Maybe you could trash their stories back?

Manu does a sweep of scores, doesn't he, at the end of the month? You can PM him and he will clear out any suspicious scores that are the result of personal animosity or rivalry, I think.

The only way would be to shut off your voting and comments.

But of course that means you will not receive any good ones either.

if he does, i've never seen evidence of it. i have a few persistent trolls who regularly, and irregularly as it happens, pop up and leave a crappy comment, bomb the score, etc. y'know, the usual suspects with the usual crap. i realise this is mainly due to the fact that i can be a bit of a wanker at times - but that's me, i can't help it ... much.

still, the best thing to do, in my experience, is to shrug it off and suck it up - oh, and to fantasise about meeting up with a troll one day, when i've got a hammer, the van and plastic sheeting handy - not to mention the shovel. ;)

You can PM Laurel and ask for a sweep on individual stories or the whole lot. That usually helps the score, for a while anyway.

As for comments, you have control of what stays up and what is deleted. Use your own discretion as to what is trolling and what is not.

Mostly, you can ignore them. They want a rise out of you and to piss in your cheerios. Don't give them the satisfaction. You write, they probably don't. You create, they try to destroy. Screw them. Not literally, of course.

well, fuck me. i might give that a go! just to see.

Of course if your personal razzers notice a change, they can come back the next day and reinstate their votes. It would be nice if the system could just hold voters to the single vote whether it's swept earlier or not.

ah, fuck 'em, i'll just do it for the grin.

That is possible. In fact each ID is only allowed one vote. Go ahead and vote on a story then go back to it. You'll see whatever star you voted already filled in.

People who troll/one bomb to the extreme have alts and login to all of them.

There is a way for lit to "recognize" where the vote comes from and block it. That would actually eliminate the need for most of the sweeps because the propblem would be stopped before it started.

What's not possible is to get the site to care enough to do so.

But if the vote is swept, the stars are zeroed out and you can vote again--until it's swept again.

This came up when Laurel once posted that authors could vote for their own stories. I didn't think so, but since she said we could, I did on a couple of stories. The votes were swept (as I assumed they would be) and the stars were zeroed out. I voted again just to see what would happen and they were zeroed out in the next sweep. So I doubt Laurels statement that an author can vote his/her own story (and that that vote will survive the next sweep).

Exactly. Because the vote was swept it "erased itself" and they could do it again. So setting it so only one vote can come from an ip address would eliminate the need for a sweep.

The drawback is the one one vote would stay, the upswing is they can only give the one bomb and can't give you 6 a couple of which the sweep would leave anyway.

this would also eliminate the cheerleading and vote stuffing with the 5 votes.

What is recognized is your IP address, normally one per computer. Those "people who troll/one bomb to the extreme [and] have alts" are also the ones most likely to have the knowledge and experience to create spoofed IPs to enable them to wreak their havoc on Literotica and what ever other internet forums they choose to.

[In case you don't remember, it is not necessary to log in with your Lit name to cast a vote on a story.]

That's true in the case of sweeps, but not with respect to the stars. Found that out accidently long ago. Virtually anyone can multi-vote with almost zero computer knowledge, and it's entirely possible to do so by accident under the right conditions.

I don't even want to say how I stumbled across it on the open forum, because it's so simple that it would probably encourage casual multi-voting from people who might otherwise not think about it.

Those multi-votes surviving the sweeps is another matter.

The comment form does lock out by IP. I've had people mention that in anonymous emails that followed up on an anonymous comment I replied to. It won't let anyone post more than one anonymous comment from the same IP.

I suspect that the reason the comment form locks by IP and the voting form doesn't is because the comments are already loaded when you load the last page of the story. It's not a big deal to collect all the IPs and put them in an array to check against when someone tries to post a comment.

Guessing from what's displayed on the page, I would say that the individual votes aren't loaded by default when someone views the page, which means that data would have to be retrieved in order to check. It was probably an overhead decision.

You're absolutely right about blocking IPs, though. That would only stop the most casual of multi-votes -- all of which are wiped out because they share an IP. That's one of the two only confirmed criteria for the sweeps. All internet polls are inherently flawed because they're so easy to manipulate.

This just happened to me, on my first posted story. So disappointing.

I have been on the Lit. AmPics forum for some time. And I am use to the trolls over there. But they cannot do permanent damage except when they chase away the good people who post. Unfortunately I have witnessed that several times.

Tuesday, my first story was published on the Lit Erotic Couplings category. I was thrilled. Within 24 hours I had over 6,000 hits (which I thought amazing, but I have no frame of reference other than the AmPics and SRP threads). I had 30 ratings with an average of 4.5, which meant it was officially "Hot", even if just barely. I take great pride in this.

