There were hamburgers and hot dogs. Fizzy drinks and beer. There was a full moon that was red to begin with but turned yellow the higher it rose. It was bitterly cold but thankfully no wind to make it feel colder. Disco music blared loud and raucous and small adults in the making danced with sophistication beyond their years. Groups of parents huddled together deep in conversation, shouting to make themselves heard. There were samosas and curry (rice being optional) and there were stalls with clothes and stalls with books and stalls with cakes all for sale. There was a Grand Prize Draw and a Lottery Game with £20 for the winner. There was a floor show with students from 4a showing how well they could turn a neat ankle to "The Moment She Walks Through The Door" and "If They Could See Me Now". There was noise, laughter, boisterousness and tears. And then there were the fireworks...
Thunderclaps, Starbursts, Dive Bombers and Rocket Sprays. Catherine Wheels, Roman Candles and Volcanos. Rockets that burst into a hundred different coloured lights and rockets that just shot up until they spent their energy and fell back to earth. There were pretty ones and there were loud ones.
And when it was all over I handed the children back to their parents, arrived home an hour ago and wrote this.
Now I know that Christmas is just around the corner.
