John McCain's office just announced that McCain has brain cancer, the same virulent type that killed Joe Biden's son.

Can't say I was ever a huge fan of his, but he's a genuine military hero, and nobody deserves a brain tumour. I hope he can pull through this.

He's not Trump's kind of hero, because, well, he got caught.

"He survived Sarah Palin....cancer doesn't stand a chance" -Betty Bowers

He didn't survive Palin. She took the remnants of his testicles with her. He's been all tall talk and NO action since then. Stop sugar-coating history! Let's talk about cancer patients without insurance. How many years did McCain and his GOP have to work on a health plan? Did he give a fuck?

Do not sanctify McCain, who has been a sleezy person and among the sleaziest of senators in recent generations. I look forward to a better replacement.

I wasn't a supporter for his Presidential run, but he sacrificed for our country and I've never doubted his love for the U.S. Thank you for your service Mr. McCain.

I hope he gets the best treatment possible, from Dr's and the public.

I don't like the guy, I wouldn't vote for him, I would much rather Kelli Ward had beaten him in the primary but to give McCain his due, he served our country in many ways, both in the military and afterwards.

I too look forward to his replacement but like IcePrincess, I've never doubted his love for the U.S. Like all of us, he's a human being and I think he deserves at the very least our sympathy for his condition. It's not one I'd wish on anyone, even the one's I really dislike.

He's fuckin' 80. I feel really bad for him, and I think that is a terrible thing for somebody to go through... but he's not supposed to live forever. This is part of why America is in debt. We try to make everybody live forever, we try to bypass nature, and we even try to bypass Natural Selection. Shit genes are being passed down from generation to generation because we try to save everybody!

And don't get me weong. I mean, he's a good man. He fought for our country, he was a POW, and he worked hard after that.

I suppose you could say, "well, what age is acceptable to hope they make it through?" I dunno. I really don't. 60-80 is such a grey area. Like for instance, I'll just arbitrarily pick Hillary. Yeah if she got brain cancer, I could understand the sentiment. I would probably say I hope she pulled through. Trump is 70-71? Now, I'd probably be more on the fence. But he's rich so he can pay for his own healthcare even though he probably wouldn't have to.

Anyway, that's not the point. We can't save the world. And if we did, the Earth would literally lose any and all resources. So, you have to choose whether you care about quality or quantity of life. I choose quality.

But yeah, that sucks. Sorry to hear. I hate it for him. I hope he doesn't have to suffer from a long battle since that's a miserable way to die. And if they caught it in time, then that's great. But... he's 80.

Unlikely to recover, its the same type as that dealt to Ted Kennedy and Biden's son. Hope he doesn't suffer too much.

He and Mitch got great health care for life the day they got elected. Want great health care? Get elected to Congress, otherwise, you're on your own. And Mitch is trying to put everybody on their own that isn't in Congress.

This. Beyond that, he's had moments of majesty (starting with refusing to leave the POV camp when he could have and be used for propaganda purposes by the Vietnamese), which is more than most of us manage. He's fallen to greater depths from time to time than most, of course.

He deserves to be treated with dignity at this time on grounds of humanity. I think who we should be pointing to at this point is the draft dodger Donald Trump who said that McCain's not a hero for risking his life for his country and being shot down in the process and remaining in a brutal prison on principle when he could have gone home because of who his daddy was.

Good summation. He'd earned the reputation as a "Maverick" throughout his political life, but post-2008 he seems to have retrogressed to become a rather mundane lockstep Republican.

I hope he beats this.

Can we not separate out McCain the human being from the politics? I respect McCain's military service, as I do anyone who has served in the military. But that respect is seperate from the political infighting and fighting that goes on. By bringing the other in, we move away from McCain and into squabbling like kids over politics. I'd rather just wish McCain well and leave all the rest of tHe baggage to one side. He deserves that at least.

I don't believe you can separate a politician from politics. They are what they've done, or not done. He brought Palin on us and did not squelch McConnell or 'Rump.

Yep but that's a different thing from somewhat terminal brain cancer which is a godawful thing to happen to anyone. I'd show the same consideration to the Clintons, detest them as I do.

I wish him the best, though I am a "scum of the earth pinko commie fascist tree hugging fake news reader, I did vote for him over the asshole who lied us into Iraq.
You all want Hillary and Obama? Give us the Bush regime

Shit... even Glenn Beck says we all need to start getting along or we are fucked

In that spirit... to support a right winger

Indeed. As were Lee Atwater, Ted Kennedy, and others, few of whom were saints. We can sympathize with McCain's plight without white-washing his too-often-sordid past.
