Thanks. They won't be getting any better, but I appreciate the well wishes.
That's so sad... both at the same time. Stay strong, December. Stay strong.
I like the different perspective you've offered about perhaps any of us doing that one thing that could have helped or changed another and I immediately thought of something that happened recently.
One NFL Playoff Sunday my beau was cooking steaks on the grill and suddenly dashed inside and grabbed a baseball bat plus his cell phone. He blurted, "Keep an eye on the steaks" and then ran outside through the front door. Sooo cryptic and the look in his eyes gave me chills. Panic filled my entire being.
I went out to the balcony and saw him talking on his cell while pacing back and forth with the bat. That's when I heard it... the piercing, heart-wrenching sounds of woman screaming and moaning, "Help... Help me! Somebody help me!" It was coming from way over/between a huge row of trees and hedges about 40 yards to our right. An area not even accessible due to a tall so-called security fence.
Long story short, four squad cars came in what I'd call record time. With huge flashlights some ran on foot and found a hole through the so-called security fence and rescued the woman. She'd been dragged to wherever by several men and was being raped. Guess the rapists saw the flashlights and scrammed. Within her police report she mentioned hearing a man's voice yelling repeatedly (my beau) and a woman's voice shouting for them to stop (me... I could only muster up, "HEY, HEY, HEY, HEY, STOP! STOP! STOP! STOP!!" at the tops of my lungs). I was so frazzled by it all and her constant pleas for help made me tremble.
What really chapped my ass was that my typically nosy neighbors planted their collective asses inside during it all so as to not get involved, even with all the squad cars around. Well, that's not how my beau and I roll. We're both from the Midwest and probably stupid to call for help when help is needed rather than dismiss it and crank the television higher. Like the cop told my beau, "She was messed up pretty bad, you may have saved her life." So, there ya go.
