Just a quick rant

I’ve written a few stories here and generally enjoy the feedback I get on them. I’ve written enough to know an editor would be valuable to me. I’ve posted here looking for one, I’ve messaged editors prior to publishing a story to no avail. The rant part of this is boy the armchair editors come out of the woodwork once your story is published. Maybe I can find one willing to help here.

If you messaged editors via the editor program, it doesn’t work properly. There is no guarantee that those you contacted are still available or that their email is valid. There is no regular verification needed so it’s up to individuals to keep their profile up to date.

Here is your best option, again with no guarantees, but to aid your request, you should state as a minimum, the word count of the story, the category it will be submitted into, and a short piece about its content.

Not all editors will work on all categories, and may have a maximum word count.

Wait, you guys are getting armchair editors?

In all seriousness, the Volunteer Editors Program is a crapshoot. I'm 50/50. I've found a few people who are incredibly reliable, a few who've struggled with turnaround, a few who ghosted me mid-job, and then a whole bunch who simply never replied at all - not even to tell me 'no,' which the program very specifically tells them to do. In turn, I'm supposed to notify Lit about the latter, but there's no tools to keep track of who I reached out to, or how long it's been. I sent feedback to the site saying as much.

I'll give a shoutout to kenjisato in particular, even though I'd rather keep him all to myself. He takes that shit seriously. He's organized.

Coming at this from a different angle...

I don't know, but I doubt that there are many (if any) professional editors hanging out on Literotica offering their services for free. Mostly what you will have is authors and readers who enjoy erotic stories and are willing to spend a little of their spare time. This is further complicated by the largely anonymous nature of contributors here, and because editing is a time-consuming task and often a very prickly one.

I (very) occasionally offer to edit for someone, but I don't have the time or enthusiasm to sign up to any formal programme. If I see a thread that someone has started that makes it clear (a) what the length is, (2) what the plot and genre are, and (3) what sort of editing is being sought, then I may just bite.

If you have already published on Literotica, it may be worth starting a thread in Story Feedback.
If there are areas where you know you are weak, such as dialogue, grammar, tense, etc., then ask for help on these issues specifically.

To be honest, I've entirely given up on trying to find an editor I'm not even a Beta reader. I simply use a few tricks other writers have taught me.

1 Use a text to speech app either as a Chrome plug in or on my phone. That will catch a lot of typos and other items.

2 Hemingwayapp to catch grammer errors, run on sentences.

3 Grammerly to catch what hemingway misses.

4 one last run through the TTS. Then its ready to be posted.
