JAPANESE soldiers butchered Australian soldiers for food on the Kokoda Track, veterans have claimed.

Sixty years after they fought on the infamous track, Australian veterans say cannibalism was common among enemy troops after their supply lines were cut.
In a Sky TV documentary to be aired today, one digger describes finding the body of an Australian sergeant with his heart and liver missing, and strips of flesh cut from the arms, legs and buttocks.

Disobeying orders not to engage the enemy, he says that the patrol pursued the Japanese and found four of them cooking the human flesh.

The veterans admit that they were incensed by the knowledge that the Japanese had resorted to be eating Australian dead, and in the heat of battle they showed no mercy to their enemies.

In another incident, Australian troops entered a Japanese hospital from where shots had been fired, and although most of the occupants were bandaged and either sick or wounded, all were shot dead.

Former RSL state president Bruce Ruxton confirmed the allegations of cannibalism, but said many people would not want to believe the Japanese had eaten the flesh of Australian soldiers.

"There was cannibalism. That's a fact of life," Mr Ruxton said.

"There were men out of my battalion who were found with their buttocks cut off. My battalion was there, I wasn't."

Mr Ruxton, who was a rifleman in Borneo with the 2/25 Infantry Battalion during World War II and then served with the occupation forces in Japan, said the Japanese committed some terrible sins during World War II.

"People just don't understand. They (the Japanese) weren't animals. That is too good a name for them. They were monsters. Nothing shocks me about them."

The revelations come only days after Prime Minister John Howard and Papua New Guinea leader Sir Michael Somare unveiled a memorial dedicated to the Kokoda Track Diggers and their PNG allies.

The memorial, unveiled on Wednesday, is high in PNG's mountainous jungle at Isurava, where 1000 Diggers made a stand against 4000 Japanese.

But Australian War Memorial historian Dr Peter Stanley said yesterday that he believed cannibalism of soldiers had to be seen in perspective.

"It's been known since 1942. It was documented in an inquiry which was reported late in the war, I think in 1944," Dr Stanley said. "It's been documented in every book on Kokoda since 1942.

"Two thousand Australians died in the Papuan campaign. In 1942, if people had come back saying Japanese are eating the dead, 2000 Australian families would have been devastated.

"No Australian was killed in order to be eaten. The Japanese ate Australians who were already dead. That's what William Webb (the jurist who investigated Japanese atrocities) found."

Dr Stanley said it was important to keep reports of cannibalism on Kokoda in proportion, given that such a large number of families lost loved ones.

"It's important not to allow them to imagine their relatives were eaten," he said.

The ANZAC Legacy -- the Kokoda Track, presented by John Gatfield and produced by Lisa Whitby, screens at 12.30pm and 11.30pm today on Sky News Australia.

No, Awesome, mate, you haven't . . . so tasty . . . so willing . . . so exciting . . . so orgasmic . . . so reactive . . . and we get it every day!! :D :p :D

May God bless the families of Aussie diggers who didn't return from the Kokoda trail.

And another blessing, this time for the local inhabitants, affectionately known as the 'Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels', who risked their lives to help our men.

God Bless Australia, and keep it free and safe.

Doesn't surprise me any either because my Grandpa told me alot of things that the Japanesse did to their captive soldiers. Foremost of the things he told me was sticking dynamite up the asses of some of their prisoners, lighting it and having them run away...Kaboom. So it isn't much of a leap of imagination to seeing them eat some of those they killed.

Japanese troops were well known for their cruely during the war. There are still many Australians who harbour hatred and anger against the Japanese.

Don't forget the women they captured and used as 'comfort women' too.

The war had many hero's.. not all of them were enlisted personnel.

Hi Lost Cause,

the Kokoda Campaign was the first time in WWII that the Japanese were stopped, by part-time soldiers, and a fighting withdrawal delayed the Jap advance for six weeks. This action ranks with Thermophylae as a defensive action.

Oz military historians have never explained why Kokoda was always spoken of in hushed tones by the men who fought there. The reason had to do with the changing allegiances of Oz, moving from Britain, who had lost Singapore by incompetence, to the US with the aircraft carriers.

