Jedi Outcast i have a computer problem for you!

My wife bought a computer new from office depot it was a display model. It is an HP Pavilion 7955 w/windows XP home ed.

It was completley restored (so they said) when she bought it.

The problem is she cannot get Outlook Express to operate.

I phoned TXU (our ISP) and they cannot help.

Here Is the trouble...when i go to start, control panel, network connections and use the wizzard to add txu to dail up, IE 6.0 fails to put a icon in the network connections box as well as a desktop short cut when i check the little box.

I should have said it can't find any connections to list to start with. note: somethings there because i can use IE6.o to connect to txu and use the internet.

I go to the add/remove window componets and internet explorer box is checked BUT on the right hand side shows that 00.00 Mb are used by this application.

Of coarse when i try to use OE it does not like my password no matter how many times i enter it.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling IE6.0 several times and nothing changes. I tried down loading it from the internet and said i did not have permission to veiw that page!

I'd take the restore disks (they should have given them to you) and boot off of them. ***** BACKUP YOUR DATA ***** That will rebuild the computer factory-fresh. I wouldn't trust what they said about re-building it. If they didn't give you the full set of disks and manuals take it back. Widows XP tries to call home, if you don't have the code numbers on the original manual it will shut itself off after 15 or 30 days.
That's my first thought. the next thought is that you aren't an administrator on the machine, only a user. For any more detail's I'll have to get back to you tomorrow. I run windows 2000 at home, so I have to go to work to get a windows XP machine.

Or if you have absolutely no idea about computers, booting from floppys etc then I would strongly advise you taking it to a small local computer shop. I have one in my village, they sell computers but they are mostly there for upgrading, repairing, buying individual stuff etc. A problem like yours would probably cost something like £5 for a quick look and it's done.

The thing with cool small computer shops is that they'll do what you ask them to and try to help you as much as possible, or mine does anyway. If you buy something like a CD Writer or Graphics card and no idea how to install or use it, take it to them and they'll do it for you. Tell them to format it and they will.

i would recommend using the factory restore disks that came with your computer if that doesnt work you should call HP technical support and they will tell you what the problem is because your machine should still be under warranty so they will eigther repair or replace the machine.it sounds to me like something is wrong with the software if it says the applications are installed but read 00.00 Mb.so if it hasnt been over the time period take it back to where u purchased it and exchange it for a new one if its to late call technical support they should tell u step by step instructions over the phone on how to fix the problem.if all else fails they will send u a box and u ship it to them and they will repair or replace it.

also i wouldnt take it to a shop before calling technical support because they might tell you take it to a shop in your area and they will pay for the costs to repair it.

well!, i screwed up again.

What i should have said.. was they did a complete restore there at the store.

No even HP says that they are no restore disk that comes with that computer.

I have looked at the folders for internet explorer and they are empty. How in hell i can click the IE icon and get on the internet with our username and password is beyond me.

WE tried to down load IE6.0 off the net but it was a no go.

i downloaded the 500k exe file foe IE6.0 off of my compter and we tried that an it gave us a ration about proxy server adresses, which we dont have anyway.

XP sucks.

if they did a full system restore they must have messed something up or possibly the restore disk was scratched and missed a file during the restore or something.
if the computer doesnt have a retore disk its really strange i have purchased compaq and HP pavillion computers before and all of them came with a system restore disk.you said you tried download IE6 off the net where from?microsoft.com?if you downloaded it from there i dont see any reason why it shouldnt work.as for xp sucking maybe home edition might i never used it right now i have xp professional and i think its the best windows version so far.give me your e-mail address and i will try to send you the installation file for IE6.

Ok, Guy's and Gals, one more time there is NO restore disk.

Hewlett packard even says that the computer does not come with a restore disk and that the restore files are preloaded on the hard drive from the factory...yes, that sucks.

Windows XP-home ed will not let us down load IE6.0 from ANYWHERE on the web, microsoft included it says we don't have permission to veiw that page. No doubt that is set at the factory.

I'm guesssing that we are going to be forced to do a complete system restore with the files already on the computer.
If it was truly completely restored just before we bought it (display unit) i don't hold much hope of the damn thing working (about 50/50 i think) right this time but who knows.

If that doesn't work, it being still in warranty HP (after i get through with them) will have to ship me another hard drive with windows xp home ed. already loaded.

Unless someone can come up with something i have not tried.

I'd do the system restore from the hard drive. I've heard of some companies putting the restore disks on a part of the hard drive. It wasn't a very popular idea, if the Hard drive dies you've lost all of your software. The person you talked to at HP might say they don't have the disks, I'd work my way up the food chain there.

If you don't get any results quickly take it back to where you bought it and trade it in for a compaq or an e-machines. Bootable restore CDs are a valuable safety net, you paid for a copy of windows XP and the software installed, they should give you the disks.

jeez, a simple question about e-mail becomes a huge thread about restore disks.

Ok, here is the scoop.

WE..(i'm being nice here) did a non-destrutive restore as opposed to a destructive restore which would have wiped out everything except what was preloaded onto the harddrive before it left hewlett-packard.

IE6.0-works, outlook express-6 works, msn messanger works.

However i cant get Norton systems works 2002 pro to load everything. Or rather it loads it on the computer but won't admit it or let it work.

I did get live update working but with out the anitvirus program running it is not doing much good.

I found out mcafee's loaded on the computer ( xp says it's a non-compatable version and won't let work or even let it's drivers install.) but, i connot find out how to unload it. it is not listed in the add/remove programs and it does not have a uninstall file.

The Xp & HP combo is fine when everything works ok. it is when things screw up is when the hell starts.

I'd stay away fropm norton systemworks it's a real hog. for firewall I'd go with zonealarm. AV either norton standalone or mcafee. For the other disk utils the Stuff that comes with winXP is fine.

before I forget, pick up a copy of ghost 2002 from staples. use that to create a copy of your current hard drive (the way you like it) to CDRW. that way you have your own system restore disks.

I have systems works 2002 pro. and zone alarm pro.

and the special Go back version for HP computers running XP.

I will ghost everything as soon as i get it lined out! for sure!

it sounds to me like ur computer probally had windows ME on it at some time and was upgraded to XP because what you are describing is the same thing that happened to me.i got a compaq pc with windows ME installed on it.it also had mcafee antivirus on it and once i upgraded to XP i got the same problem(saying its non compatable)on mine the actual mcafee software was loaded on the desctop as an icon delete the icon and mcafee is no longer installed on the computer.(it does not appear in add/remove programs because it hasnt been installed yet)as for norton antivirus not working i dont know why i am using norton antivirus 2002 right now have been since i got Xp and it works fine.(personally i think you got cheated with that computer and i would take it back like someone else said trade it for a compaq or e-machines because HP has to many problems thats why i got rid of my HP and went back to compaq)hope this helps somewhat.

Well the good news is it's my wifes computer! She works there so i'm sort of out of the loop with what i think or want.
