Oh, definitely.

I actually write the name of the room the box will go into in large letters, and then I number the boxes for each room. I keep a notebook where I write down exactly what's where.

When you're ready to go appliance shopping, ask about floor models or the scratched and dented ones. Often the flaw is very minor and the savings can be major.

Oh, and measure the spaces where you want the appliances to go and then take those measurements with you. All refrigerators are not the same size. Check the position of the door handles, too. Most of them can be reversed. If yours needs to be, ask the sales clerk to do this for you.

Just a few thoughts for what they're worth. If you do buy from someone like Sears, you can buy now at your local store and arrange for the delivery from the store near your new home. But I second glynndah's suggestion to measure first. There's nothing worse than trying to put a 25" dishwasher into a 24" hole.

Little pieces of hardware, like shelf supports and screws will get lost if you're not prepared to deal with them. Get some of those little disposable plastic storage containers, such as ziplock and gladlock make. Put one on every piece of furniture you have with small hardware and label the bowls with a permanent marker. On moving day, fill them with anything small that comes off and tape them shut. Stack the containers together in the Open First box. It's a lot easier to unpack the books at the new place if you know where the shelf supports are. It also makes it much easier for the big strong guys to put the bed together.

I always put my books back into the same bookcases when I move, so I give each bookcase a two letter name and then write that name on each box that comes from that bookcase. That way, on move in day all of the book boxes end up next to the correct bookcase. It only took me three or four moves of lugging book boxes after the move to realize why this might be easier.

If you call around to the local realtors, one of them might have a client moving in in the next few weeks. You might be able to arrange to collect that client's boxes and packing material for your own move.

The stove top you're looking for is called ceramic in English. They should be available in larger stores in the US. I saw them at Home Depot, Lowes, and Sears when I helped my mother buy one, so if any of those stores are near your new home, they should be able to order one for you.

Good luck with the move. Just have faith that one day all of the boxes will be unpacked, the pictures will be hung, and your new house will have turned into a home.

We're planning on having a bit of a sale, if I get around to doing it. My mother-in-law and my sister-in-law might help me with that. They're also both planning to help me with the actual moving. MiL is probably going to get on my nerves halfway through, but SiL is a great mediator, and she's also strong enough to help with the heavy stuff (and she does have a pick-up truck... so I won't need to borrow yours, though thanks for the offer ).

Then we've got a friend of my husband's who will probably be the one to drive the moving truck/van/thing we're planning on renting. He's fairly strong too. We're not planning to hire anyone (can't really afford it) but then again the only really heavy things we have are the couches. Fridge stays with the apartment and bed will be disassembled.

I'm actually a bit worried about the first few days after moving as well - I'll need to buy a fridge, stove, washer and dryer. It seems right now like I'll have to live off hot pockets or something for a couple of days, at least.

When Kat and I bought our house, all the appliances came with. However the stove/oven and the fridge were crap. We found a really good deal by purchasing the floor models from a Best Buy. We had checked everywhere we could think of for appliances... but all were out of our price range. On a whim, we stopped at a Best Buy, inquired about what they had.. and the salesperson actually mentioned that we could get the floor/show models for about 2/3 the price of anything else. And because we exceeded $500 (but not by too much), we got free delivery of the new appliances. Yeah, they have a couple of chips in the paint, but not terribly noticeable.

With appliances, I would recommend Whirlpool as they donate appliances for Habitat for Humanity homes. I don't know all the brands they own now, but Whirlpool and Maytag are the largest as far as major appliances. Hopefully that hasn't changed recently, and I didn't see anything on the organizations website to indicate otherwise.

I've got to get an oil change in a few hours, then go and pick up the husband from the airport. He'll help me with some of the packing (mostly his own stuff), then he has to leave again on Monday.

We've still got two weeks until the actual moving.

So it's Saturday now, and we'll be loading the truck next Wednesday night to give us a little more time to clean the apartment and all before leaving on Friday morning. I've been packing and packing and packing, and it seems like the stuff around me just becomes more instead of less, and the boxes are just about filling up the entire second bedroom (where my computer is), there's more in the kitchen and in the living room...

Why does the STUFF not become LESS??

Logically, I know this... but it doesn't curb the impulse to run around screaming and kicking all the boxes in frustration.

And of course, every time I want to do anything else I notice that the stuff I need is already at the bottom of a box somewhere. Blow drying my hair now that it's actually getting cold outside? Not a chance. Look something that's been on my mind up in a book? Out of luck. Dressing up so I can make one last good impression when picking up my letter of recommendation? Yeah, not happening.

I'm quite glad that we decided to get the truck on Wednesday. That way we have all of Thursday to do some emergency intervention if I do fall completely behind and there's still a lot of stuff out by Wednesday night.
