A Gateshead art gallery which exhibited a statue of Jesus Christ in a state of sexual arousal is facing court charged with outraging public decency.
The artwork was part of an exhibition at the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art which featured dozens of plaster figures - also including Mickey Mouse and ET - in a similar pose.

Lawyers for Emily Mapfuwa, a 40-year-old Christian who was offended by the artwork, will prosecute the gallery for outraging public decency and causing harassment, alarm and distress to the public.

Earlier this year, Mrs Mapfuwa contacted the Christian Legal Centre and sent a letter of complaint to Northumbria Police, asking for an investigation. She was informed by the police at the end of May that there was no case to answer.

The statue was part of Baltic's September 2007 to January 2008 exhibition by controversial Japanese artist Terence Koh "Gone, Yet Still".

Signs warning of the exhibition's content were posted at the entrance to the gallery.

A spokesman for the Christian Legal Centre, which is supporting the prosecution, said Mrs Mapfuwa believes in freedom of expression, but said "this statue served no other purpose than to offend Christians and to denigrate Christ".

A spokesman for Baltic confirmed the gallery was facing a civil prosecution at Gateshead Magistrates' Court for a breach of Section 5 of the Public Order Act and offending public decency, the maximum penalty for which is six months in prison and a £5,000 fine.

Can't even make a statue of Jesus with a boner!

Jeeeeeeesus (If I may say his holy name).

If there were signs posting a warning about the content, then she has nothing to complain about. She was warned. She doesn't have to go back.

Maybe she thought that he'd not been given a properly magisterial weiner?

It is people like this that makes the rest of us look bad.

Seriously... if you don't like something... don't look! The case shouldn't even make it to trial... Just a waste of time and money.

So, they are suing for non-false advertising cus the warning was accurate?

it doesn't say what the warning said.

and I wonder how many other religous figures were displayed. Did Buda have a hardon too? Muhamid? Or would that not be insincetive?

Edited 'cause I had a friend remove my head from my ass, thank you.

This does have an interesting precedent in the Sistine Chapel - if you believe Jesus was the word made Flesh, well the Flesh does include a winkie on most guys. Michelangelo was pretty aware of it.

I am distinctly uncomfortable with intimidation tactics when people are insulted. Democracy should protect from persecution, not discomfort.

Hah. Jesus is packin'! I knew it.

In all seriousness, though, I'm not surprised. I've seen this guy's work before--this really isn't that far off from what he usually does anyway. Some of his stuff is interesting, and some of it is really attention whorish (as in the "Oh look, I pissed on it, it's ART." bullshit). : http://nymag.com/arts/art/features/26275/

I don't see what the shocker is. Seeing the artist renditions of Jesus has evoked many a sexual response from yours truly as an adolescent. I can't be the first person to see a half naked man bolted to a cross and wonder what it would be like to have sex with him.

Jesus is sexy. Duh.

Did they sue over Mickey's boner? Was it all so indecent when it was the pecker of a cartoon mouse?

Ugly prosaic crappy art crime. Who cares if it looks like that?

So it wasn't so much a crime against Christians and decency as it was a crime against art?

All this thinking about Jesus and his skimpy loin cloth are getting me all worked up! I'm not kidding!

It is a serious crime. I need to go soak in the Richard Prince retro just to get over that.

Well, it looks a little better and less lumpy in that other photo. But it looks more like "Jesus with faucet"

Reminded me of a controversial Swedish artist whose exhibition Ecce Homo caused quite a ruccus for Sweden.

Oh my God, now THAT I love. It's kind of a one-liner but it's lovely.

He hung around with 12 guys and a bunch of prostitutes and lepers. Hm.

Before everyone freaks out at me and asks me how I'd feel about Moses sucking on a dong, or something - they're ideas. Judaism has survived 4000 years because it holds up to 'em and a lot worse.