There is a lot of personalities tied up in this reticence also. General Blamey wanted a place at the surrender, and so he had Oz troops fight back over the Track - at enormous and unnecessary cost of Aussie lives. He was a stupid bastard, better known for leaving his wallet in a brothel when his police force conducted an unscheduled raid.

There are few books on the Kokoda Campaign, but two unofficial histories are

Glassop, L The Rats in New Guinea, the sequel to
Glassop, L We Were the Rats (about the successful defence of Trobruk)
Paul, R Retreat from Kokoda, the Australian Campaign in New Guinea 1942, Heinemann Australia.

From Paull p273

Cannibalism was first discovered at Templeton's Crossing on 15 October by the 2/25th patrol. Two Aussie bodies were armless with large pieces of flesh cut from the legs and thighs.

It was found at the Gona-Buna beachhead and later in 1945 on both Aussie dead and their own living Japanese troops.

A captured diary from Fumitoshi Yasuoka of No 1 Machine Gun Company, Tsukamoto Battalion, contained an entry (18 October - "No provisions. Some people are said to be eating the flesh of Tori. It is said to have a good flavour." "Tori" was slang for "Toriko" or "a captive."

Lt Sakamoto's diary (19 October) has a (translated) entry "Because of food shortage, some companies have been eating the flesh of Aussie soldiers. The taste is said to be good."

The remnants of the Okamoto Company of the Murase Battalion (No 12 Company, 3rd Battalion, 41st Regiment) defended their beach perimeter as they fought to the death without rations and so were again reduced to cannibalism.

For a detailed account of the atrocities performed by the Japanese during WWII see "Knights of Bushido" by Lord Liverpool.

No, Awesome, I didn't realise that you were a hot Aussie chick. How about you indicate that ever so slightly in your profile.

Don :)

The Chinese just didn't seem to last...

30 minutes later and you want something more substantial!

Sorry Don, but listening to the exploits of the Aussies in WWII is about like listening to the retelling of the calvalry battles in Kansas and Missouri during the American civil war...

Entertaining, stories of bravery, and things that should never be forgotten, but there was a REAL war going on elsewhere!

Starving men in a violent conflict ate the flesh of other men. Wow. 50+ years ago? Wow.

And you expect people to not buy the products of the "Japs" because of it?

If that's the case, maybe I will take up slapping White people as a sport.

Strange fruit indeed.

Hi SIN, You have a valid point in the context of Macarthur's Island Hopping Strategy . . . they were of less importance to the final outcome than Midway and Okinawa . . . that is why Blamey was such a fool!!

...and maybe why he was far away from REAL action. LOL.

Very possibly, SIN. But more likely the reason was that Macarthur was a real media freak and would not tolerate any body who could detract from his engineered multi-media record of his historic campaign beating the Japs. Regardless, Macarthur won - fortunately for all of us.

Two biggest mistakes in American History...

Not letting Patton go for the Russians.

Not letting MacAuthur go for the Chinese.

Look what we have today...

Add a 3rd mistake at the beginning... Not letting Patton get to Berlin first and basically holding Patton on a pretty tight leash for most of the war.

Exactly my thoughts.

Lost Cause, the facts you stated have not been kept a secret and yes people knew about it (maybe not public knowledge, but the information was there if you looked).

Bruce Ruxton is a complete and total idiot, not forgetting his racist and sexist remarks, he is never a good one to listen to.

Quoting him as an "authority", is like believing Dan Quayle when he said he invented the internet.

Kokoda was the first victory against the Japanese on land during the second world war.

Yes it was an amazing thing the diggers did and yes I would happily thank each and every Australian and New Zealand combatant given the chance... but at the same time, it did happen 50 years ago, and the rest of the world has moved on.

Today, the JAPANESE nation, is an important and respected part of the world community.

We must learn from history and remember it, not continue to harbour the emotions and fester them.

I have no problem eating human meat under sterving war condition. It tastes like pork, so should be good with apple or cranberry sauce.

Jews and Muslims should try to find out what pork taste like. You don't know what you are missing until you've tried it!

Given the choice of starving to death or eating human flesh it's not just the Japanese who'll resort to the latter. Everyone will have heard of the south american rugby team that crashed in the Andes, later made into the film "Alive". Then there's the less well known case of a crew from a whaling ship that were adrift for weeks in lifeboats, they drew lots and cut the losers leg off and ate it.