Last night the troll in question got on my pic thread and started slamming my story, and slamming me. Within a few minutes, my story rating dropped to 4.28 with 32 ratings posted. This only happens if there were two ratings of a "1" each. I know the troll, and his "other" username must have posted those scores and permanently damaged the score on my story. I have reported the troll, again, and I reported the rating problems, which I know they can verify by using their activity log and compare IP addresses of the ratings to the posts on my thread.

I should not be so vain, but for the story to get back to a 4.5 rating, either the next 23 ratings must all be a '5' (highly unlikely), or of the next forty ratings, 2-of-3 ratings must be a '5' with the third being a '4'. That is also unlikely.

The troll has done permanent damage, and there is no justice in this digital world.

I have 35+ years of IT experience including 10+ years as a UNIX SysOp. I know there are ways to deal with unwanted visitors, either by the SysOp, or by the SysOp giving the appropriate tools to the story and thread owners. Management here at Literotica is either technically incompetent (I do not believe), or the just don't give a damn.

I have spoken many times with the Moderators and they always say the same thing. They just "enforce" The Rules. I will add that they do a very inconsistent job of that. They referred me to the webmaster. I have written the webmaster with my concerns, and possible solutions which I know are technically possible and not really a threat to their beloved "freedom of speech". The webmaster has never responded to me in any manner.

Those are my thoughts. Can anyone prove me wrong?

Where did you write to the Webmaster? If by e-mail, it didn't go anywhere. If you want to reach them, you have to send a PM (upper right corner of this page) to either Laurel or Manu.

Even there, though, I don't think you'll get the action you want. We all live with these trolls and this trolling. I had a nasty personal attack and zap voting on my story that posted today before it even got to the New list or even my own story list (it still isn't listed there). Just lying in wait for me on the category page listing. It's just the way it's going to be when one (or more) of these assholes sinks his/her claws in you. It doesn't do anything to rant about it, either. The troll will absolutely love seeing that he/she has that effect on you.

Well first it is B they don;t give a damn. they have enough readers and archived stories to tell everyone to go fuck themselves if they don;t like it.

As for "unwanted visitors" I am not sure them bombing stories makes them "unwanted" they are still surfing the site which is all that matters to management.

You just have to deal with it, it happens to all of us at some point.

Something to give you some hope though is you mentioned this was your first story. Once you put up a few and gather a fan base their voted will counteract some of the trolling.

Put your story link in your sig and maybe a lot of your ampic friends will check it out and give you some good votes.

I have a question - how do you find stories by specific people on the main story site? I just tried using the search to find both "heatsink" and also using the name "Inspirinious", and I can't find either the story or the author?

How do I go about this? I'd rather like to read these, just so I can vote too.

Duh,

I just noticed; its in his sig "Breakfast in bed" down on the right.

I found Inspirinious by using the member search page. I did not try heatsink but would assume a search would work.

Back to the original thread - sweet_lusciousdesire since there is no good way to get trolls to ignore you then you can only ignore them. Yeah, I know, easier said then done. Are you writing for the readers or for your own gratification? If for yourself then enjoy the fact that you have written a story that people have read. I am aware that very few vote and even less comment but if they are not slamming you then at least the reader found some enjoyment in your work. People, for whatever reason, are more likely to criticize then to praise. I read two of your stories because of this thread. One of your first and one most recent, your style has improved immensely. I did not leave a comment on the older one since I did not want to be critical until I read a recent one by you. Maybe heatsink was offended by poor mechanics in one of your earliest works and can't move on to accept your improvement. Whatever, thanks to you and all the authors for writing.

Thank you for the comments. I suppose that I need to do the following:

a) develop thicker skin, and

b) be less vain about the story ratings.

I will also try to avoid feeding the trolls.

You should be able to find me using the author search. Or the story name search, but there are several "Breakfast in Bed" stories.

And I know nothing about heatsink. My nemesis is named JHat and he is a troll on the AmPics forums. Actually a rather pathetic troll. So bad that other trolls are mocking him. Sort of amusing in a sick way.

The heatsink story doesn't come up. Did it get pulled? It's not in s_ld's specific list or part of the inclusive "my stories" link. (And why list it both ways, she wondered rhetorically.)

Message to my special "today's anonymous" (who I know reads the forum). I left a couple of your digs up, mainly because they are anonymous and the signed ones make them look as pissy as they are, but you might as well stop. Because they're just getting erased henceforth. Get some mental help, man. This obsession of yours is way out there.
