the action.

Gibson, who lives in Vancouver, announced this week that shuttles with armed guards on them would be available to pick supporters up from the Grand Central Retail Center just east of downtown to take them into Portland.

But security and tow trucks milled around the Fred Meyer parking lot at 2500 Columbia House Blvd., ready to pick up anyone who left their car at the private shopping center. Portland-based commercial real estate firm NAI Elliot, which manages the property, announced Friday that anyone who parked except to shop or work would be towed at their own expense.

One woman was hit by a flash-bang grenade and went to the hospital with cuts and a possible arm fracture, her boyfriend told WW.

Oregonian reporter Eder Campuzano went to the hospital when he was hit in the head by a projectile thrown by counter-protesters.

Counter-protesters had been chanting "Who do you protect? Who do you serve?" all day, pointing to the larger number of officers facing antifascists as evidence of biased treatment. (The antifascist crowd was, however, significantly larger than the far-right gathering, which may have explained some of the attention it received.)

The Portland police actions today drew immediate rebuke from left-wing groups. Multiple observers described the police use of explosive devices as more aggressive than ever before at Portland protests.

Allegations of unequal treatment from Portland police have plagued city officials since at least last June, when officers kettles hundreds of counterprotesters at one of Gibson's earliest rallies.

Katie Shepherd, a journalist for Willamette Week covering the protests, reported that Portland police claimed to have seen protesters throw bottles and rocks at officers. Shepherd said she did not witness anything that would have instigated flash bangs to be deployed.
