Juneteenth

This has not been a memorable Juneteenth so far. The mood is different than last year's celebration. A lot more angst and anger.

Not every holiday lives up to the anticipation.

I blame Trump. He coulda made it a yuuuuge celebration. Leaders should lead.

Former Vice President Joe Biden did not sponsor or co-sponsor any of the six bills recognizing Juneteenth during his time in the U.S. Senate, though he is now attempting to champion the holiday.

A search at Congress.gov confirmed that Biden was not involved in sponsoring or co-sponsoring any resolutions related to Juneteenth. Biden served in the Senate for 36 years

Nothing wrong with Biden jumpin' on the bandwagon.

Even Zumi made what Dick Durban would call a token effort at acknowledging this historic day.

It took Obama seven years to give it an honorable mention.

It's "been around" for fifteen decades except all of the ones from early to mid-century when it was entirely forgotten to the late sixties early seventies when it enjoyed a brief resurgence about the time the Democrats lost the fight over civil rights.

You couldn't be more wrong.

STATEMENT FROM PRESIDENT OBAMA ON THE OCCASION OF JUNETEENTH
On this day in 1865, more than two years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, those who found themselves still enslaved in Galveston, Texas had their hopes realized and their prayers answered. Contrary to what others had told them, the rumors they had heard were indeed true. The Civil War had ended, and they were now free.
General Gordon Granger issued the call with "General Order No. 3" saying "The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. " June 19, or Juneteenth, is now observed in 31 states. Nearly a century and a half later, the descendants of slaves and slave owners can commemorate the day together and celebrate the rights and freedoms we all share in this great nation that we all love.
This moment also serves as a time for reflection and appreciation, and an opportunity for many people to trace their family’s lineage. African Americans helped to build our nation brick by brick and have contributed to her growth in every way, even when rights and liberties were denied to them. In light of the historic unanimous vote in the United States Senate this week supporting the call for an apology for slavery and segregation, the occasion carries even more significance.

Conager wrong????

No Way:D

Chuckles:cool:

It's rather interesting Obama's birth state doesn't recognize Juneteenth

WASHINGTON — Juneteenth, commemorating the end of slavery in the U.S., is recognized by all but three states. However, only Texas, the state where Juneteenth originated, designated it as an official government holiday until this week.

Hawaii, North Dakota and South Dakota are the only states that do not recognize Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19, according to the Congressional Research Service. Of the 47 states that do acknowledge Juneteenth in one way or another, Texas, Virginia, New York and Pennsylvania are the only ones recognizing it as an official paid holiday for state employees.

Meh...

I’m over it, nobody addressed the actual question anyways.

Edited to add: Maybe I worded it poorly.

The wording doesn't matter when your reader(s)
respond not to what you wrote but to the running script in their head...

;) ;)
