Juneteenth

Why is this the first time (year) I’ve ever heard of it?

Is it some new thing?

Some companies are actually giving a paid holiday for it.

Is it merely a means of placating or catering to a section of the population?

I really have zero idea.

wow. it's almost as if there is an entirely separate (but unequal) culture going on in the u s that white people are unaware of. why IS this the first time YOU ever heard of it?

Obama, pressured by actually black leaders, finally made a feckless proclamation about "Juneteenth" in 2016, the last year he was in office. Trump did the same, but much earlier in his presidency.

Where are the previous years' threads where any of the wokest of the woke progressives were 'celebrating" Juneteenth?

I looked.
I found one.
There were a few scattered references in other threads...

But it's never been a real big deal here.

Let's assume one's ancestors were emancipated slaves and that unlike Texicans, learned of the proclamation years before. Would you still commemorate a random date that some isolated group discovered they were freed by the Republican POTUS?

Do Japanese-Americans calibrate a different ending of WWII because some Japanese soldiers were at "war" isolated on various islands for years later?

I think it’s curious that I’ve never heard of it, it's a legitimate question.

If it’s just some “white guilt” gimmick that is suddenly recognized by corporations and the mass media, that’s sort of ridiculous.

you hang out in a thread full of racist douchebags so it's no surprise that you haven't heard of it.

schism666 is a known bigot and celebrated cuckold.

Hatred for others. Hatred for self. That's a lot of hate.

Books. There are books:

https://fivebooks.com/best-books/juneteenth-barbara-krauthamer/

None of which have been read by all of the people poutraging about Trump picking the first available Friday after the rioters and looters canceled Covid concerns. The ones now pretending they had any plans at all to "celibrate" the important 155th anniversary but ignored the sesquicentennial.

hogjack used to be sort of funny several years ago but now that his nose is a bright orange, he's just a sad piece of republican shit.

My entire country closes down for the day so that we can celebrate a day, which we know to be at the wrong time of year, commemorating what wasn't the birthday of some guy that's been dead for thousands of years, but which a minority of people here think is a magical zombie friend.

Juneteenth seems pretty rational in comparison.

THIS

i had never heard of it before (being white and a brit).
just because i haven't doesn't mean it isn't an important day to celebrate/remember and i'm glad to have found out about it. I can see its historic importance and understand how the white-bias of american culture has kept it out of the arena of the non-poc's awareness for so long.

i'd not, till now, really even appreciated things like 'the conversation' black parents have to have with their children (as related by a black woman) where they have to explain to them that there are some things their friends can do but they can't, just because of the colour of their skins... things like taking a shortcut to the park by hopping over a few neighbours' fences. Their white friends might get ignored or yelled at, but the kids with a darker shade of skin might get the cops called on them.

My guess would be that you're a racist asshat who couldn't care less about it and therefore never heard of something that has been around for several decades at least, has it's own flag and is mentioned by the White House every year.

Juneteenth is the title of Ralph Ellison's posthumous novel, which came out around the turn of the century. I'm trying to recall if I had heard of the term prior to that. At any rate, I think Ellison deserves a lot of the credit for getting Juneteenth more widely discussed nationally; as mentioned above, it's been a big deal in Texas for a long time.

Trump said that he to inform his people of the date because he was the only one who knew about it. No shit.

It took Obama seven years to give it an honorable mention.

It's "been around" for fifteen decades except all of the ones from early to mid-century when it was entirely forgotten to the late sixties early seventies when it enjoyed a brief resurgence about the time the Democrats lost the fight over civil rights.

completely ignoring all the poc and caucs who DID know about it, and now trying to take credit for making the name day "famous". you just can't make this stuff up.

I can't remember. Were you in America, this time last year in time to celebrate Juneteenth with your hillbilly neighbors?

How did that go?

You couldn't be more wrong.

Statement from President Obama on the occasion of Juneteenth

STATEMENT FROM PRESIDENT OBAMA ON THE OCCASION OF JUNETEENTH
On this day in 1865, more than two years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, those who found themselves still enslaved in Galveston, Texas had their hopes realized and their prayers answered. Contrary to what others had told them, the rumors they had heard were indeed true. The Civil War had ended, and they were now free.
General Gordon Granger issued the call with "General Order No. 3" saying "The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. " June 19, or Juneteenth, is now observed in 31 states. Nearly a century and a half later, the descendants of slaves and slave owners can commemorate the day together and celebrate the rights and freedoms we all share in this great nation that we all love.
This moment also serves as a time for reflection and appreciation, and an opportunity for many people to trace their family’s lineage. African Americans helped to build our nation brick by brick and have contributed to her growth in every way, even when rights and liberties were denied to them. In light of the historic unanimous vote in the United States Senate this week supporting the call for an apology for slavery and segregation, the occasion carries even more significance.

I had heard of it before. Not surprising to see certain people here mocking it, like little tranny connie.
We get it, you guys hate black people and things they hold dear.

Your comment perfectly illustrates the effect institutional racism has on society. White culture dominates society to such an extent that perhaps the most important day in black American history is unknown to you. It's very similar to how people don't know what Kwanzaa is or belittle its significance.

Thanks for your help in highlighting the issue.
