It's Your Turn To Ban A Book!

I say ban the Similarillion. It's like trying to read a King James version of the Bible.

Agreed. It's amazing that the Hobbit can be so good, and the other so bad.

Leave the Silmarilion alone. That was a lot of hard work, and he probably had a good reason.

If anything Tolkien is to be banned, the son has exploited his father's name with shameless glee, publishing at least a dozen thick volumes of the author's private notes, rejected ideas, and first drafts marked up with everything from corrections to dental appointments. What an ass. Anyone who's ever agonized over rewriting a paragraph knows how unlikely it is that a writer would feel honored by having his rough drafts and story ideas published. He might as well honor his father's memory by selling his underwear on ebay. Note to Tolkien's slacker son: write your own book. At least your father's ideas were his own.

Hmmm. Tough call. On the one hand, yes - it does look rather exploitative. On the other hand, scholars often find such materials absolutely invaluable. Might one place upon his actions the generous interpretation that he hopes for his father to be taken seriously and is providing the materials necessary for scholarly examination and analysis? I, for one, am extremely grateful for the welter of letters, diaries, journals, drafts, notes and revisions in my chosen field of endeavour. There's nothing quite like find one's hunches amazingly confirmed in the revisions of a draft.
