James Brown is Dead

Rest in Peace, James...

He left behind some of the greatest music ever...

Should be cranking up Sex Machine right about now :)

It knocked me down when I found out the godfather of soul had passed...Man Ive loved his music since I was a kid. I learned how to dance, from his moves. Hell be missed down here.. RIP Mr Brown, thanks for the 30+ years of funken-groovin youve given me.

Granted, his music was great for the time, but let's not forget his gun running and domestic violence days.

Ah, but he then used those experiences to work with youth and spread the message it was really not a good option or necessary. He didn't have a great start in life and certainly was not in a country where he could expect help in any way, so I guess his criminal behaviour was one way he found to survive when nothing else seemed possible...and through surviving, he was able to share his talent with the world for many decades and make a lot of people happy.

So, if I promise to tell kids it's not good to break the law, it's okay to do illegal things? Is that what you're saying?

I'm not trying to take away anything from his musical career. (He did that himself.) I just think it's odd the way "we" pick and choose who to praise and who to criticze.

The praise was for his musical abilities and not necessarily for his model behavior as a human being. He was well regarded for his talents and his ability to reach people through his music. No one discounts his violent, drug using ways. However, recounting them now that he's dead doesn't change what he's accomplished in his music.

If we ignored his musical talent because he was less than stellar as a person, get ready to write off about 90% of the artists and musicians for the last few decades. Heck, Bing Crosby was an alcoholic and a womanizer. Elvis Presley did all sorts of drugs, married underage girls and carried a gun, but he's .... THE KING.

i guess all i really meant to say is that i always loved JB's music simply because his voice and his moves were infectious. i didn't care for his criminal side, but then again, i didn't see anyone praise him as a saint either. *shrugs*
